Even though she had a great litter of 12 puppies in the summer, we managed to squeeze in three compertitions in the autum.
Not enough to defend her title from 2008 (I thought), but there was no more time and no more competitions close by.
Now that all points are added up it shows that we DID win the title of Best Obedience Setter in Sweden for the second year running!
Life is not always easy and its good to remember that however much we plan ahead, and however much we dream and however careful we are, it can all come to a very sudden end.
Life is not always easy and its good to remember that however much we plan ahead, and however much we dream and however careful we are, it can all come to a very sudden end.

We had started Ivy up after her foal and all was going smoothly.
She loved being back at work, even if it was only in the padock with her foal running next to her.
One night she suddenly got stomach ache. Alexandra walked with her for ages, but instead of getting better, it got worse.
So Ivy had to go to the animalhospital and was operated on instantly. The operation lasted for 6 hours and 6 meters of her intestine had to be removed due to a twisted intestine. Against all odds, she survived the operation and although it was a matter of life and death for a week, she was going to make it!
When we brought her home, she was her usual (hungry) self.
Once again on a strict and controlled diet, she stood in her box calling for constant attention...like...Hey! Someone forgot to feed me! She went for long walks and behaved just as she had before the disaster.

To begin with, there was the small problem of the foal calling and Ivy calling for her foal. She had after all had her whole stomach cut open and could do without a hungry foal. But things were calming down on the second day and day three at home was much calmer.
She was being walked and was very alert.
Until it was feeding time...
Ivy, whos main interest in life was food, would not even look at her foodbowl.
Back to the animal hospital.
And then things went from bad to worse.
She was put down on the 8th of december, only 8 years old.

A brave jumper that never gave up and would have a go at any fence...a super mum (ah well if you dont take into account that she kept trying to steal the foals food).
We are so happy that we at least have her foal...and if the foal is only half as good as her mum, she will be a great horse!

Take care of all the ones you love, sometimes life is far shorter that we think.Scandinavias biggest puppy-show...almost 1300 puppies in Malmö 8/11tag:irishsetters.ning.com,2009-11-10:865021:BlogPost:2591052009-11-10T06:54:22.000Zursula wilbyhttp://irishsetters.ning.com/profile/mossby188
Best of Breed irish setter (and reserve gundog group) was Rusa (Röde Baronens It Aint Me Babe).

Once again I realised why I enter so few shows...it took all day and then finally there we were...in the big ring. And Rusa certainly made the most of it! From behaving perfectly in the breed-ring, she went to bouncing all over the place with joy, grabbing hold of the lead and having a great time.
Life is not always easy and things don’t always run as smoothly as we wish. We were delighted with our filly, well built legs, full of joy, but then, day 3 she was walking on three legs and run a fever. Not all that much, but enough to worry us and bring a vet out.
The result was a trip straight to the animal hospital. A long and nightmarish drive with Ivy calling for her foal in the trailer and us knowing we had an unsteady three-day old foal standing or laying next to her in a very confined space.
But the trip went well and the foal (still unnamed) was operated on straight away, flushing the joint on her back-leg.
We were told the outcome was uncertain.
But then we picked both up one week later, the foal shaved in various parts of her body, but now with a very good prognosis of full recovery as the joint was not affected at all.

There are still daily injections and a lot of medication ahead. We are keeping our fingers crossed that this is the end of the nightmare…
It looks as if things are moving in the right direction.
I’m not great on remembering birthdays, most of the time not even my own. I’m not even all that worried about celebrating it. So the fact that the ultimate day for mating happened to coincide with my birthday did not worry me all that much.

I can of course think of better ways to spend your birthday than a 5 hour-long train journey, but so what?
It turned out to be a great day!
Perhaps not all that glamorous (unless you consider a take-away Chinese and standing out in the cold holding two dogs during a very long tie glamorous).

But Camilla and I did have the champagne to go with it and I of course had my cigars (thinking my birthday would be a good time to kick THAT habit – but not doing much about it).
We sat up talking about old time (like you do when you are getting older and older…and tipsier by the minute).

After the second mating the day after, there was the same boring journey back…
But once I got home and turned on the computer, I was totally overwhelmed!
Loads of Birthday-greetings from all over the world!
Wow!
So thank you all for sending those messages! It was great and I hope I will one day see you all in person.

Tons of love to you all
I got the book about the the photographer Karl Fr. Andersson and having gone through hundreds of wonderful photos, I have only found one other setter.

(In fact there is only one other dog in the book, but this may well be due to the fact that as exposures were so very long, you had to stand 100% still not to end up as a fuzzy image. My personal belief is that dogs were banned from most photos as not to spoil it all...)

This english setter was owned by Nils Fock (a Swede with Geman/Baltic background). A world-traveler (long trips to Africa, America and South America) and married to an american wife.
There is tons of information about this setter-owner but not a single mention of his dog.
Who actually looks quite like the english setter that was owned by my "kitchen-man".
As the photographer Karl Fr. Andersson appears to have been active in the area for a relativly limited time (according to the book 1896 - 1910) it can well be assumed that the two english setters are in fact related.

But guesswork is as far as it goes...Unknown setterownertag:irishsetters.ning.com,2008-11-27:865021:BlogPost:1196012008-11-27T06:30:00.000Zursula wilbyhttp://irishsetters.ning.com/profile/mossby188
