Of course I don't mind - I was just sitting her by myself til you showed up!
I love Gordon Setters too but two Irish are enough for me at the moment!
Thanks for joining, maybe we will organise a big Scottish setter meet one day? Do you show your Gordon? I am just starting out in showing with my new pup.
Hi there you two, never thought of making a Scottish section, hope non Scots join as well, we don't want to be thought of a insular, I hope everyone is welcome????? Dee and the girls
Of course all are welcome, I don't want to exclude anyone at all as everyone has been very lovely to me! I am interested in seeing how many owners are around 'locally' as we have only ever meet one or two setter owners on our walks.
I also thought it might be nice to ask about favourite walks, dog friendly places to stay and eat - some local knowledge which might be use to anyone visiting Scotland for shows or holidays?
Good idea Linda. Just thought I'd let you all know about some where I regularly stop on the A9 when I'm back and forth to shows, it's the House of Bruar. If you go round the back there is a lovely walk up by the waterfall where I let my dogs stretch their legs. If we're on our way home from showing I also let them relax by going for a little paddle at the bottom end where it is fairly shallow. Another thing worth noteing is that they've added a shaded area in the car park for dog owners. Unfortunately they've forgotten to add a dog waste bin anywhere but there are ordinary bins dotted around you just have to make the extra effort to find them. Hope this info is useful to someone :-)
I hope you manage to resist the temptation to shop there!? My friend works there as their web designer - he says their home-made soup is lovely, but a bit expensive, like everything else. Maybe I will stop by on my way back from Craigellechie some time and see for myself. That waterfall sounds nice.
Hi there all.
Jennifer is the place well signposted??? I was talking to Nicole and she suggested that it might be nice if we could find somewhere we could all go and walk the dogs, it would make a great picture lots of setters running together.
Something just came to me it may be out of the way, but St Andrews beach is huge and at the end of the summer there wont be many people... anyone got any better suggestions or another idea?????
Dee and the girls
The House of Bruar looks very good, indeed. Thanks very much Jennifer. We'll try that one out sometime too when we're in the area.
St. Andrews sounds good, Dee. It would be great to have a setter day out :-)
I used to live in Scotland...and I own Setters...do I qualify for membership? (If it helps sway you, I left my heart in Scotland when I returned to Australia...)
Hi everybody,
we do not live in Scotland, but from part of my name you can guess where my husband' family is from and where our hearts are! And we have a Scottish IRWS as guest in our house at the moment.. will be over sonn again, too.
Silvia
I love the idea of a setter day out, hopefully lots more people will contribute to the 'Favourite walks' post and we will have lots of places to choose from.
Well, we usually visit Uncle Bill in Inverness - he is over 80 and we want to see him when we go over. Last year we did a tour around Scotland. We travel in our camper van and have two or three dogs with us. We picked up archie from Margaret last year and will bring him back sometime in fall. Margaret lives in the boonies - up in the mountains in the most lovely area but far from any town and store. We drove up with our van - dear me, could not get to her house, had to walk - there is no real road. And it was raining a lot when we were over. All our 2500 photos are on the net - http://picasaweb.google.at/reddeeririshsetters
There are so many places still to see - if you can tell me some, I would be glad. Next years holiday will be Ireland!
Silvia
welcome to all the new members, especially those from other parts of the world, anyone who has ever visited or stayed in our beautiful part of the world, always has a space in their harts for it for ever. As far as the walks are concerned, I am still learning in this part of Scotland but unfortunately I have found that most of the walks are restricted (SHEEP) but any suggestions would be welcome, different parts of Scotland have different restrictions but most of the beaches are great, from Fraserburgh down its mostly sand and lots of it....Dee and the girls
I'm in the NE of Scotland, and live in a cottage on the Cabrach and Glenfiddich estate, a 57000 acre sporting estate, which has some very old associations with setters
It used to belong to the Dukes of Richmond and Gordon and they kept their dogs up here. The old kennels are still at Glenfiddich Lodge but empty now.
In the nineteenth century Edward Laverack rented the Cabrach shootings and brought his setters up here to break them
More recently John Kerr (Rushfield) worked a team of Irish and Irish Red and White Setters on the estate, but nowadays the shooting is all driven, so no work for setters here any more. Very sad. I take my setters over to the next estate at Craig Castle . My son works on the shoots on Cabrach and Glenfiddich but all the dogs used here now are spaniels and retrievers
Not far from here, near Keith, were the kennels of Isaac Sharpe (Stylish). It was a huge kennels, spread over 3 sites, with over 400 dogs. Isaac Sharpe bought the last of the Gordon Castle dogs, so they were continued in his lines until he died in the late 1930s. His dogs went all over the world, even to Russia. He was a friend of Waldemar Marr
So this was historically a great area for setters, so sad there is very little work for them now. Most estates in this part of Scotland have only driven shooting. Only a few setter breeders left, and mostly show dogs.
We still have some good field trials though in the area, probably the best ones are the North of Scotland Gundog Association trials in August at Tillypronie
And its a great area for walking dogs , for anybody up here on holiday
August 12. First day of the grouse season in Scotland. My son was out today, the birds are very poor and the young ones hardly off the ground after the wet summer. Five guns and they got only six brace

I'm just curious to see how many of us Scots are here!
