Sire and Dam details in Litter Advertisements

A interesting new trend in advertisements on Dogs on line pure breed website. Litters of Irish being advertised with no mention of the Dam or Sire. Ads talk of proven show lines, bloodlines that have proven to be successful around the globe, features some of Australiasias top bloodlines, all Uk and european lines etc.

No names of the Dam and Sire.

Contact with the breeders has to be made before you can find out.

I find this strange as I would want to know more about the health and background of the pups up front. What do you think

Sue H I am sorry but I am not responding to any questions from you that are not directed at the post. I would like to think that the personal comments and questions are finished. I hope you understand.

I have only read this far on this topic but feel extremely annoyed with this comment about "pet owners". Pet owners can know more about the bloodlines than registered breeders. I am certain I am not the only pet owner who has knowledge of English Setter bloodlines not only in Australia, in other countries around the world, and who feels that the bloodlines are an important consideration when purchasing a purebred puppy.

I have copied and pasted my original comment. Eva, what is there in this statement that is derogatory about pet owners. The answer is Nothing!

Susan......I am only commenting from my experience. Please read all my subsequent comments. The majority of pet owners who I have sold puppies to have done very little research on health issues apart from asking if the parents are hip scored. They want a companion dog who will fill the criterion of becoming a much loved family pet. I have been through all this with Rhonda. I  don't regard 'pet owner' as a derogatory term nor am I being arrogant about it. You are crediting me with sentiments I do not have. Just because I breed and show dogs doesn't set me up higher than everyone else so why put me there? I do not know what else to say except that I have made many close friends among the people who I have sold my puppies to and who have kept in touch so I know them personally and know what they want in a dog. A few are on their third Irish from me.  Because you research bloodlines doesn't mean everyone else does. You cannot set yourself as a benchmark for a typical dog owner. Breeders research bloodlines because they need to in order to ensure health and good temperament but that is a different thing.
Also Susan every breeder gets stacks of enquiries from people who barely know what an Irish Setter looks like. Who ask if that is the same as a Red Setter. Who just ask the price and ring off. Who don't ask any questions at all but say they want one. How would you describe these people? What term would you use? Why so angry Susan......I meant no disrespect.

I have an example for you of my neighbour who bought a Border Collie from a breeder having checked locally so he didn't need to go too far.  As he had owned a Border Collie before he did no health checks and no research. I know this because I helped him in his search.

The breeder had two litters, one which was to be KC registered and one which wasn't.  Both litters were well reared, healthy, fat and friendly and all the parents could be viewed so no problems there. The registered pups were £250 more expensive so my neighbour asked why the price difference and was told that the breeder was catering for all markets. For those who wanted a registered pet and those who weren't bothered.  My neighbour wasn't bothered so he bought an unregistered bitch at the cheaper price.  She is just over a year old and absolutely adorable.  Brilliant with children, lovely with my dogs and cuddly as hell.  Hopefully my neighbour will have many happy healthy years with her.

There are thousands of dog owners (dare I call them pet owners) who are just like my neighbour.

I agree Susan Nothing.

I don't think any breeder would confuse show results or success with a prerequisite for a good sire or dam.  We have all seen many examples of a less glamourous sister producing better progeny.  However the pedigree and all it's associated issues of health and temperament etc will still be the same so does it absolutely matter for the parents to be on the advert.......still cannot see it myself

If a dog affected with rcd-4 was put to a clear dog to clear the line would the names of the sire and dam be on the advert for the pups.

It would be treated the same way as any other advert so, no, as I don't personally think adding the parents names is necessary. Buyers would, of course, be made aware that the puppies would all be carriers. That would form part of the breedet/buyer discussion about health checks etc.

Sue looking at your previous comments to the post I thought you did get the question. I am aware that Irish Setters have a problem with PRA rcd-4. Some breeders here have tested for it too, but you would know that from when you looked at the dogs on line adverts. Some have included the information on PRA rcd_4 status. Which is great. I am not being provocative. I am asking very open simple questions in response to eva's disscussions.  There is really no need to get personal and start putting labels on me.If it cannot be discussed openly here without name calling what hope does a brand new potential pet owner have. I don't really see that placing of the names of just the sire and the dam into an advert as providing a pedigree.

And as the owner of an affected dog, are you saying I shouldn't show him?

As it happens, he was shown before we knew his status, and we intend to show whenever the mood takes us as we enjoy the whole scene. And it goes without saying he will not be used in breeding as that is my choice, though I have no issue with carefully considered and thought out breeding.

Sue I really find this annoying. I have not made the opening comment of your last disscusion, you did. If you wish to make this comment about your dog and decisions then that is your choice. Your statement has nothing to do with me. I decline the 'offer' to discuss this as it really is off track from my post, but some one else may wish too.
