The second picture in black and white is the boys we have kept the boy on the left (Oscar) the boy in the middle is called Orlando and the one on the left (Frank who got his name because he was wearing a blue collar and my daughters boyfriend is a mad Chelsea supporter and my daughter likes Frank Lampard he is the only one who has kept his name that my children named them) now has a lovely home with my parents and their lab.

My teenage daughter is a great photographer so she took the photo's whilst myself and my other 2 children helped sit the pups and try and hold them still. we are crouched behind them hanging on to bottoms and tails, Chloe would then shout duck just before she took the photo and we would then dive under the kitchen table.

We did try and take a photo of all 8 but it was a bit of a disaster so had to do it this way.

Hi everyone Just a quick update on puppies, weaning now is going great as they don't have much choice since mum has been very poorly and had to stay overnight at vets.

We had to take her back again Saturday morning as another gland had swollen up and this time it had erupted which had left an big hole in her mammary gland. Poor love I so can sympathise with the mastitis as when I had my twins oh they were so painful when I was trying to stop breast feeding. Vet said it was a good thing as all the infection would now be able to drain.

Trouble is she still wants to try and feed them so we have to shut her away from the pups she pops in at the end of feeding and she just gives them a little top up. Puppies are growing up very quickly and are mischievous and playful, toes seems to be a favourite, it's great fun watching them running around my kitchen.

Thought I would add some pictures so everyone can see how they are growing.

Well a very eventful week really.

Started weaning on Monday and it went really well. Shame it didn't stay that way !!

I have fussy puppies well what did I expect as mum is a fussy so and so with food.

Wednesday I had a lovely lady and gentleman come to look at pups as interested in a girl. All was going well and they stayed an hour or so. Bronte fed her pups and then took herself off into the garden. She spent ages out there and wouldn't come in when called.

When she eventually came in, in her own time of course she's a setter. she had a glazed look about her, feed her and she didn't want her food. which hasn't been her since she has been pregnant.

She then went up to lay on my bed but was struggling to lay down I shooed her back down stair and prompting got of the bed and then peed on my rug. I then knew something wasn't right as she hadn't done that since she was a puppy. Felt her teats and one was extremely hard and swollen, Rang the vet and they told me to bring her down before afternoon surgery. Well that was an hour away and i have never seen an animal go down so quickly as she could hardly stand up by the time we got there,

Vet took her temperature and said she had a temperature on top of a temperature bless her and wanted to keep her in and put her on a drip and antibiotics. drip so they could flush out as much of the bacteria which now had entered her blood stream. It was horrible leaving her.

Now the fun started as pups now had to rely on me to feed them. That was going to be fun ??

Oh how they cried for mum looking for her and at first when feed them it was like a comedy show puppies everywhere.

Eventually found it was easier to get the large flat feeding bowl and putting puppy formula milk in this rather than individually. Weaning them on to a porridge like puppy food was like I had given then poison ! !

Very late night Wednesday and an early morning Thursday. Good news from vets Bronte responding very well and if continues then she will come home late on Thursday. Oh it was like a different job when she came out what a relief.

She got home and immediately fed pups but then later when they were due a feed she refused to feed them I had to feed the formula and the porridge like puppy food, They too it no worries I didn't feed the individually as had been doing that and it was working, so put it in a big flat feeding bowl and let them at it, fantastic results didn't eat it all but they had just had milk.

Still a little concern for Bronte this morning as she is back panting a lot and teat still hard and swollen and very painful to touch.

Does anyone have any ideas about releasing this milk in this swollen teat. Is warm/hot compress the best. Any help would be appreciated.

I have got more pictures of growing pups and will post them later once I have sorted Bronte.

Last Thursday they were 14 days old and only a few of them had opened their eyes and not properly either. In the last 2 days they have made giant steps.

All have opened their eyes now, no more crawling they are all standing up and walking, they were a bit wobbly at first. This this morning Chunk who is the biggest boy tried to run but it didn't come to much as he tripped over his feet and headbutt the vet bed, good job he had a soft landing.

Today we have playful puppies could sit and watch them for ages as they are funny to watch as they are still so awkward and fall over every now and again and they have started interacting with each other and wanting to play, some more than others.

Chunk rolls over and loves his tummy being rubbed, Talullah she loves her ears being stroked just like her mum.

Bronte is still feeding them well but doesn't stay with them after they have feed but doesn't go far.
I also want to take this opportunity to clear up some details on my advert and the health information I have put on there as some one has questioned my integrity !!

All health checks are accurate and up to date. If anyone is interested in a puppy then copies of all necessary health checks are available.

As the rcd 1 DNA test has only been done recently I can only assume that KC are yet to update their records for my girl Cordarragh Orange Blossom.

I hope this puts everybodies mind at rest and please don't hesitate and ask if you require anymore information.
Day 12tag:irishsetters.ning.com,2012-09-17:865021:BlogPost:9894732012-09-17T23:49:00.000ZPippa Wheaterhttps://irishsetters.ning.com/profile/PippaWheater

Yesterday Bronte was giving us a little cause for concern as she had taken up digging holes and nesting again, Only wanting to stay with pups if they needed feeding, leaving them when they were asleep.

She dug a massive hole in the green house which had only just been filled in just before puppies were born. she climbed in my sons wardrobe and dug up all the clothes he had thrown in the bottom, like teenage boys do.

Had along look at where the whelping box was in my large dining room my other half thought it would be better as it was out of the way and quiet as we only use that room when the all the family descend on us.

The whelping box my husband made is the huge 6ft by 5ft he really did a fabulous job on it. So we now have moved her upstairs in my husband study under the eaves with a curtain around it to make it feel more like a nest. Today she seems a lot happier, she still likes a little wander when pups are asleep but no digging.

Already starting to see little characters who are more chilled, the one who whinges for food, the thug, the greedy guts.

So the next milestone is eyes opening and then ears, I'll be taking some more photos so everyone can see how much they have grown.

I had a few interested potential owners penciled in to ring back when pups were born and now they have changed their minds, so 3 girls and 2 boys for sale if anybody is interested or know of anyone who wants an adorable Irish setter.

Both parents come from a good pedigree backgrounds so are both have pet or show potential.

Its that old wives tale a watched pot never boils !!

Monday came and went

Tuesday came and went

Wednesday she spent the whole day attached to me shivering now and panting like mad. Everywhere I went she did too, hasn't wanted anything to do with her mum (me) for the last 9 weeks, so I knew that whelping was imminent, waiting for these puppies has been like waiting for Christmas when you were a kid.

At 2am early hours of Thursday morning she wanted to go out, so grabbed the torch and followed her round our garden which was not pleasant as it was chuffing freezing.

Finally got her to come in, she then jumped all over the sofa and leaked everywhere so I put her inn her whelping box and went into the kitchen to make a cuppa thinking it was going to be ages as she hadn't even been making any signs of contractions. My daughter shouted rushed in to find a brown slimy blob on the floor of her box. No cord no placenta and one very floppy pup mouth cleared, placed in a warm towel and tried to revive it, Bronte is not happy and is trying to get hold of it she licked it a few times, we then had to remove it as she then tried to eat it.

Hoping that the next one wouldn't be far behind we got organised. 2 1/2 and still no puppy and a husband panicking, He rings the vet for some advice explaining what had gone on, wanted us then to take her down to the surgery. 10 minutes later she lies down and lifts her tail and another pup on the way. Hoping that this one was ok and stillborn like the first. Gloves on ready in case we had to help

out, I had to help break the sac as she was too intent with breaking the cord. A boy and a big boy as well my daughter called him chunk.

30 minutes or so later another pup didn't even notice as we saw no abdominal contractions, a girl.

This is the pattern that went on until 10.35.

8 beautiful puppies, 3 boys and 5 girls I've never seen my husband so stressed, he said that he would rather go back to Afgan ??

Well for the first days we have stayed with her 24/7 so haven't had much sleep.

Kids have named the all as they didn't want to cal them puppy with the blue ribbon and so on.

Mum and pups doing really well had their first check up at the vets Monday and all's well. Now to register them with the KC but in here lies the problem what do we call them especially seeing as there's only a certain number of letters you can have?? Wish me luck as that's my task for tomorrow.

Poor thing she's cream crackered !!!

Look out for updates as they all grow up.
