Hi there Deborah, welcome to the site I am sure you will like it here. I first went out to buy an English setter but there wasn't one to be had, so I bought an Irish. That was 37 years ago I still have the Irish, (obviously not the same one) Dee and the girls
  • Dee Rance

Hi there, the first Irish I got was by default, I went to get an English (orange) I knew no different and when to a 'puppy farm' and ended up with an Irish. Poor little thing had to be taken back, and a neighbor found Ross 'who's picture is on my website' I never did get my English, I have always had a love for them though. A Great Dane I don't have the room for it, 'great' dogs but too big for me, If I had a husband I am sure that he would put his foot down at any more, my ex didn't want me to have any more dogs well I have more dogs and no husband. I do have 4 grandchildren now though, they take a lot of my time. Nice to meet you too. Dee and the girls
  • Myra Thomas-Rhodes

Lovely part of the country, Deborah. I just love England still, with a passion.
  • Sandra Mather

hello there how lovely owning a gt dane . ive friend who come our training club with gt danes and they are so lovely.they have a blue and a harlquin. What colour is your dane.
  • Sandra Mather

where are you in the country. im in s.o. t. Do you want to keep a dog or bitch.would you like to ring me for a chat then i could explain in more detail.
You say they are 7 wks old. you need to stand them in show pose take picture front and side of each one in the litter dogs and bitches. i give all new owners one of those shots anyhow.but thats the start.
  • Sandra Mather

    >aAn operation may be the answer but as yet she is to young for that upset. If you are still getting puppy calls you could pass them on to me.As for picking out a bitch puppy look at the photo and focus on strifle, shoulders and front. the head is last to complete. But the bone density and correct bend are important. You need a good front because unless you can guarantee enough hill work to help drop the chest it wont have a starting point. All this can be seen from photos taken usually at 5-6 wks but in your case you need to do them straight away as they are changing now all the time. And they will be off soon and you dont want to make the wrong choice.
  • Sandra Mather

i dont use bins as you say they get in them . i use a carry bag in the window. also the cats go in that so sometimes rubbish is in the sink.i used to have a bin with the flat lid and they used to leave that alone but the rest i give up.have you taken your pics yet.
i wouldnt pick the one that comes to you because you love them all.i pick out would you believe at birth then at 5-6wks photo has given me the same bitch on every litter ive had. so my gut instinct as been proven at that point.with cory he was the biggest pup and he grew into my heart because he was so advanced.
  • Laura Kolbach

hello, a good friend of mine has 3 great danes, they are so funny and sweet dogs. both of my irish girls are big ones but look so little when we are in the company of the danes ;-) you can find some photos of them (GD) in my photoalbum - i have lots of photos though, so it might be a hard task to find them :-) wish you all the best, laura
  • Deborah Christopher

    Hi Laura
I've seen your picture with the 3 great danes, they look lovely. I don't think I've got room for more than 1 though!! :-) Your dogs certainly look to enjoy the water.
    Best wishes, Deborah
  • Sandra Mather

You need to be firm with them as when you pick a puppy which is for show getting them on the table is so important due to getting them in a routine of standing. put a towel underneath and you need someone to take it as its imposs otherwise to do both.stand front then have camera ready put you fingers between rear legs and pull into position use thumb to tickle tail tickle under chin with other hand have you got the picture take it quick. you can tap the hind quarter sometimes while they think whats happ usually its been taken you do have to be quick they dont have a good memory so wont stand long.good luck
  • Sandra Mather

having a splashing time here. i think its the same most of the country.we got soaked but i was able to put willow s new coat on to help. i got it from the county show last week. She hadnt got a coat but the others have.Hers is purple hearts, the rest have plain blue ones.
  • Sandra Mather

yes they love to get caked up in good.Have sorted out some posh names. Did you get any names off the new owners i always ask then start to call them a name so they learn it before they go.
  • Sandra Mather

ive not sorted any names yet.ive a few ideas but thats all.The lady i was expecting this morning came. No name as yet though i do know one name but thats it.The rain has stopped now it was cold before its now a little warmer thankfully.
  • Sandra Mather

i thought you would like to know ive just before our walk found willow in the box with k and the pups very smug in deed
  • Sandra Mather

hi i put the pics on site i told you about in previous note.
  • Deborah Christopher

    Hi
How are your puppies doing? Have you had many enquiries. It is very quiet here!
    Deborah
  • Sandra Mather

hi there, hows your weekend been. ive had a few more inquiries which is pleasing. The got the weekly weigh in and starting to wean them. The are coming along smashing. Have you sorted out a pet name for the ones you are keeping from your litter.
  • Sandra Mather

Evie is nice.ive got erin, ive got so many names from all the puppies im a minefield of names. but irish names suit them i have a irish name book which comes in quite handy.
  • Jennifer Welsh

Hi Deborah, I just have the one english setter, Wallace, he's twelve months old and I love him to peices, as I do my Irish obviously! We actually live in Scotland, right up on the North East coast, though I originally come from Northamptonshire. How about you? What made you go for a great day too?
  • Jennifer Welsh

opps - I meant great dane - doh!
  • Sandra Mather

hi hows it going have the pups gone off safely.you will miss them after theyre all gone if youre anything like me i worry about them none stop.
  • Sandra Mather

hi two homes to go thats not bad. Just enjoy them while it lasts soon they will be gone and its hard to fuss them all at the same time. So nows your chance. mine will come to that stage where who shall i fuss first.I tend to give the smallest the most cuddles it helps them to come on quicker. I also feed them seperate so they dont get pushed out by the bigger ones.
  • Sandra Mather

Thats quite normal . they play rough and can hurt but you just have to bite your tongue when a pup yells then the older dog knows it has hurt the puppy. You have to tell the older dog you hurt the baby eventually they get the message. also limit time together so they used to one and other slowly is another idea. sometimes a full on puppy with a older dog is not what they want but when they get used to one another you wonder what all the fuss has been about. A older dog would never as a rule hurt a puppy intentional it doesnt happen they just dont know how to handle the situation thats all.
  • Sandra Mather

if you want more help you could ring me just let me know im good with advise im a minefield thats what friends say but i think 30 yrs exp with dogs and a lifetime with cats helps.
  • Diane Bain

    Hi Deborah,
White flashes don't bother me, normally you will find as you start to groom your puppy for show a lot of that will disappear and as long as your puppy has a good coat it will blend in. It is difficult to choose as they go through so many changes. I normally choose mine between 6 and 8 weeks and unless something drastic goes wrong ie: bad mouth or entropian I tend to stick to it. Go with your gut instinct as you will have to live with that pup for life.
Have you had anyone to see them? What about your bitches breeder or the stud dog owner, sometimes they can be quite helpful. Perhaps we will meet at a show.
  • Sandra Mather

hi how are the pups. mine are growing in abundance i quickly gave one a weight in check and boy oh meat is working wonders.look forward to meeting you at some shows in the future.
  • Sandra Mather

you can give rusks or porridge. And as for milk i use lactol , ive got some skinners in at present. also i then go onto goats milk and after that 1/2 milk -water and then full milk ..hope this helps.
  • Dee Rance

Hi there Deborah, haven't spoken in a while. Hope all is O.K. with you and yours, the summer is always a busy time even if only in the garden, don't really do garden..........in fact I hate cutting the grass, haven't had to do it in years, I just used to put the boys in the garden (my ponies) and they did a great job, fertilised it at the same time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!hope to hear from you soon Dee and the girls
  • Dee Rance

    Hi there Deborah.
I know where you are coming from, mine go around the garden behind all the plants, I didn't put them in I have just moved here, but I do remember my last litter of setters they went through the garden like a plague of locusts, anything green was demolished. and then promptly brought up, ah don't you love them, but where would we be without them????? Richer with money, but poorer with love. How old are the puppies? and have you got homes for them all yet? I will hopefully be breeding my girl August/September time. Speak soon I hope. Good luck with them. Dee and the girls
  • Dee Rance

Oh that is so sad, there are so many nice people out there that there is someone for all the puppies that are for sale. I am as I said going to let Saffy have puppies at the latter end of the year I hope there will still be people out there for them, we don't have many people up here that want puppies so it is difficult to get them all good homes, so keep you fingers crossed, how many are left?? apart from the one that came back.... good luck with the person who is coming today, hope they are the rite kind of people. Dee and the girls
  • Sandra Mather

hows it going with the pups. i cut claws again last night theyve grown again and can hurt you if you catch them.ive had visitors both this morning and afternoon and im waiting expecting to go again soon for the next visitors. hope you sorted the bfast problem out ok.
  • Dee Rance

Hi there I got left with some boys when I bread my last two bitches. 5girs to 15boys they were from two litters but it is due to the stud dog that you get the sex of the puppies and to the dam that the number of puppies, there's a piece of useless information for you, although you probably knew that.....did the people who were coming have one of the wee girls?? or are they like so many that just don't bother to turn up... hope not. Speak soon Dee and the girls
  • Sandra Mather

just had 3rd couple visit so its been a busy day, ill have visitors tomorrow so another busy day booked.ive not been able to get to the shops yet.ill have to go in tomorrow for a few bits in between it all.ive not stopped for any food i started to do myself bfast and they turned up and on it went., all day.
  • Dee Rance

I am pleased that they took one, its so difficult to get nice people these days.. and I think that animals choose their owners, my daughter was looking for her first horse, and we were in a huge indoor school with about twenty yearlings and one just wouldn't leave us alone, Kellie was looking for a gelding not a mare but she ended up with this young mare. She was a mess skin on bone but you should have seen her when Kellie finally had to sell her on, Marriage and children it was the best thing for Chimeah to go to a new home but it broke everyones harts, she was a real sweetheart.
As for people not turning up, I don't know what people think of when they are doing that..... I have found that when people phone and book a puppy I will take a non-returnable deposit, that always sheds the hoaxers. but it it still difficult getting NICE people, don't you think.....Dee and the girls
  • Sandra Mather

well yesterdays hard work paid off the visitors who came during the week returned to book a dog a piece so thats those 2 sorted. The pups are ok but i think it was a bit much for them they got tired out with showing themselves off.
  • Sandra Mather

ive managed now to fix homes for all br 1. a bitch but ive several who havent seen but have rang who could ring again so we will see over her. i didnt give them supper last night only with all these visitors they had the runs and i didnt want them to be plagued with diahorea for too long. Its a big thing all these visitors when on e is so small. Anyhow start afresh today. K got the pups porridge tub down this morning and ate the last of it dry powder i ask you. she didnt mind one bit. Itry to vet homes and monitor as closely as possible. i ask for pics, phone no, email vet no anything if they cant supply things you ask for theyre dodgey i would say.I try to visit if possible and ive even delievered pups at least then you see before you leave. The other is having cash not cheques. i had a bad customer some years ago now we havent spoke to this day he owed money said hed send it never did.so beware !!
  • Dee Rance

well that is something that they all achieve from time to time, my Akita when she was a puppy ate my sons shoes nice leather new shoes, all I said was they shouldn't have been left on the floor, but off the line then that isn't down to them, hope it wasn't an expensive bra!!!!!!!!I used to have a foal that used to demolish the washing line. and then trample it all in the mud. all the best Dee and the girls
  • Sandra Mather

hi im worn out with the little mites. dont know about you. its not that they need a lot of work when you dont walk them but the weather i think is to blame. cant get them out in any sunshine to investigate and so that means several trips to the shed and back.
If it was just mum and babes i could have them in the kitchen but since our new carpets im not allowed to have the dogs in the lounge to much and thats a long story.Shadow gets to go in at night thats it.
  • Sandra Mather

hi just to let you know they are all spoken for now.I had a couple last night they had had two before so know all about them and they are having her so thats sorted now.
  • Sandra Mather

Yes its great,I bet your are quite big now.did you have a whopper or were yours even sized.
  • Jennifer Welsh

Hi, I've just been looking at your photo's and I thought I'd let you know I think they're great. They all look as if they're full of personality - just how I love my dogs :-)
  • Sandra Mather

not this time with having the pups, if i hadnt id have gone.Ive just had a visit from the guy whos having a pup he brought him a present , which willow though was for her. She took a shine to it. ill have to put it away at nights it might end up getting outside and dirty if she drops it. i took some pics of her holding it so cute.Well done getting your pup fixed up glad all mine are now.
  • Melinda Auld

Hi - thanks for your comment :) That cute little puppy is all grown up now - she's the same bitch in the photos I just added to my collection! Just when I thought she'd turned into a perfect angel, I came home yesterday to find she'd munched her way through a CD!! Little monster. Now I'm just hoping she's not going to end up with any sharp bits stuck where they shouldn't be... Don't you just love em??

    Cheers,
    Melinda
  • Dee Rance

    Hi there Deborah.
What will here pedigree name be?? are you going to show her??
I hope that you will be able to find a home for the wee man soon, have I asked how old they are now?
So many questions, nosey old so-an-so aren't I!!!! Speak soon Dee and the girls
  • Dee Rance

    Hi there Deborah.
Morning Glory, lovely name. Who was the stud dog? yes I know what you mean about not wanting to let them go, especially when you only have a couple left, when there are 8-10 of them you don't mind so much, because there are so many that its a pack and its difficult to cope with them all (they are all hooligans) I don't know if I could change, and get rid of the one that I was going to keep, especially if they were so close, but hey what the hell do I know I havent seen them...As for naming them, when I kept sheep the lambs were all called lamb chop or mint sauce, cruel I know but it is in the way you talk to them and what sought of life you give them. They don't know what you are saying to them. But they deserve for you to give them all the love etc, so do the puppies and loving them all is the only way. And that is hard, to give them to there new owners, again all you can do is to choose the best people for them, I always think that they are on lone to the new people, they will always be YOURSE......its hard. Speak soon Dee and the girls
  • Dee Rance

    Hi there Deborah
Yes I know what J.W. is as you probably know its Junior Warrant, this gives you a stud book number, which qualifies the dog for life for Crufts...you get one point for a win at an open show (there has to be 3 in the class) and you get 3 points for a championship show win (the 3 in the class thing applies there too) you need 25 points in all, sound easy doesn't it!!! not so, you also have to get 3 of those points at an open show, when Jas got hers you had to get 1/2 at open shows and 1/2 at championship shows with the extra made up from one or the other. You have to be very lucky to get your J.W. these days. I hope that isn't to garbled.
speak soon Dee and the girls
  • Nadine Bonjean

Thank you for your comment about my picture!
  • Sandra Mather

  • Sandra Mather

hi want my few days. k has had diahorea but she gorges on so much anything. cory hadnt been brilliant for weeks and as hes not living with me it means thats ok but not.i got him some tree bark as weve had colitis run in our family so thats helping him. now back to these willow ok erin ok. shadow also having a problem not eating but will eat grass not other problem not eating food.anyhow last night he ate his tea at midnight. hes still ok thankfully. this morning collect willow and keely and what a mess keely still not right. omg what a mess again the bed the floor ugh. poor willow a sight for sore eyes puppies mess and sister mess to look at. never mind i clean it up as per usual.so strickly no food for keely today.managed to have pups out yesterday afternoon and the couple who are having one came over as usual to see them again been several times before to take more pics that passed the time away. oh boy ill be glad when theyre gone ill miss them but its hard to treat if you cant segregate them very well.could do with a spot just for keely to get her right. As for cory he has good days and bad ones hes loose then hes not. he saw the vet and was given some kalin paste and some tablets but not helped to much the tree bark as done more. ill solder on anyway.
  • Sandra Mather

yes they trample in it and sit in it its yuk. il do that get some. ive just given her a dia tablet and some plain yogurt bio.so ill keep my hopes up she doesnt have another bout. she was chewing a chew when i got back c had given her it to her like he does but he isnt aware of her being offside.the weather as gone hot here and the people who had keelys brother have just paid a visit to see them not seen then for years so it was nice to see them. oscar was left at home.so we had quite a chat.
