Bailey's Collar Could Have Taken His Life

I would like to send an alert out after an event last night. Last night we almost lost our boy. His collar got caught on a knob of the dresser cutting off his passage to the airway, he tried to free himself, but to no avail.

The only reason he was alright was because we were there, we heard unusual noises and investigated the noise.

When we got to him he was motionless. We managed to free him and without any  efforts to resuscitate him, with just some love he was fine.

I now have grave concerns about a dog wearing his collar in the house. What would have happened if we were not home? My husband and I have decided to remove his collar when he is in the house and when he cannot be monitored closely.

To All of you, I thank you so much for your guidance and words of comfort. Our pets are just like our children and you got to watch them just as close, tripping hazards, choking hazards, teaching them not to eat everything they find, don't chew wood pieces, and the list goes on. One needs another set of eyes and ears to get a grasp of all they do. Never in my life have I found such a deep love for the breed, the support from the "Setter Community" is overwhelming. I will need you more than I can imagine if I ever lose my boy, he is a true companion with such love and loyalty.

Dee I am so sorry for your sad heart, that is a very sad story, I feel so bad for you. It will take a long long time to get over that if you ever do. Thank you for sharing your story with me. Thank you for being so kind.

Hi Eileen

So glad to read that Bailey is OK. What a fright.  I don't leave collars on my dogs at home.  I have heard of this type of thing happening to others.

Thanks for the reminder of how dangerous they can be.

cheers, Cheryl

What a shocking experience ..

I'm so relieved that your boy is okay..

My boy's never wear a collar , because I had almost a similer experience in the forrest..

One of my boy's was hunting after a rabbit and he got trapped to a branch of tree with his collar and almost broke his neck..

Give Baily a big hug from me ..

My dog never wear collar inside because I know that this is dangerous. And one more thing to all - remember no collars when swimming!!!

Frans you are so sweet.  I always use a life jacket when he is in the water because he is crazy about the water and won't come out. I worry that he will tire before he can swim to shore. I have even tied a rope to his life vest so I can pull him back in. He gets out there and I can hear him breathing heavy and see him shivering. My goodness I never thought about dangers while the dog is swimming. What could happen? You guys are wonderful.
