Hi Caroline, I can understand that you do not want to rush in in finding a good kennel or a suitable sitter for Pepper, but instead of missing your break alltogether - why not take Pepper with anyway? We have a foldable 'den' and are welcome at frie…

I have had my dogs in different kennels and they have been fine, I think its just a question of looking around for one that you feel is OK. As for bad things happening in boarding kennels, well it would hardly be in the kennelowners best interest to…

I always feel that a good boarding kennel is by far the best solution. And I for one do not believe all the horror-stories of dogs ruined in kennels. Mine are as happy going as they are when I pick them up again.

I, like Michelle, advocate exercising my boy's mind as much as I exercise his body - more so in fact. It would be like us going on a marathon and then sitting in our armchair the whole time afterwards without doing anything at all. Very boring. Sinc…

Mental exercise is far more important than going for walks. My guys can be as lazy as they wish or as active & i am happy to have that option if anything should happen, they dont demand exercise. We do live on an acre so they will happily self exer…

I have always had set exercise routines with my Irish, which involves free running exercise totalling approx 2 hours daily. I have found this keeps my dogs happy and healthy. Now that I work at home, my dogs have their first walk/run when we get up…

Hi, Just read Jennifer Martin's reply on Pepper's pulling on the lead. My experience: Yes, stopping and turning into a lamppost as soon as they pull is hard work (took us about six months). It may take longer that other methods (never tried andy ot…

Hi Caroline, Just read your email and there is one thing that I find useful when our Setters are too exhuberant for our arms and that is to turn your rope slip lead into a figure 8. One loop of the figure 8 goes over the dog's neck as usual but the…

The thing with extremely long walks you touched in this discussion my well be true - at least I can speak for humans :)). I find that Gina is the happiest dog after our 1 1/2 hours morning walk and run on the beach. But we always interrupt and do s…

With my training of Rio, I am following the method, that the moment he starts to pull on the lead, I stop and call him back to me, he turns releasing the pressure off the lead, I praise him and then and only then walk on again on a loose lead, in th…

Hello Caroline and welcome here. Seems we've done it the other way round - I'm Swiss and I live in Scotland ;-)
Good luck with your pulling boy. Mine still pulls (after three years - but don't tell anyone!). I'm sure you will get there, it just takes time and a lot of patience.
Best regards from Scotland,
Nicole

A setter that pulls??? Nooo, never heard of that problem...;-))

No seriously, the first years can be hard work and you really need to know what you are doing. I suggest you find a good training school - if you tell me where you are I may be able to give you contacts. Have you been in touch with the swiss setter & pointer club? They run training courses too.
