Hi all,
I have owned irish for 30 yrs. I don't show unfortunately, due to problems I have encountered with my girls. I fell in love with the irish because of those black & white photos I saw in the 70's & all the breeds you mention I know & love because these men got it right. We all love the irish because of their beautiful spirits. Personally I would love to see the best possible bloodlines so we keep our beautiful species true to form.

Gail said “…delve into some of the modern day pedigrees these dogs are in fact still 'alive'!” I agree these dogs still sit behind some of the dogs of today. I’m not sure whether we could say they are still having an impact on the type that is being bred on from them. Wilangi King Quail sits behind (in the 5th and 6th generation) in my young boy, Clancy (so then 4 of the 5 pictures shown all sit there, plus relatives of the 5th dog). Love to think he looked like them!

Do we agree that the dogs pictured below are beautiful examples of Irish Setters? Breeders of the 70’s got it right .... we seem to agree that they did. Do they resemble the dogs of today that we see at shows here in Australia?
What has changed? Heads? Rear End Angulation? Gait? ……
How did we lose these beautiful heads? How did we lose the structure? Why haven’t we been able to maintain these traits from these dogs of the 70’s? Can we correct it now?

My foundation bitch was a Ballymoss and her first litter was to Jaunty and then her second to Arizona. Jaunty is behind all of the present Fieldworthys but sadly I lost the line to Arizona, who gave me wonderful coats. I then focussed on improving heads through using Wendover line dogs and importing a bitch in whelp from the UK. I am now most happy with the heads that I have and that my boys produce. In fact people in the UK wanted to know how I had got the heads and as a result Richmond was used over there. Cheryl, in my opinion the majority of dogs being shown downunder bear little resemblance to the fab dogs we had in the 70's in Aust and NZ. If breeders wanted to get back that breed type it would be possible but do they want to?

Yes, I agree Gayle, I don’t believe we see many IS today here in Aus that bear much resemblance to the dogs of the 70’s. I also agree with you that it is possible to get back to that breed type, but I wonder… are there enough breeders who want to have these heads and structures back or are they happy with the direction the breed has taken. I know I won’t give up on getting them back. I would love to see those beautiful dogs again all over!! I do love your boy, Richmond. Well done Gayle for getting the recognition of producing your lovely dogs.

Hi everyone.
Well it was good to recieve a few comments about our favorite dogs. I feel that at one stage during the 70/80's that although we probably had the best irish in the world,it became a belief that we had to use imported dogs mainly from the US and that would give us better coat (which it did). Even though we may have lost arguably the racy movement. We still have some lovely heads here but we also have some bucket heads both US and UK that in my opinion dont have a gentle expression. Lets talk and agree or agree to disagree as I would like to know what you might have to say.
Cheers Rick

No news here for me in Mackay. Another quiet weekend! My son, Mitchell is doing tracking training with Clancy and they are working really well together. They hope to have him in a tracking trial later in the year.

I heard from Troy, that Clancy's brother won Group 3 down in Rocky the other weekend!

cheers
