Metomide injection allergic reaction
Has anyone else had their Irish Setter react to a injection of Metomide (TM). Symptoms. Accelerated heart rate and respiration. Very unsettled towards panic.

No I have to say I have never come into contact with this...do tell more...so we can be on the lookout for it....what was the injection for....(ignorant...thats me) don't know the name of the injection but probably have come across it though...luckely never had a bad reaction to any injections...(only Rabies, my little Lana was really sick after having it)....

It was given to Murphy a few months ago as a anit-emetic to stop his vomiting. The active ingredient is Metoclopramide hydrochloride . He had vomited several times during the night and was very ill looking the next morning so I took him to our vet. Not our normal vet that morning and she gave him this injection. A short time after at home he was panting very heavily, his pulse was racing but worst of all he was frantic. Trying to dig under the house and we are on a slab. Jumping up and pawing very badly. He looked terrified. Our vet was now closed ( Sat). Rang a breeder friend and we agreed he needed to go to the Melb Uni Vet Hospital. Ended being two visits for the day, the second to make sure it was not an over dose. Apparently not a common side effect according to the Melb Uni vets. The second vet explained Murphy was having the symptoms of a panic attack that had been chemically induced as he was allergic to it. He had to tough it out. Lasted for 12 hours.
Just curious to see if any other Irish has had this effect. It was much easier to cope with once we knew what it was and could try to comfort him.
I hope the answer will be no as it was dreadful experience for him and me. Unfortunately the first vet did not warn me there might be a side effect. Now on his vet record in large print.

He was a very exhausted boy for a few days. A lot more questions about anything that goes in to him from now on.

I try not to have injections....(well for me and the dogs)...I have had anti emetic injections before for most of my kids, and never had that kind of problem with any injection that has been given to them. Apart from the first Rabies, don't know if there has been any reacting since...
It must have been dreadful for you all...at least now you are for warned that he may well have a reaction to medication..
I sometimes try and give homeopathic medication, instead chemicals. There are usually side affects with the chemical kind...

Our usual vet talks through things a lot more and is very down to earth. I need to make sure that I ask more questions of why is it needed, side effects and alternatives. It seems the Melb Uni Vet is right it is not very common, thank goodness. They had not seen it before.
Lucky Murphy something rare but easily fixed. He is back to his old cast iron self.
