Jarno, these basalt columns formed through accelerated cooling of lava causing rapid crystallisation as it hit the waters of the ocean a few years ago ... well, around 65 million years ago! There are supposed to be around 40,000 of these, mostly hexagonal, basalt columns in the area ..

it really is a very interesting place to visit ... tourists have been coming here since the mid 19th century ... the first railway powered by hydro-electricity was here ... a ship from the Spanish Armada foundered here ... there's a 200m long cave in the next headland that you can enter from the next bay (Portcoon) ... and the scenery is very beautiful too ...
