Hank I presume you talk about main land Europe? As far as I know neither Ireland or the British Isles have wild boar!! And would love to see some photos of your Clancy taking on wild boar!

I think that it is nice to have Wild Boar, but they are, and have always been, some of the most dangerous of animals, and a sow with piglets is very dangerous, but a wild boar with piglets, well I would never want to meet one on a dark night, especially with my dogs.

Keep looking at that pic!
Wild boars are on the rise in numbers in most parts of Europe, so chances of meeting one with a dog as well. Even in densely populated countries like the Netherlands. Can be quite dangerous, more cases of killed or severely wounded dogs reported.

Some working setters can bring them down if needed. No fear here when one like Clancy would meet one she's quicker than Cassius Clay with a down to earth basic approach in everything from rats to whatever even retrieving…

I dont know how much instinct dogs would have. Perhaps some have, other dont. Just a few weeks ago we had a pet-dog killed by a wild boar in Skrylle, a very well visited wood (outside Lund) with loads of public pathways and tracks for jogging etc. The dog was off the lead and went into the woods. Not HUGE forests, just a wood that looks more like a park.
The dog was a fair size, so no little thing that would die by mistake.
I think there is perhaps a differance when it comes to WHERE the Boars are.
In this particular place I am talking about, there is a constant traffic of people and dogs that I suppose that the boars are no longer afraid of human or doggy smells.
Where as I can see that that would not be the case with you Camilla. We used to keep pigs and the…tag:irishsetters.ning.com,2008-11-27:865021:Comment:1197552008-11-27T17:14:39.033ZDee Rancehttp://irishsetters.ning.com/profile/DeeRance
We used to keep pigs and the dogs used to go after them. I just wouldn't be able to trust them, my dogs used to love 'rounding up' the pigs when they got out of their pens, are pigs the same as wild boar??? perhaps they would know to keep away from them.....I would hope so

Oh my, Wild Boar, so dangerous you dog is so good, mine would be off and running after them and that, probably, would be the last I saw of them, as well, we just have Deer to chase and they haven't seen them lately.
What wonderful pictures and having your camera as well, I always see things when I don't have the camera. Its like the fisherman with the one that got away, never any proof.

Oh my god! Over here in Sweden they warn you constantly from having dogs off the lead in woods where you may find wild boars. Also several dogs have been killed...so its good that nothing happened.
