Hahaha. Obviously she has had her head buried in quick sand with regards to ready-made meals. LOL LOL LOL Or maybe she is partial to a bit of horse meat here and there. If you shop in Tesco's you are bound to bump into her in the horse meat section. What a complete and utter dick head !

Well done Finn I think you were winning from the first hurdle. Trish you talk so much sense, I have recently found out that Abbie was put on 4 - 5 times the dose of medication that the AHT would recommend, two days before she had a major stroke, shame I did not read more at that time and trusted in my X vets.

Hi Andy, sorry for the late reply. No, I am not feeding raw now. It is not my choice but the dogs choice. They where used to eat dry food, I tried to feed them raw but they didn't like it. Now I am feeding the best dry food and give them some raw things and homemade snacks.

Most of the dietary information vets receive at Uni is provided by, and paid for by, dog food manufacturers. I suspect she also recommended you a food that was available for purchase in your reception!

I was pleasantly surprised when Bess had her annual vac that the (young) vet did not give me a lecture, but said any type of food needs to be balanced, and that as I seemed to understand how to balance a raw diet, and because Bess looked great she had no concerns. And I was ready to go in all…

And I was ready to go in all guns blazing.
Mind you, they're not all good - at the puppy party they said large breeds should be fed from raised bowls.
As intelligent dog owners I think we need to be ready to challenge our vets. It's all too easy to put faith in them, but it never hurts to challenge them as many don't keep up with new knowledge. Sometimes we forget that we can read too. I bet she was a young vet....…tag:irishsetters.ning.com,2013-04-18:865021:Comment:10948332013-04-18T20:06:26.038ZCatherine Carterhttp://irishsetters.ning.com/profile/CatherineCarter

Hi Astrid. I did notice the date of your post. Do you raw feed now?

I have owned Irish setters for over thirty years and I feel the raw diet is the best I can offer my dogs. After doing lots of research I fail to see how people can still feed some of the commercial foods knowing what the ingredients are.

I had my dogs raw diets checked out by the nutritionist at Queens vet school, Cambridge, who said I couldn't be feeding them anything better. Some vets are becoming more aware, so why do all the vet students at Queens walk around wearing Hills Science Diet shirts???? clever marketing by multi-national corporations who are the wizards of marketing and spin, and who also offer the crock of gold to places who feel they are strapped for much needed funds....... sighs, and yet people are quick…

Hi Andy, I agree with you. Check the date of my previous post. I did have some doubts about the BARF diet, but that was 3 years ago. ;-)
