Sonny's Story

Sonny was a rescue that I found on petfinder through Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue group. This was his Profile Sonny is a healthy boy who is current on vaccines, heartworm negative and on monthly heart worm preventative. He is about 48 lb and is neutered. He is an absolutely to die for gorgeous boy and really wants to trust people, but he has some huge doubts about humans. We don’t know what happened in his past but he is definitely skittish and does better with women than men. He refuses to come out of his crate for men. While he is so very skittish, you can see the look in his eyes that he wants to trust. He also doesn’t have a mean bone in his body with regards to people. He does not like his foster fur siblings crowding him out or trying to get in the crate with him. He gives out a HUGE bark and that usually works in clearing his space of his fur siblings. Sonny is still working on his potty training (a result of his skittishness in new things and going outside) and his leash walking (he pulls like a mule and is all over the place!). His foster mom knows he will get better at these things as his comfort level increases along with his self confidence and world experience. Sonny would probably do best in a female only home. If there is a male presence in his forever home the male shouldn’t anticipate a lot of interaction with Sonny for quite some time. He will warm up, but only with time and patience. Sonny would do better without children in his new home, unless they are teens or young adults on the calmer side. He would prefer a calm and peaceful home environment with a fenced yard. His foster mom doesn’t think he’d do too well with cats. He’d probably be ok with another dog as long as it is a dog who will give him his space and not force play upon him. Sonny is a gem for the right forever home who wants to work with him to become a wonderful companion. He needs to learn to trust and become brave again. His poor braveheart got lost along his journey somewhere; it is simply waiting to be found again.
Inspite of the fact that I have cats and a husband and son living with me, I had to try to see if they would let me be Sonny's forever home. I saw something in his eyes in his profile photos that spoke to me so strongly that I could not stop thinking about him. I have never owned an English Setter before, or a dog this size for that matter. I have always had small dogs.... (yorkie, lhaso apso) but I knew we were meant to cross paths somehow.
