Hi, my english setter Haidy has beautifull but very thick coat. It is makeing me insane sometimes, because its very dificcult to take care of her coat. She has like tripple undercoat and its hard to keep it in healthy way. Her coat need some extra care. Im using brush, then shedding comb and sometimes its necessary to use thinning scissors. I never saw english setter with this thick kind of coat. Have you got som experience with this kind of coat? :) Thanks for reply.....Lenka

I know not everyone trims their English Setters, but I have noticed that different countries do seem to present their dogs with a different show trim to that of UK exhibitors/owners.

I have an ES calender here in the office and I can usually tell immediately whether the dog is UK based, by the trim.

I've attached a photo here of Henry, as you can see, we clipper the ears and trim around them, we clipper the front of the neck, down to the breast bone, and then we trim around the feet and hocks, and tidy up around their botties. Some people will use thinning scissors on the ears and throat, others will use virtually no guard on clippers so that you can almost see the skin. I prefer to use the clippers but lightly so that the trim looks almost natural...here's my baby boy :-)

I have noticed that some countries will leave the ears long and curly but seem to trim all the way down the back, a bit like the American Cocker Spaniel, and in some cases, the dog presented can look like a totally different breed to that being shown over here.

I just wondered, and this includes pets that aren't shown, whether you trim, what style you trim in, and whether you have a preference.

I personally like the way we trim over her, but think I would like to see the ears left like spaniels ears, they are so cute :-)
Are your English Setters scared of cats?tag:irishsetters.ning.com,2011-01-07:865021:Topic:4406322011-01-07T15:26:48.191ZSheree Parrishhttp://irishsetters.ning.com/profile/ShereeParrish

I thought my old lad was a one off, whenever we went out for walks and he saw a cat he would stop dead in his tracks, terrified to move. I either had to drag him across the road so we could carry on our walk, or turn around and go back in the direction we had just come in. If we did the latter then he would walk with his tail between his legs, his eyes wide and scared, and keep looking behind him incase the innocent cat was coming after him!

I didn't have Henry as a pup, we bought him at 13 months so have had him just 6 months now, whenever we have seen cats he has also stopped dead but then pulled on his lead so I thought he wanted to make friends. The cats in question so far have run off the moment they caught sight of us lunging towards them. I'm assuming, like my previous dogs, he had also never had anything to do with his cats for the first year at his breeders.

Last night I had Henry at the vets, he had made friends with a little girl and her dad and was all waggy tailed and kissy kissy, suddenly the vet nurse came out of the door with a cat in a basket, Henry took one look at the cat and jumped into the air and straight into my arms...all 30kg of him...he was a quivering wreck, bless him.

At that moment we got called in by the vet and I tried to put him back down but he just clung on, so I had to stagger into the room with him in my arms...much to the amusement of everyone.

I am now wondering if I have just raised another wussy dog or if this fear is quite common in dogs that haven't had the opportunity to mix with cats.
Do you have a favourite colour in the English Setter?tag:irishsetters.ning.com,2011-01-05:865021:Topic:4394972011-01-05T18:08:52.049ZSheree Parrishhttp://irishsetters.ning.com/profile/ShereeParrish

I often wondered if other people have favourite colours. Strangely enough, my least favourite colour is orange belton, and I have had more orange than anything, my absolute favourite is dark blue belton and tan, as can be seen on the attached photo of my darling boy Fabian:

Fabian went to live with a friend, together with my pointer when illness meant me having to rehome my dogs, he was from the first litter sired by my darling Leon so was a very special boy too. I still get to see him and would love one just like him in the future.

My husband thought he preferred the blues and, when we lost Leon, we were teasing each other about which colour we were going to get and we ended up with another orange, (Henry, who we wouldn't swap for the world :) ), and he now prefers oranges out of any of the colours.

So, I just wondered, do you have a fave colour or do you just take whatever life throws at you. I realise for show purposes we are looking at construction etc first, but what if two pups are of equal merit but different colours..which would you choose?
Renal Failuretag:irishsetters.ning.com,2010-10-27:865021:Topic:4073662010-10-27T04:04:08.466ZSheree Parrishhttp://irishsetters.ning.com/profile/ShereeParrish

Help!! My old boy Blue ,almost 10, has just been diognoised with renal failure and I am told that there is little I can do but watch him lose yet more weight until I decide he can go on no longer!! In himself he is great, still active, eating and wanting walks, all but abit shorter now. I can feel every bone in his body and would love to hear from anyone who has had this and found anyway of making the last months more comfortable. Any help would be great, thanks.

So I discovered the other day that my rather small English is actually below standard... standing at just under 64cm when the standard is 65cm...my other English male stands dead on 65cm.

I have been told by a couple of people i know that the UK English Setters are quite small... is this true? Are they below standard and if they are, is there a reason behind why no one seems to be breeding them to standard? I know that size is a small aspect when breeding but i am…

So... what is your ES height? I am curious to find out a bit of an average across the board...

If anyone out there owns both, what do you find are the major differences between the two? I own only English Setters, however my friend has Irish and we have noted many differences... in particular, that the English is more laid back than the Irish, and that the Irish can be more aloof, and less cuddly...
Does anyone agree?
