We can't leave Dash outside all day - much as he would love it - because our property is not fenced. He's got plenty of acreage to roam around (including a lovely creek and woods) and he knows his property boundaries. But his wanderlust (i.e., an evil squirrel) would encourage him to drift over to the neighbor's...and then to their neighbor's...and then to their neighbors...and the next thing I'd know is he'd be in Pennsylvania annoying some nice tourists. I don't worry about him being stolen as we are too rural for that but I do worry about him wandering off and being pesky. Happily, EVERYONE in the area knows Dash and would be quick to tell me if they'd seen the big red dope wandering where he shouldn't (and I am speaking from experience). Dash went through the same stage at about the same age. I couldn't feed him enough! I got a little panicked with all the bloat talk and then I realized he'd grown like 2" in a month. No wonder he was so hungry! For at least the last four months (he's 18 months old) he's been Mr. Picky Eater. I feed him twice a day - a combination of meat and Blue Buffalo Lamb & Rice. He eats 1 1/5 cups of BB 2x a day with chopped meat and water added in. He loves it but will not eat the dry food with…

He eats 1 1/5 cups of BB 2x a day with chopped meat and water added in. He loves it but will not eat the dry food with anything but fresh meat. He simply refuses to eat. I've tried waiting him out ("If he gets hungry enough, he'll eat!") but he won't eat. My last dog was a Labrador, so you can imagine the adjustments I've made! He will eat any type of people food, including bananas (!), which is one reason why I've switched to 2x a day feed instead of 3x - he gets a third meal from me and the family sharing goodies with him (plus dog treats and biscuits). And Dashy is definitely thin - but not skinny! Reuben is quite lazy in the morning too and is more than happy to get out of bed when we get up at whatever time, say hello and jump back in to bed. He doesn't even want to pee! Hope this stays the same forever!

Yes, showing their leads to them would definitely work!!! But I like it this way, and wouldn't want to change them ;-). I work at home and it gives me a chance to get some stuff done before we go for our first walk! We do go to bed late in this house, and both dogs get the opportunity for a comfort break at 7ish, but Luna never takes up the offer. Murphy pops outside with a bit of persuasion, does both businesses, then comes straight back to bed! Honestly! When we rescued Murphy back in…

Murphy pops outside with a bit of persuasion, does both businesses, then comes straight back to bed! Honestly! When we rescued Murphy back in December I thought that would be the end of lying in and having time for a few chores before our walk, but within a few days he naturally fell into a routine. Perhaps he couldn't believe he was getting to lie on our bed! The rest is history! Hi Susan,

Hi Susan,
Yes I quite agree with you with liking lifestyle chats...one learns a lot on how to best look after our dogs! I, like you, only use complete food (and usually only the type made of meat and rice or fish and rice) as a back-up. My dogs love their raw tripe, although at this time of year the smell can be rather off-putting....so then I feed more meat. I have always fed twice a day, at lunchtime and in the evening! So Louise if I were you I would feed a light breakfast before you go off…

So Louise if I were you I would feed a light breakfast before you go off to College because I don't think it would be fair on a young dog to wait all day on an empty stomach....but I suppose you will have to try and see what works best for him and you! We also feed a lot of raw foods and bones, the funniest thing was that when we ordered ribs, I thought they'd look like the ones humans eat (we're vegetarian) but no...they came attached to the sternum- they LOVED it! We also feed veg (put through the processor as it's easier to digest) and rice- in fact they love the veg/rice/tripe days a lot!
They also love sardines, tuna, cheese, lard(! when Freddie was thin). When Izzie was off her food after a pyo/spay she found 'junk food' quite tasty-the…

Yes he loves pilchards either in brine or tomato sauce! he also really likes Tuna too but i am not so keen on the fishy dog breath afterwards - eeekkk
I did find out yesterday that he doesn't like bananas as there was a little pile of them placed around an empty bowl. Silly me there I was thinking dogs ate everything!

Thanks Sue, I have decided to go with your advice and today, i gave reuben a small bowl of meat and kibble a while after exercise and then a main meal at 6.30pm ish and already feel much better about it. reuben would never just eat a bowl of kibble, so i do put fish, eggs, meat etc mixed in with it to encourage him to eat and it seems to work.
And exactly i agree we can only take precautions that we feasibly can and just hope we are not one of the unlucky ones otherwise we wouldn't go anywhere…

Now why would you think that I would disagree, only chicken wings I don't like...but necks are mainly cartilage the bone doesn't seem to splinter as do the wing bones, what is ''Complete bix'' is that the same as the Royal Canin that I give, And Fin looks at me as if to say ''what you have got the be joking'' I do feed raw lamb mince never tried Gizzards, Bit will give some of it a go, As you say if it ain't broke don't fix it, but Fin's feeding is definitely ''broke'' have been trying all…
