Exclusively Setters

Home for Irish Setter Lovers Around the World

Most of all I can't complain, because I am blessed with two wonderful setters who have a rabbit proof recall, wich I believe says a lot! They are wonderful and better behaved than 90% of the dogs I know, and I can take them pretty much any place without problems. They are also aware of what "do not under any circunstances ever dream of doing that again in your life" means and obey it.

However, every now and then one of them does something so reckless and insane, that I find myself thinking "that's it, she's going to get herself killed now". They do it with this very natural look, like "that" is something as normal as eating or sleeping.

Today there was a big storm, with lots of rain and cold wind. Naturally, being setters, my girls insisted on going out for a walk, so while everyone else was tcuked under a blanket inside, I was out in the fields with two crazy reds wearing waterproof jackets. And what did Romã decide to do????

She looked at me for a second with "that look" and jumped into a river, filled up by the rain and with a very strong flow, with her jacket still on. I figured she was going to drown because of the flow and the weight of the jacket!!!!!
Miss Romã enjoyed her swim very much, went up and down the river with no trouble and came out when she decided it was enough. I watched this speechless, as generaly happens when they go fully insane on me, looked at her and told her my ususal "do not under any circunstances ever dream of doing that again in your life, because if you don't get killed, I'll kill you after" and then carried on with our walk... I have some more simillar stories, but honeslty, after the "NEVER AGAIN, DOG" speech, I do my best to repress the memory of whatever happened!

Please tell my I'm not the only one with a couple of pathologically insane setters at home!!!!

You're not!!

One of mine ,some years ago,did the same as Romã only she was carried away by the river.I ran along the bank trying to think of a way to get her out.Eventually she  reached a place where the river was bridged. There were vertical stone walls down into the water, she ,somehow, got to the 'wall' and climbed up it,with me flat on the ground trying to reach her.Terrifying! The next time we went out she was about to jump in again! She didn't!

:-D    try a red and white  :-D

You are not alone!!!! I KNOW what  "that look" means! Usually they also rise a bit one of the lips , then look at you, look at the object of desire (river, etc..) and then jump into insanity (aka, "that great idea I had, right now!"), right???

That's why I love the Irish setter, never a dull moment :))

And there's mud wallow diving! "No! No!" I yell as I watch him run ,jump, extend all four legs and land in a belly flop in the mud....lovely!

I'm very fasmiliar with that move! Pitanga eventually grew out of it, but Romã just keeps improving her technique: she's now able to get her head in the mud as well. And why is this a problem? because she's also an expert on drying her head in people's pants(specially white pants!!) Right now people run faster from her, in rainy days, than they would from an angry bull!

IS are so amazingly athletic. My first could jump over a 4foot cow fence from a standstill. He once jumped off the side of a 35-40 ft waterfall when he couldnt figure how to get down. I thought " this is it" but he came running saying " can we go now ".

This afternoon I am enjoying a peaceful walk with my 2 IS girls in the middle of nowhere when Luca came trotting back to me with a live ferret in her mouth!!!!  End of peaceful walk and the ferrit is now resident in a box in the garage and hopefully the RSPCA will take it tomorrow because it is obviously tame.  What the heck do ferrets eat, I'm going to have to google this.  The thing about walking setters is that it is never boring!

Normal for a setter Susan! William once caught a seagull. The noise(from the gull) was horrendous. To my surprise he dropped it when I told him to...with a sweet innocent expression ,of course! (The bird was unharmed)

I should say, I absolutely love this blog, he he   :)

One day I was on the beach with Tartuffe, when he decided to disappear into the rocks. He started barking, which he only did for an alarm. When I went over he was standing in front of a young guillemot, that must have been separated from his family in a bad storm the previous night. I thought he might attack the bird, but when I told him to sit and stay, he lay down and guarded the bird, while I went back to the car for a cardboard box. He watched the bird, that looks a bit like a penguin, until I returned and they were both sitting peacefully together. We took the bird to the vet and it was released a couple of days later.

The surprises are never over with them. Yesterday was a rainy day, so both girls refused to go out (why? I wonder....).

Since yesterday they did not want to get wet, today, naturaly, they galloped in a recently plowed field, after a rainy week, wich is pretty much the same as runing over 20 cm of wet clay. I was amazed how they were able to run so easily while getting mud up to their chests. But obviously, being sooooooooo mudy, today Romã did not want to go inside the river - cleaning her is entirely my job! =)
