Dear Michelle,
what a lovely photo of Fergus. I know how you must feel today. Losing a dog is very sad. My dear Tosca passed away 7 years ago. She has never been out of my heart.
Anne, I'm so sorry to hear Kate's story. I agree with you, I'm sure that they are saying goodbye in their own way. When I brought Fergus home for the last time, he just wanted to lick the end of my nose and nibble my shoulder..this was him being extrememly affectioante and he reserved it for those he loved best. He couldn't get close enough tp me, stayed as close as he could and I'm sure he was saying his goodbyes as it was only hours later that he died.
My first setter, Oliver, had been very ill and was at the vets, but came home and seemed to be much better, greeting everyone and making sure that he checked out every inch of the garden. We said at the time he looked as if he wanted to make sure he remembered everything. He died later that night, so I am sure he was also saying goodbye.

When I lost Flynn in 2006, he turned to look at me and then collapsed and died at my feet. Again, I felt that he was saying goodbye. I'm sure that they have a sixth sense about these things, far more than we do. I'm so sorry to hear about Kate, it's never easy losing these red dogs, they have a habit of working their way right into your heart, they have such personality and character and give so much love. May is not a good month for me as I also lost my first setter on May 21st, it was a long time ago in 1992, but I can still remember every bit of that last day quite clearly.

Certainly, I don't mind anyone knowing how my dogs died. He had Central Canine Vestibular Disease caused by a tumour on the Brain Stem. It was very sudden and we had no warning that this was there, but even if we had there wouldn't have been anything we could have done. If you go to my site and find his page 'Twoacres Fergus' you will be able to read about it.
