Hope pups are well

No the Irish is a native Irish breed and the standard depends on the Irish Kennel Club; But in the UK there is a UK standard; bit complicated in a way,

I am looking at the KC registrations numbers for 2013 as printed in Dog World Feb 14, 2014.

Irish Setter (red to avoid confusion) 859

English Setter 326

Gordon Setter 273

Irish Red and White Setter 82

So the Irish are not at risk!

Frances,

as Northern Ireland is in the UK and has breeders of Irish setters, I suppose the Irish Setter is considered a native Breed in the UK! :-)

Just to clarify: These are not my own words. I copied the above passage straight from the Crufts website and included the link so you can read the article. I assumed the writer had made a mistake and was indeed referring to either the IRWS or ES but wanted to check whether anyone knows anything I don't.

I think that some of this could be down to people allowing there dogs to have litters older than the advisable age, so the kennel club will not register them. Why I say this is on facebook this week an Irish had a litter at 8 ( only 2 pups) and a comment from someone else said their dog had a litter at 9. I have always believed that between 2 and 5 is ideal, but that is another topic.
