Hello!
I wanted to ask for some advice and although I'm not sure if this topic is the best place, I didn't want to start a new one, so I hope this will do :)
At the moment I have Canon 400D camera, kit lense (18-55mm) and a 50mm f/1.8 lense. For some time I was wanting to get a zoom lense and maybe this year I will finally do it, but can't decide what to choose! I have tried and liked 17-85mm f/4-5.6 lense, but it feels like it is not much of an upgrade. On the other hand, I'm a bit scared of "dragging" around 70-200 f/4 L lense - those who have tried it, is it comfortable enough or do you get tired after some time from its weight? :) Maybe there is another alternative, that would give pleasant results while photographing dogs, with fast autofocus and nice sharpness?
A 70-200mm zoom is certainly a good range and for dog photography only recommendable!! The fix f/4 is also very good and preferable (for manual setting) to a zoom f/4-5.6. As for weight the Canon 70-200 f/4 is only 710gramm!! And the price is nice too :-)). We have the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 and it weights 1.5 kilos - stil easy handholdable - get used to holding the lens with your left hand and the camera with the right. A setter on the leash from time to time will train you muscles :-)). I don't know how fast and how sharp the Canon lens it is though - maybe just google some reports.
I agree with Cornelia. I have especialy for dog shoting Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 and I think it is even better then 70-200mm f/2.8. Because the distance between you and dog can be greater. And if you have enough light (sunny day) it is better. And also lighter. With this lens you can hike all day with no problems. The only diference is that you do not have f smaller then 5.6 or 4.5. But you can replace this in PS with bluring backround if you want. So the price and weight speaks for 70-300mm. It is true that 70-200 is better lens but you pay this with price and weight and distance. And get only better bokehin good light.
Regards!
