Home for Irish Setter Lovers Around the World
My beautiful girl, Abbie Rose, had bloodwork last May and it showed that everything was working perfectly. That was before she ever had Comfortis, too. Last December, I found a couple fleas on my 2 dogs (2nd dog is a schnauzer mix) so I gave them the flea pill Comfortis for the second time. Frontline and Advantage both made Abbie sick when I used them and the vet said that Comfortis should work for her. Around the first of January, Abbie was in the floor by us and she urinated all over herself. I took her to the vet the next morning and they did some blood work and took a urine sample. She had blood in her urine so they gave her an antibiotic. The most shocking thing was that her liver enzymes (ALT) were sky high. They were close to 650. They put her on SAMe for her liver which she is still taking along with milk thistle. We did a repeat blood test a few weeks later and they were over 900. After another round of antibiotics, we did another blood test and the ALT levels were down but another one was high. I forget the initials for that one. I am concerned that the Comfortis may have done something to her liver.
We did the bile acid a week or so later. It showed that her liver was not functioning as well as it was supposed to be. I don't think that my vet is up on all of this. He was talking about sending Abbie to a special veterinary hospital in Nashville, TN to have a biopsy of her liver done. I was told by an Irish Setter owner not to let them do a biopsy because it could kill her. I sent a message to Dr. Jean Dodd from Hemopet and she sent me a liver cleansing diet.
Abbie looks and acts like a normal 2 year old. She acted like she didn't feel good when she had the infection but not since she finished her antibiotics. I only feed her Blue Buffalo dog food. She has never been fed table food, junk food and anything made by Purina or China.
Anyway, an emergency vet that we took our smaller dog to told me that it sounded like Abbie had a congenital liver issue. The liver has trouble storing and processing food which was what showed up with the bile acid test. I have searched everywhere trying to find something out about this but keep coming up empty handed. Has anyone ever heard of this or have any idea where I can find more information? He told me to look it up on here but all I ever find is dealing with the shunt and that is not what she has. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
