Cookies were for work...( I wouldn't turn on an oven if we were as hot as you all either!).flowers just out in front as I doubt they would survive our romping Molly!  We are lucky as I do have some Knockout roses around the patio....used to have a lot of tea roses but they need so much care...and chemicals for the pests ( plus I have the scar from a brown recluse spider bite I got while weeding them) so we gave them up this past year....put in canna lillies so am waiting to see how they do this year.  I keep the backyard rather simple due to not wanting to ever endanger Molly with chemical sprays...plus she is nosey!  Have tall grasses on one side that are thick and she will walk right thru middle of them trailing the rabbits...they are almost indestructible so have worked well for us. When she is out in front she it too busy birding and showing off to the neighbors to mess with the plants so far.

Does Molly anticipate storms?  I swear Shilo knew an hour before they arrived as he would dog my footsteps or wake me up at night.  I tried to be just matter of fact and calm with him to no avail so I found that noise from a radio or tv helped some except for the big booms....got worse as he got older so that's when just holding him seemed to work best.  He was quite an armful as he was show stock and 79 lbs but not overweight...just a big love bug .  He was definitely my boy big time. Amazed me that Pebbles the Brittany who I watched when my Dad was visiting or out of town came in and just became King of the Castle...and when he came to live with us for good Shilo just let him be the boss.  I found with all my males they would be submissive to other male dogs.  Still trying to figure out Molly though.

Hope your Molly stays calm thru any future storms.  Our backyard is rather a mine field in the very back where Molly collapses the mole tunnels so they go back under the fence....and in spots muddy from her racetrack birding....she has a starting spot she always stands in and then races the same path so we  will be trying to put some plugs of zoysia grass in there ( I hate zoysia but am thinking is the only thing that stands a chance on her racetrack).  We have heavy clay soil so it retains water when we get a rain and then we play the "you want to wipe my feet game"  ,,,,she will try to sneak past us after the front paws are done. Thinking someone needs to invent a dog paw bidet for them.

Hi Eunice! Thank you for your kind comment. On my Photos and Videos you see my Girl - her name is Tiny (except one Photo that shows my Boy - Billy - I lost him with bowel cancer). Your Photos from Molly are great. Wish you a nice day. Barbara

Had a look at the www and alleged raw cabbage is for dogs indigestible and in larger quantity light baneful. They can become flatulence and in succession bloat. All the best Barbara

Hi Eunice, I think a small bulk of raw cabbage and not every day (or boiled) is no problem for your Molly. Carrots and green squash is raw OK (I give it puréed but mostly Tiny eats very short boiled veg.) Take care Barbara

Hi Eunice,

Sorry have not got back to you sooner...have been helping out at one of the other stores while they are minus a manager...will be working 6 straight next week between the two so will be worn out before they get someone back from sick leave.  and Molly is letting me know she is not happy I am gone so much...even though she has Alan here with her it is a change of her routine.

I think we always want what we don't have as far as yards...I have a hill in very back and wish we were flat!!!  Makes for too much mud down by the house when we get lots of rain and you can figure out how messy that can be with Molly!

What did you call your other Irish Setters?  Our first IS we named Shilo...after the Neil Diamond song..and it was so funny as neighbors and especially my family (Dad) always called our later setters the same name...I would name them something else...Shamrock , Shannon and all but my Shannon ended up being another Shilo as that is what everyone else called them. Finally broke the Shilo with having a female this time though I wonder if my Dad was still with us if she would not have ended up being a Shilo also.  Have been trying to catch up on here so will read forum in a second.  Hope you all are doing alright and your rains have not been too bad.

Oh dear...hope your little grandson is soon better and they figure out what that lump might be...and that it is nothing serious.  Helpless feeling with a little one that young sick. Is he in the hospital or at home?   Will keep him in my thoughts and prayers and please, let me know how he is doing and what he has.  Hugs!  How many grandchildren do you have?

What sort of work do you do?  I work as sales lead part time for a ladies store here..upscale mall with banker hours...we close at 7pm so even on nights I close there I am home by 8:15 pm.  As I fill in for management I end up sometimes helping out one of the other four stores when they have things come up....fun to meet the other ladies working there but they don't close til 9:30 pm so afraid I am not used to working that late.  Hopefully next week will be last week this store needs me to help out.  Poor Molly just is not used to my being gone over 10 hours so I come home tired and she is just ready for me to play all night with her!  Fell asleep on sofa last night and woke to find her sleeping on top of me. :) I never feel her get up there but she will do that if I am gone too long.  I do the training here but have found Alan to be her "man"  ...she stalks him and adores him.  I think it is the male/female thing with her as all the males were definitely my dogs!  She has us each pigeonholed as to what we each do for her it seems.....works the system to her advantage to never miss anything she loves  or wants.  Rather like kids used to try to do when they played one parent against the other!  I do have final say on things concerning Molly though so trying to keep her from becoming a tyrant here!

Love the names of your other Irish Setters....and a spoodle is a mix of poodle and ?  know there are some darling mixes..have seen some golden doodles that were just beautiful but also some that didn't turn out looking golden or even poodley here. Wonder what an Irishdoodle would look like?

How is the little grandbaby doing?  I hope when you are ready that your new work venture works out for you and that Molly can go along also.  Reason I have been trying to wean Molly off her gentle leader is so we can take some pet therapy classes as I would love to volunteer at a assisted care facility right by our home with her.  Will see how it goes.  Usually work 12 to 18 hours a week which gives me a little space from Alan...and him time to ride his bike or spoil Molly with their wild side walks. Glad your weather is cooling off a bit....looking forward to weekend here as we will really be above freezing...high  I believe of 42 on Saturday which will be really nice after all the frigid weather here..will melt some of the snow so here comes the muddy paws but like that better than freezing and more snow!

Hi....how is the little one today?  Hope fever has gone away and on road to complete recovery.

Long day here and when I got home I paid for it ....three hours of fetch, let's do tricks and cuddling from Miss Molly....she is cuddled up on my foot as I type this...just is not used to my being gone that long...least I know someone really missed me.:).  Alan said she actually started to act like our boys did when I was gone....lying in chair closes to door and looking out the window for my car....think she wants both of us home dancing attendence on her!  Off tomorrow and Sunday before I do at least 6 days straight and then I am pretty sure I will be back to just my own store.

How is Molly doing with her thinking about that swimming pool?  thought maybe she might be tempted looking at her toys floating in there.  Hope you are doing alright .

I must be exhausted to not feel a 62 lb IS sleeping on my chest and stomach...Alan says it happens all the time....others would sneak up and curl up behind my knees or on my feet but she carries it to the extreme of togetherness!

Let me know how your little grandson is....just hate it when little innocent babies are sick...scarey and no way they can tell you what hurts.

lost connection here ...but remember that Molly at 14 months was only 48 lbs....62 is where she is at almost 3years old,,,and this appears to be her ideal weight

Eunice...I am so glad you all were home when she got that bone stuck in her mouth!  Be careful when you leave door open for her when you are not around also. They can also get a bone ( or stick) wedged across the upper roof of the mouth if they break a part of it off.  That is part of the reason Molly gets only sterilized bones here...shape is long and she can not ingest any of it unlike rawhide.  I do fill the center section for her and she will spend a half hour or so licking the filling out....in summer I freeze the bone with the filling for her. So your Molly also buries bones!  Ours buries hers in the house..under blankets, pillows , in laundry baskets.....best one was a milk bone she put into my suitcase when we were on vacation last year!  She gets a small milkbone from the bank when she is in the car with us...and immediately will hide it under the the front seat of the car...and leave it there.  Cracks the ladies at our bank up as most dogs gobble them down.  We have found when walking her that she usually will not take a treat from a stranger...mail lady carries milk bones for dogs she meets....she has to give the bone to me and then Molly will take it but usually tries to hide it somewhere.......think when she is walking she is focused simply on her walking and to heck with snacking! I do use another type of dry kibble here for training treats which she loves so she will take those from me while walking but not treats from others it seems.

Eunice that is about the same weight our Molly was at that age .....:)  I have her now about where I want her to be weight wise....lean but not skinny...nice girly figure!  She will lose a wee bit of weight in spring /summer I think as my males always did as they are more active when weather is so nice here.  I keep an eye on her as I know spayed females can easily gain too much weight. Our Brittany had thyroid disease and Cushings so we fought weight with him the whole time he lived with us...and it is so hard on them so easier to stop it before they gain it is my feeling ( too bad I am not that good about that matter for myself!)

Hi Eunice,

I will try and get some photos today if my neighbor is able to come and help. My camera has died so I will ask her to bring her's.

Cheers,

Carmel

Sterilized bones are about 6 inches long, and perhaps 2 inches in width but are round and hollow in the middle....I fill middle with peanut butter (not one with lots of fillers) or you can also get cans of fillings at the pet store where I buy the bones.  You can find them prefilled with liver, peanut butter or cheese flavors here ....they are not as messy for Molly when they are new so that is why I freeze the ones I refill here at home. Bone is hard and white and so far she will chew on it a wee bit but mostly it is the filling she is after here.  Have never had one broken here...when edges chip from dropping I discard and replace .

Milk bone is a doggie bone shaped treat you can buy by the box here ( Purina) but we usually buy treats from where we get her dog food ..as they make them there and use organic things and no wheat products  in theirs ...we just call them all milk bones though.  The ones the bank and mail lady offer to her or the ones from Purina that come in box you can buy at the grocery or box stores here.

Exactly on the bank...they have a drive thru so we go to the one by the window....little ones they used to give lollipops to and dogs always get a milk bone.  She loves to go with us..but hides those bones to retrieve on a later trip in the car for some reason!  Her not accepting treats from others is just something we have noticed about her....she wants it from Alan or I....we did not train her that way it just is the way she does things. Today I was picking up Angie from college and needed to run a few errands so took Molly with us as she seemed to have a wee touch of cabin fever ....we took turns running in to do the errands as I never leave her alone in the car ( or in the yard). Poor Molly I think thought she was going to get to walk in the park but walks are all ice encrusted still so was not even an option.  She got to run around a wee bit before and after the car trip in the front yard which she loves to do so just a change of scenery for her here today. Snow is just a big frozen ice pile here...warming up over the weekend will start the melting process but fear it will keep refreezing overnight .

Eunice you can also go inside our banks...but only service dogs go into most of our buildings here.  They just offer the option of drive thru which I use for anything that is basically a drop off here.  I do take Molly with us in nice weather to a shopping area we like to walk around...was amazed when one shop invited her to come in last year....material and home decor store....we did not take her in as did not want to risk her knocking something off with her wagging tail.  We take turns much as you do going into shops and Molly really attracts a lot of attention there also.  There is a Farmer's Market where she can walk thru with us while we purchase fresh produce....and then Molly does lunch with us!  Couple of different places to eat...soups, sandwiches , quiche etc with picnic tables right there ....she lies under the picnic table and usually gets a milk bone or training treats and some of the water I carry for her.  More and more places here have sidewalk tables in nice weather and welcome dogs in those areas.

Does Molly chase that guenia pig?  I know my Molly would!

Hope you enjoy your evening out....we do leave Molly some to go out....run of the house but inside only even with the fenced backyard.  She has not had an accident in the house since we first brought her home .  She can and does hold it til we come back ...mostly sleeps in chair by the door so she can see when our car comes up the driveway it seems....she greets us with a toy in her mouth so we will fuss over her and play with her a few minutes when we come in.  She is always carrying a soft toy around it seems. We toss soft toys inside the house as tennis balls in the air can cause damage to breakables if we are playing retrieve with her.

Hope someone claims the guinea pig before Molly does!  Am glad things are better for your grandson.  I never took our male dogs out to lunch but love taking Molly...probably did not take the boys as my girls were along so too much to manage ...also think places are a little more open now to where you may take dogs along.

Just our two daughters...oldest married with three little boys ( 7 year old and twins who just turned 2) and our youngest who is still at home but in second year of college.  How many children do you have? I do think these Irish Setters keep us young...constant playing and laughing at their antics!
