Hi - just joined. Have had Irish Setter's for 27 years and now also have a Gordon called Robbie. Have now 1 Irish and 1 Gordon, only 8 months old and into everything!!
Hi, just joined i have 1 Gordon Setter "Campbell" an absolute gentleman, 5 Irish , 2 English and 2 English Springer Spaniels, think i have enough now!!
Good to see all these other Gordon lovers out there. I was feeling kind of isolated here in the Philippines. As far as I can tell, I've got the only Gordon here - but you never know when one will come tearing around the corner. Sadie is now seven years old, I got her at 12 weeks and she has brought many hours of joy to my life. I have a sweatshirt with my Gordon's picture on the front that says "She's a Gordon Setter" because of all the people that would come up to me to ask "what breed of dog is that? Too hot to wear it over here. Nice site.
Hi everyone, I have one georgeous Gordon boy, Benson (7) who is very much a pet and one IRWS bitch, Bess (2) who is being shown quite successfully at the moment. I am totally smitten with Gordons but have had a few issues with my big boy, so unless I get a divorce (not likely, I hasten to add), he will sadly be my only Gordon.
i am getting ready for Crufts now , leaving tomorrow very early , looking forward to meet who ever will be there , we have Kilnrae Whirlwind travelling with us
How did everyone do at Crufts?? Hall 1 was so busy I didnt venture away from the red and white benches so would be nice to hear how everyone else faired
I just joined this group. I live in California and have owned and bred Gordon Setters for forty years. I have bred both show and field champions and National Field Champions. I currently have a third generation National Champion. Check out my web site at www.tomarsetters.webs.com
Thus far I have never had a problem introducing a puppy to the group. You just need to keep an eye on them at first to make sure that the pup doesn't annoy the older dogs to the point of no return. My sixteen year old Gordon still tries to play with the puppies, I just make sure they don't get too rambunctious with her.
With adding an older dog to the mix you just need to make sure that they all know that you are the alpha dog and won't tolerate any unseemly behavior.
hi i am very fond of gordans my good friend has one and have known her since she was a pup lovely with everyone and other dogs super temperment also very interesting judging them i hope that more will sign up lovely breed
This is Crackers, my third generation National Field Champion. His coat has been shaved for competition. He is a great snuggler on the couch and so easy to live with.
wishing every one a happy new year delighted to pass on the news that i with my good friend have a gordon pup she will be 7 months 2 january she is lovely (Somerled Glen Devon)we call her devon full of life gets on great with annie my red setter so looking forward to her first show on the 6th january will keep you up to date hope to have a photo of her soon to put up on gordan setters site best of luck
Hi, I have 1 Irish setter who is 6 years old now and a 2 year old who's mother was an Irish and his father a Gordon. Obviously they are both just pets who we love to bits. I have owned Reds for many years but my youngster Logan it a total joy and unlike any other dog I have ever known.
To be honest I am not sure that it is a cross one ould encourage. I am not sure if your dogs are from accidental matings or a more deliberate plan but it seems to me that nether breed is currently in the best state of health to "dabble" across each other.
What!!! how rude. I did not cross them, Logan has a full bill of health and is a wonderful dog . Both parents were show dogs but yes the mating was accidental. Both my dogs are pets and will never be bred from.
Please explain saying ' neither breed is currently in the best state of health'. Are you accussing me of 'dabbling'?
I have re read my comment and dont find anything "rude" about it.
In the past decade we have had so many breeds crossed in the name of "designer" dogs and there seems to have been no thought to the health and welfare of either breed.
I appreciate that your dogs have come from accidental encounters and you have no intention of breeding form them but sadly this is not always the case.
an accidental cross these days is often encoraged to become a "desgner" cross - especially if the puppies are especially attractive - they begin to be promoted and sold for large sums of money and as I already said........
The Gordon Setter is currently under great strain with large numbers of the breed showing sogns of bing carriers or affected by RCD (potentially two strais)
The Iris Setter is equally afflicted, meaning that there must be a great deal of consideration before matings take place.
Because of the nature of pedigree cross matings these days I cnt help thinking that accidental crosses should be terminated in order to discourage experimental crosses or the creation of an "Iri tan" or a "black Irish"
Hi Mary, welcome here! Both your boys look lovely! Hope you'll have a good time on here. The Gordon group is normally a bit quiet - think most of us are on Facebook now, but hopefully you'll be able to enjoy making friends and looking at nice photos!
sorry if I mis-read your text but it came across that you were referring to my boys as 'not in the best state'. I was not asking for recomendation to breed this mix mearly to ask if anyone had also experienced this.
Even as a pet owner I understand your comments and fully agree. I am not without understanding of the Reds as have owned them for 30 years.
If it wasn't for the health issues by cross breading I would highly recommend a 'Logan'. lol Not only is he the most loving boy I have ever owned but also his temperament is 2nd to none. As you can see from my picture he is beautiful (even after his paddle...lol) Logan has the slim build of the Irish and the sleek coat but with the Gordon colouring and the willingness to please. He is a very loved dog who I am proud to own.
I have never owned or wanted to encourage cross breeding for the reasons you say aswell but when looking for a companion for Bailey and undecided if to have another red or to have my 1st Gordon I saw this cross you can understand my willingness to travel 100's of miles to welcome him to my family. I have never regreated a second.
