<p>At eight weeks, she came to us and already made herself at home; at nine weeks, her legs were finally long enough to get on that chair, our Joy loved so much:</p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/10837641255?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/10837641255?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Her grandfather on the mother's side is from the hunting line and so, we have a small Speedy Gonzales with us and are already working on a good recall:<a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/10837641298?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/10837641298?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>She is extremely fast:<a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/10837641100?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/10837641100?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a>But so is our camera:<a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/10837641874?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a></p>

<p>She's also very beautiful, here at ten weeks:</p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/10837643664?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/10837643664?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>And she is very soft and can be calm:</p>

<p><span>Sadly, we had to say goodbye to our beloved Joy yesterday - we are devastated! Her diarrhea came back and we cared and cooked for her and once more and she started eating again and was doing fine. We went on our old rounds and were all happy, but then she was restless last Sunday night and did not want to eat anymore the next day after a morning snack. I thought I would give her a day of rest and cared for her once more through the next night but she became weaker by the moment. Her heart was still fine but the medication and the diureticum to keep her lungs free, together with probably a severe enteritis was too much and her system broke down. She would have had to go on a drip at the clinic with not much hope and so at least, she was allowed to go to sleep on her bed in our old VW bus, where she spent so many nights on all our travels together. RIP my love! Until we meet again... <p>Defying the odds, our lovely bundle of fur called Joy is still with us! She is in need of much care now and since a few weeks, she's getting a bit slow and weaker on her hind legs. We were however given a lovely summer with many short walks in the Alps and whenever she got tired, she could ride in a dog trailer. She is always thirsty due to the medication and loves a good splash in a fresh mountain brook. </p>

<p></p>
<p>We also enjoyed the spring meadows in the mountains - years ago, we were up on that mountain in the background, but that was before, we had Joy - the area here however is always gorgeous:</p>

<p></p>
<p>I'm ever so glad, we fought for her life back in January this year and that she was given another chance! To care for her is quite an effort, however she is more than worth it with all the Joy she brought to our lives and look, what we would have missed all through the year without her in it! Of course, I hope the first photo is not the last, but we also know that every day is a gift now.</p>
<p>Bless you all! Cornelia and Joy xxx</p>

<p></p>
<p>Happy 13th Birthday, darling Joy!! You made it!!! When you collapsed onto our living room floor just before New Year, we thought, that was it... we rushed you to the clinic at half past ten that night and fought for your life. The diagnosis was devastating: Severe heart deficiency, arrhythmia, partial fibrillation and and - plus lung edema, caused by the heart, that was not beating properly any more! </p>
<p></p>
<p>The summer before, you had the usual signs of old age: Some problems with the legs or not being able to cope in hot weather; so we bought you a cool coat and you were happy as ever. Uphill became more difficult but after a short break, you did not show any signs of slowing down. Little did we expect that your heart was probably already severely ill.</p>
<p></p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/8831357269?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/8831357269?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p></p>
<p>You enjoyed the autumn of your years together with us and were still on tour with our new camper van, always happy, always active and always keen to explore new areas. </p>
<p></p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/8831334672?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/8831334672?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p></p>
<p>After your collapse, the vets saw no chance and wanted to put you to sleep - but the cardiologist tried one last treatment with a different medication to dehydrate the lungs and one hour later, your lungs were clearer and with the beginning of this treatment and your enormous will to live, we went, on what we thought were our last walks, enjoying a bit of snow.</p>
<p></p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/8831361263?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/8831361263?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p></p>
<p>Day after day, you became stronger and managed longer walks. You started to eat properly again and gained weight and strength. You defied the odds and jumped back to your old self, pulling on the leash like always. The vets shake their heads and wonder how you made it, because even with the new treatment, they did not think, you'd live that long.</p>
<p></p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/8831372878?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/8831372878?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p></p>
<p>The first photo on top is from today: Joy had a nice walk of nearly 4 km, was twice in the river and does not look ill or tired but happy and content! Every day is a gift now, a bonus, so to speak - I doubt, you will enjoy another B'Day. So we will celebrate your Birthday for the rest of your life and are thankful for the Joy with which you enriched ours!!!</p>Happy 12th Birthday Joy!!!tag:irishsetters.ning.com,2020-04-25:865021:BlogPost:12341402020-04-25T18:00:00.000ZCorneliahttp://irishsetters.ning.com/profile/Cornelia

<p>She is also still with us on all our expeditions. <p>I had an adventurous life and travelled a lot and hope to be able to explore the world still a few years longer. But first things first: Last year in early spring we went to a town near Neapel, that was destroyed by a volcano. We explored the old streets of Pompeii:</p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156572520?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156572520?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>That was fun! Here's a pillar of an old church:</p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156596617?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156596617?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>We then went on to Sicily - but I cannot recommend this - there are so many stray dogs there, that are quite aggressive and even on this picture, I can not just up and go because of all the broken glass near the path. Otherwise it would be ever so lovely here:</p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156651093?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156651093?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>I'm too old to run from other dogs or put up a fight! This next portrait of me is not 100% sharp but she says, I do so much look like mum:</p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156736279?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156736279?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>When we go on hikes, I now need more time to rest, so we have a break every hour:</p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156758629?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156758629?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>I still love to go on extended hikes:</p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156774022?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156774022?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>And see: We made it to the top:</p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156789841?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156789841?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a> Summer, we spent again in Scotland, where the temperatures are not as high as back home:</p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156822254?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156822254?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>And in autumn, we again explored the mountains at home - we could not go too far though as I tore the sole of my paw open - once again!!:</p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156857165?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156857165?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>This was last autumn and the trees were golden as are my autumn years:</p>
<p><a href="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156903017?profile=original" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2156903017?profile=RESIZE_710x" class="align-full"/></a>Winter was a bit dull but then spring came and I'm again en'Joy'ing lovely walks and tours:</p>

<p>That was last summer in Scotland - for the readers of Gavin Maxwell's book 'Ring of Bright Waters' Camusfearna should be well known and apparently there are still otters there! - although the one above looks more like a sea monster!</p>
<p>But let me start from the beginning: In late spring we went to visit our friends Barbara and Tiny in Vienna:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974399068?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974399068?profile=original" width="600" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>And because none of us likes hot summers, we went right up to the northern coast of Scotland for the summer holidays:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974399075?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974399075?profile=original" width="600" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>We still tour with our small VW California camper and Joy has a special place there on the 'sofa':</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974402530?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974402530?profile=original" width="413" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>In autumn, we went to the Engadin, Switzerland, right on the border to Italy and enjoyed a very special autumn with the trees in lovely colours:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974404413?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974404413?profile=original" width="600" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>We went on to the Dolomites, Italy, for extended walks:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974405818?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974405818?profile=original" width="600" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>And last but not least a photo of our lovely girl, taken last spring, resting in her raincoat, while we were taking photos of wild orchids - the yellow spots in the background are actually lady slippers! </p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974407664?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974407664?profile=original" width="600" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>This year, we have already been to Sicily in Feb and to Sardinia over Easter, but I have to dash to work and if I do not put up that blog now, it will probably be another year... so Happy Birthday, lovely girl; a special treat is waiting for you tonight:-)).</p>Happy 9th Birthday, Joy!!!tag:irishsetters.ning.com,2017-04-24:865021:BlogPost:11747252017-04-24T07:00:00.000ZCorneliahttp://irishsetters.ning.com/profile/Cornelia

Joy is a very travel experienced 'Red Bundle of Fur' - for those, who do not yet know her: Her kennel name is 'Coppersheen Delightful Bundle of Joy', but you can call her Joy :-)). I made a map last year with all the countries, she visited so far, but did not manage to blog and so I will probably have to redo the map. Here's the old one before I don't upload any of the two:</p>
<p></p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974396709?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974396709?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p></p>
<p>Switzerland - the red dot in the middle - that's where we live. Bluish/violet are countries, we toured extensively and/or several times and spent many nights there - you will have to add Sweden and Finnland to that now. Green are the countries, we only crossed the border to go hiking. And Poland we did not really visit, but passed through and spent one night there each way on our route to the Baltic States last year. This was our travel route this time:</p>
<p></p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974398367?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974398367?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p></p>
<p>We went up via Denmark, Sweden and Finnland and in Finnland you can see the route going to the right and a bit to the south again - that's where we visited our dear former ES friend Jarno, his family and of course the lovely Nemo. It was a 4,5 day drive to his place but well worth it!! Up in the North, we went birding for three weeks (with the camera, not the rifle!!) and then we went back home via Norway. This ptarmigan was sitting portrait for me on the Polar Circle:</p>
<p></p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974400240?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974400240?profile=original" width="600" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p></p>
<p>With a quiet Setter by my side or not far behind, I could approach the bird as close as 7-8 meters for this frame filling shot. The little ones were even closer, sitting motionless on a rock, while the rough legged buzzard was flying above in circles. I was probably more security than threat and I think the animal knows, that I don't shoot to kill!</p>
<p></p>
<p>And here's the quiet Lady, who sometimes finds the photo subjects for me (a pic taken by the other photographer), en'Joy'ing the evening sun (that never goes down btw.) up on the penninsula leading to the Northern Cape in front of our trusted small VW California Camper:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974402256?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974402256?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>

<p>Joy's health was a bit of a rollercoaster lately. Two month ago, she was in the clinic on a drip because of acute enteritis, but was recovering very quickly and we went to Italy again for the holidays. On coming home, she came into season and at the end of the three weeks, two days ago now, was bitten by another dog on her neck. When the pain killer did not do it's job yesterday eve and her back legs were trembling even when laying down, I checked her out and after discovering puss at her rear end, l rushed her back to the clinic with suspicion of pyometra. I was already reading about it on the internet, because she was in pain this time during her season and was therefore carefully watching her. It was all inflamed and full of puss and so she's spayed now. They made a drainage at her neck because of the dog bite and also removed sort of a talcum gland near her left eye. So she's quite stitched together now, but all went well and she's relaxed, hungry and already looking for cats again, when outside. The photo above was taken 24 hours after the op. I think she looks a bit sad, because her looks will go, but the blue-ish body from the vet suits her well and I made a stretchable neck towel for her, because the bandage on her neck does not keep very well. So speedy recovery my love and may you soon come with on tour again!</p>

<p>The above series with Joy looking down on a small nature reserve was taken this morning with a small Fuji camera, while it still snowed. The photo on the left is without correction, the middle one on + 1 and the one on the right on + 2. The background on the photo on the right is already a bit too washed out for my taste, so something like + 1.7 would have been nice, but the setter is red, the moss on the tree green and the snow in the foreground white and with detail.</p>

<p>In December, we had wonderful snow - so Joy and I went out to have some fun and I brought the camera with. It all started with a harmless walk through the forest and Joy's long gazes into a small nature reserve, where often deer graze and herons fish in a small pond:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974369787?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974369787?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>I took photos also of this little hut, a favourite photo motive of ours throughout the year:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974369903?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974369903?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>But Joy wanted to have a good run on 'her' field and so while looking through the camera, she ran off and I felt this enormous pull on my wrist, when she reached the end of the 12 meter long line. I kept my stand and managed to hinder that the quite new camera fell into the snow and thought the pain on my wrist came only from the line. Only on Monday morning, when I could not find my watch, did I realize that the metal strap must have torn then and the watch fallen into the quite deep snow. But I'm used to my rascal, so I first made my photo and then we went to the field. Bye, bye Joyful:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974371719?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974371719?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>That morning, I also took some special food with and trained the 'emergency recall'; I thought of taking some photos of her, when she comes running back in a straight line. The first photo was taken like this and the following also - hello again:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974373932?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974373932?profile=original" width="723" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>This bench is a bit cold to sit down but who needs rest anyway - at least not Joy:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974374281?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974374281?profile=original" width="696" class="align-full"/></a>Fot those who now wondered what happened to my watch: I went looking for it several times and the place must have looked as if the wild boars have gone through after a while! A fortnight later, when the snow melted, I thought of going back again - and there it was! It 'survived' snow, rain and minus temperatures and did not loose a second! It just 'counted' the hours until I came back looking for it. With this little story, I want to wish you best of luck and a Happy New Year! Or maybe better: A Joyful New Year!</p>

<p>Hello again! Let's continue our adventure through Norway! <p>Hello again! Let's continue our adventure through Norway! You might remember from my last blog, that our 'ingredients' of this trip was: A bad weather forecast, an active and full of energy Setter (me) and two keen photographers. Luckily all of us share one great hobby: Ornithology! So we went to look for birds - the one above is one kind of birds he likes very much but like the one below, it smelled really strange:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974366924?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974366924?profile=original" width="609" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>This smells great!!! But no birds here; she said it's not for birds but for crabs:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974366992?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974366992?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Ah yes, I remember - but why is this 'shop' moving...?</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974367128?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974367128?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>This creature here does neither smell nor look like bird:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974369339?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974369339?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Then the weather improved for a day or two and so we hurried up into the mountains again - this is the habitat of the Black Grouse - we've seen many birds here and other beautiful things, but no Grouse:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974374124?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974374124?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Sad but true: Although there are still some, they are in decline even here and an elderly, now retired hunter (and former Setter owner) told us, that he'd seen none anymore for the last two years. Honestly: I would not have disturbed them, chased them or flushed them out of the bushes - she always says it's their place, we're the guests!</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974374201?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974374201?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>So we went back to the coast. South of Stavanger there is an area called Jaeren; it is one of the largest birding areas in Europe, spread over more than 1000 km2 and with a coast line of 65 km of sandy or partly stony beach. This Arctic Tern (Küstenseeschwalbe, Sterna paradisaea) was sitting portrait on it's pole:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974375844?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974375844?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>This is a young and still very fluffy Oystercatcher (Austernfischer, Haematophus ostralegus) exploring the beach:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974377384?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974377384?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>A Northern Lapwing (Kiebitz, Vanellus vanellus), also known as Peewit or Green Plover is watching us, so that we do not get too close:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974379307?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974379307?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>We also went several hundred kilometres further north to the bird island of Runde, a nature reserve near Ålesund. This Great Skua (Grosse Raubmöve, Stercorarius skua) was sitting less than 20 m from us on it's nest:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974380963?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974380963?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>The Skuas can be quite aggressive and attack intruders, but in this nature reserve, where they know, you only shoot with a camera and do not leave the path, they were very friendly even with me. This is us on the path near the Skua:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974382757?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974382757?profile=original" width="680" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Last but not least, the reason, we went all the way up (again!), the Atlantic Puffin (Papageientaucher, Fratercula arctica), the clown among the birds:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974383126?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974383126?profile=original" width="571" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>We were there last year but could not stay and were therefore not able to take any photos of the Puffins because they come back in from the sea only in the evening, between 7 and 9 pm! Some youngsters seem to be hungry:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974383428?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974383428?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>All in all, we've seen more than 80 different species and I could show you only some of the birds. She also just reminded me that my blog must come to an end now and that I have not even mentioned one of the many beautiful orchids or other flowers, we've seen! So, until next time then!</p>For Kenny - or how to pull that Sky back in...tag:irishsetters.ning.com,2012-10-25:865021:BlogPost:9987182012-10-25T15:00:00.000ZCorneliahttp://irishsetters.ning.com/profile/Cornelia

<p>Some of you might remember my blog from last year about my attempt of a portrait of Joy in tricky light condition and how I solved it with a fill flash and a head shot. Here's the blog from last year:…</p>
<p></p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974361644?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974361644?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Some of you might remember my blog from last year about my attempt of a portrait of Joy in tricky light condition and how I solved it with a fill flash and a head shot. Here's the blog from last year:</p>
<p><a href="http://irishsetters.ning.com/profiles/blogs/for-debbie-or-the-long-way-to-a-portrait" target="_self">http://irishsetters.ning.com/profiles/blogs/for-debbie-or-the-long-way-to-a-portrait</a></p>
<p>And here is the photo I 'discarded' then because the sky is washed out:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974361813?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974361813?profile=original" width="600" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Having learned some additional ways on how to use PS, I tried to edit this photo. As I always shoot RAW (Nikon NEF), I get to PS RAW converter when opening a photo.</p>
<p>On the screenshot below, you can see that I have all settings on 0, except brightness on +25 (I learned that in a tutorial and will just use it for now) and WB as shot (including temperature and tint). On the histogram (top right), I already clicked on the yellow icon and the washed out highlights are now marked red on my photo:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974364624?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974364624?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>On my next screenshot, you can see that I changed the exposure just to the point where my red markings disappear, which gives me a value of -0.24. That's not too bad; that is less than a third of an f-stop. Of course, if that sky would have been totally washed out, I could have just trashed the photo or cropped it.</p>
<p>I also have already used the straighten tool (top bar, to the right of the crop tool) and have drawn a line over my horizon to keep the water in the ocean :-). When you let go of the cursor, you automatically get to the crop tool and find a corrected rectangle. Just double click the photo and then open your image:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974366803?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974366803?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>The sky is now visible everywhere but you might like it to be a bit more dramatic. One of the most important thing in PS is to understand the work with layers. So the first thing I do is, I duplicate the layer. A window does now appear and calls the new layer 'Background copy' - I changed it to 'sky'. On that layer (make sure it is highlighted blue; on the right side) I select the sky with the selection tool (left, about fourth from top). You can also save your selection for further use and give it a name. Next time you want to work on it just go to load selection (again make sure the layer your selection is on, is highlighted blue).</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974367050?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974367050?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Before you save your selection, you can smoothen it by clicking 'refine edge' (top bar). A pop-up window appears. At the top of that window, you see a black arrow on blue ground; click on it and choose 'on black'. Then with your cursor 'paint' over the black edge and when you're done, click ok. On the next screenshot you can see where my cursor was - just right of the background mountain. Refining your edge is very important for instance when you want to separate Setter hair from a sky background!</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974367335?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974367335?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>You can now for instance just darken your sky by adjusting the brightness (adjustments/first icon) - only the selected area will be affected! </p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974368326?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974368326?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>When your done merge the sky and the background layer or your file will become too large (depending how many layers you've created). Click on both to highlight them (not the brightness layer), go to layer menu (top bar) and merge layers (near the bottom).</p>
<p>I have worked with many more layers on this photo and changed contrast, colour, tone in sections but thought of just showing how a selection could be made on a seperate layer and used for something like the sky - or else this blog would have never ended... :-). I hope this was helpful. Come and join us on Camera Corner...</p>

<p>This summer, so they told me, we were to go back to some of the beautiful places in Norway we've seen last year for extended hikes. I was very much looking forward to this and eagerly helped cleaning their shoes and stretched out my paws because they needed waxing too. </p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974362695?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974362695?profile=original" width="580" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Forests and paths were once again gorgeous! So were the soft beds:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974364798?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974364798?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>In Norway, there is also plenty of water everywhere and some places were very idyllic with reflections and small yellow water lilies:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974364960?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974364960?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>The water itself however is very strange - sometimes it is sweet and tasty and sometimes salty and not nice to drink! So I recommend to you all to taste it first before you clench your thirst!</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974364950?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974364950?profile=original" width="654" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Here the water was sweet and the lake was really great to have a nice and long splash. I even favoured them with fetching a stick they kind of lost:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974366749?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974366749?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>This year though, we had very few days like this - up in the mountains, none was stable enough to go hiking: There was snow, rain and floods and they packed their hiking gear in vain! So we enjoyed the rare moments and breathed in the wonderful fresh air - this is elk country btw. - can you smell them?</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974366897?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974366897?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>So - what do you do when you arrive in Oslo in pouring rain and with a bad weather forecast?! First of all, you go out anyway but you drive to an area, where you can at least hope for dry spells - not that I would mind the rain but their camera does and then my story would be at an end - 'Come on Mom, this bridge is quite fun!'.</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974369152?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974369152?profile=original" width="626" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Then you explore the area: Here we are on the oldest 'road' through the Setersdalen (Seter valley). A huge rock like formation with a steep cliff right down to the river did block the way so they had to go over; quite a construction this is! Now, they built a tunnel...</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974371010?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974371010?profile=original" width="590" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Then we were looking for tracks. I really like that! This 'footprint' is from and elk and one of my paws would fit in 5-6 times!</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974371028?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974371028?profile=original" width="658" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>We also wondered if Mr. Beaver was at home:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974372673?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974372673?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>And we discovered things that were not so nice, like this old cart with barrels, which was just left in the forest to rot away:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974372787?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974372787?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Last but not least, one of the best things you can always do in all kinds of weather conditions, is beg the cheese from her sandwich and enjoy being spoiled :-):</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974374562?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974374562?profile=original" width="596" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>To be continued...</p>

<p>But our Joy does not only 'laugh' a lot herself, she is also in the habit of bringing a smile on the face of perfect strangers. She would make a wonderful pat-dog. Just look at the expression on the lady's face! - Sorry, that I started to fix the halti, but the boat was just about to leave:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974346922?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974346922?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>From the vaporetto, the boats that tour the larger canals of Venice, I could quietly take some photos of some of the houses:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974347870?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974347870?profile=original" width="605" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>Here's Joy on the boat - in Italy dogs, as tall as Joy have to wear a muzzle on boats or ferries; I brought one with but managed well with the halti so far, relying on the fact that most people cannot tell the difference:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974349334?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974349334?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>Arriving by boat is always special! Here you can see the Palazzo Ducale and the Campanile di San Marco:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974349455?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974349455?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>"Hello, tall one - are you Venetian?":</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974349479?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974349479?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>Some of the many 'gondola':</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974350972?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974350972?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>"Mmhhh - shall we have fish and crab for lunch?":</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974351311?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974351311?profile=original" width="562" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>Joy did not mind the many tourists - she had only eyes for the pigeons - again follow her gaze diagonally upwards:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974352962?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974352962?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>She even had a hard time follow my 'sit' as there were more pigeons in front and would not care for the beautiful architecture:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974354781?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974354781?profile=original" width="571" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>And...</p>

<p>ACTION!:</p>

<p>Well - we took her to a more quiet 'piazza' to chill out and went on to visit some friends:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974357136?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974357136?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>I hope you enjoyed our short stay as well as we did. As we both had to work on Joy's fourth birthday, we thought this would make up for a belated B'day fun - or as a Setter owner, who'd prefer to stay anonymous, once said: "Our dog is not spoiled, she just sometimes does not know she is a dog."</p>

<p>It is one of the very few lakes here, where most of the path is right by the lakefront and only small bits are tarred:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974337460?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974337460?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>The scenery was fantastic:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974339361?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974339361?profile=original" width="580" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>And the natural sculptures were worth many photo stops:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974339538?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974339538?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>Joy was simply fascinated by the many ducks and swans - so this is how we got a beautiful free stack:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974339919?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974339919?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-center"/></a></p>

<p>"Come play with me!"</p>

<p>Here we are at the lower end of the lake looking back in direction of Hallwil - a cold but beautiful place for a short rest:</p>

<p>In the small swamp near the castle:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974343536?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974343536?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>5,5 hours later - or after the lenght of a half marathon - we were back at the castle - and Joy was still on the lookout for ducks: </p>

<p>Even near the moat of the castle, smiling for the camera was not possible for our dirty little bunny and she would only allow tiredness to creep in on the way back home inside the car:</p>

<p>We rented the same apartment as two years ago and Joy remembered the place immediately running to and fro with a wagging tale and a smiling face. She also recognised her Setter friend of course, once owner of a dog from Susan's A-litter.</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974326001?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974326001?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>It looked, as if the path was prepared just for us - "This way, Joy":</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974327813?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974327813?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>But being Switzerland, there were restaurants and hotels further up the hill, that the owners tried to keep open all year - with quite a bit of effort:</p>

<p>We did not hike all the way up - the snow was soft and the difference of 800 meters in altitude too much for an afternoon stroll :-). </p>

<p>It is not always easy to take a portrait of our 'Lively Bundle of Fur' - here we are at a beach in Norway and Joy was in her explorer mood:</p>

<p>It is not always easy to take a portrait of our 'Lively Bundle of Fur' - here we are at a beach in Norway and Joy was in her explorer mood:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974321354?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974321354?profile=original" width="600" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>I was so busy, trying to get her to sit still for a moment - while she was busy, trying to dig through to Myra :-) - that I did not even notice, that my camera settings were still on 'sunny 16' or beautiful weather, from the day before:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974322903?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974322903?profile=original" width="600" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>Finally, Joy decided to cooperate, so that you can see how gorgeous our holidays were and I noticed my mistake - the sky would have been fine, but Joy and the foreground were too dark; underexposed:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974324382?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974324382?profile=original" width="600" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>So I corrected the settings - however: Without a special filter, the sky is now blurred out and I did not want to return to the car with Joy smiling so nicely:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974325426?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974325426?profile=original" width="600" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>There was nothing else, I could do but aim for a portrait and forget the background (the camera is set on manual f/11, 1/200, ISO 320); the brightness on Joy's smiling face is enhanced with the flash (if set on TTL, it does only add a minimum of light - works only in manual mode!):</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974327514?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974327514?profile=original" width="399" class="align-center"/></a></p>
<p>The end result, you already know - it looks as if we had lovely weather and brilliant sunshine:</p>

<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974321575?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974321575?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>The reason, there is still so much detail left in the photos is in the size of the sensor - it is 4 by 6 cm and has 50'000 pixels; it also has a much larger colour range!! About two weeks ago, we were fortunate to borrow a digital back to my husband's old Swedish middle format camera, containing such a sensor! For those, who have never seen such a camera, here it is:</p>
<p><a target="_self" href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974323088?profile=original"><img class="align-full" width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974323088?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024"/></a></p>
<p>The rectangle to the left with the rounded edges is the 'back' of the camera - this one is not the digital back, but an old film holder back (12 photos 6 x 6 cm). The square in the middle is the box containing the mirror and the smaller square on top is where you look through (you see the picture laterally reversed) - to the right an old Zeiss lens. Hasselblad designed a digital back, that can be combined with the old system - the camera above is about 20 years old and fully mechanical - no light meter, no AF, no nothing!! (even with the digital back btw.) - and so it took a very patient Joy, who would wait half a minute, each time I tried to focus.</p>
<p><a target="_self" href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974324095?profile=original"><img class="align-full" width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974324095?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024"/></a></p>
<p>To complete the photos, we used two (very old) professional flashes by Broncolor and had Joy lay down on a large piece of white linnen. Even if she does like to be presented in the best light, the spoken piece of equippent is far to expensive to be put on the Christmas wish list - sigh - but it was nice to play with it for a weekend:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974326112?profile=original" target="_self"><img width="750" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974326112?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024" width="750" class="align-full"/></a></p>
<p>Many of you have seen those last two photos before and I want to thank you all once more for your very nice comments! No further comment on that photo!! We just sometimes have different interests :-). We went from Sogne Fjord up into the mountains - this is just one of the glacier arms coming down from Josterdal's Breen (breen = glacier) - the pool was great to have a splash!!…</p>

<p><a target="_self" href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974304852?profile=original"><img class="align-center" width="432" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974304852?profile=original"/></a>The Atlantic Ocean near the famous Atlanitc Veien (veien = road) was full of funny smelling, moving plants! I tried some - they tasted awful!</p>
<p><a target="_self" href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974305835?profile=original"><img class="align-center" width="600" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974305835?profile=original"/></a>Hungry as I was in so much fresh air, I tried my best to get a share of her sandwich! Bet, I would be faster than what she could put it to her mouth?</p>
<p><a target="_self" href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974307869?profile=original"><img class="align-center" width="428" src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974307869?profile=original"/></a>Ups! Someone else was interested in our sandwich - a 'Great Black-backed Gull' (Larus marinus).</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974309836?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974309836?profile=original" width="600" class="align-center"/></a>After another long drive through the rain, we finally made it - 71° 10' 21" North, 25° 47' 0" East, the North Cape, Norway!</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974313118?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974313118?profile=original" width="446" class="align-center"/></a>And one photo to prove, that I was there! Lucky us, we had 20°degrees celsius that morning <em>(with a camper, you can just stay overnight.)</em>:</p>
<p><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974313129?profile=original" width="422" class="align-center"/></p>
<p>Fasten your seatbelts, I'm ready to take off!!! And what did I see?</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974313405?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974313405?profile=original" width="600" class="align-center"/></a>Reindeer!! Now these were far more interesting than sitting nicely at the Cape - pitty, she did not allow any chasing..</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974313560?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974313560?profile=original" width="600" class="align-center"/></a>Some other smelling things were found in Nusfjord, a small fishermen's village on the Lofoten Islands: Dead fish heads left outside to dry:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974313549?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974313549?profile=original" width="423" class="align-center"/></a>We spent a gorgeous week on the islands and I had many good runs along the beaches. We saw whales, seals and on this beach an otter <em>(sorry - no photos)</em> - she allowed me to run and chase the yet sleepy seagulls off the beach :-) - see: I'm very happy!!! <em>(We camped where the houses are in the background)</em></p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974313766?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974313766?profile=original" width="600" class="align-center"/></a>Once more they got a bit nostalgic about an old bicycle trip - she found the rights hill and nearly the same angle as years before, where she made her most favourite b&w photo - there were so many newly built houses, that we searched long for this view:</p>
<p><a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974315570?profile=original" target="_self"><img src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1974315570?profile=original" width="600" class="align-center"/></a>On her homepage, you can see a scan of the old b&w fineprint, he's enlarged in their own darkroom - that was before digital :-)) <a href="http://www.playativity.com/30201/30301.html">http://www.playativity.com/30201/30301.html</a></p>
<p>Gotta go now - more on the Lofoten Islands and our way home in the third and last part of my story...</p>
