I ♥ my Irish Red Setter.

For all those, who love their Setters.
  • Michelle Webster

This is DEFINITELY the right place for a group like this! We don't just love our Irish Setters, I often think that we are obsessed with them.
  • Kristina Brannlund Westin

    I love spoiling them:-)
  • Michelle Webster

they are worth it........Perhaps we should call them all L'Oreal, because they really are worth it!!
  • Kristina Brannlund Westin

Ha, ha, ha, that was a good one:-)
    They really are worth spoiling.
And they give so much back to us..Couldn´t live without them;-)
  • Cecilia GUIOT

    Of course, I love them
I can even say I'm a "setter addict". My setters are not only a passion but also a way of life
  • Kristina Brannlund Westin

    Cecilia, you just said it!
A way of life is absolutely a perfect way of saying it;-)
  • Zatu Rimpisalo

Yes, of course love their settrar! It is the best you have, the children then;)
  • Kristina Brannlund Westin

I know exactly what you mean Barbara!

When I talk about my dogs it is like talking about children. Charlie did that and Bruno did this and my twelve year old Viktor did so...
But they are my children so why not;-)
  • lyn hathaway

could not contemplate life without a setter.layla IS OUR LIFE along with lucy and OUR LIVES revolves around THEM.
  • Sandra Mather

The dogs are definatley like children.I agree with Kristina i say my which dog did this so much so that people who dont know me think ive a big family and its the dogs im talking about. They are certainly a have one have more breed...
  • Carol Ann Evanetz

Beautiful Day here in Pennsylvania - I was outside gardening and of course my red heads had to "help". Shane dug some more of the crater in the yard and Kylie who doesn't like to be ignored kept grabbing toys and insisting that I stop gardening and play with her. Faith doesn't see anymore and has leg trouble but she manages to get to the big dig out in the back of the yard and eat some dirt with Shane. Right now all 3 are out back laying on the patio enjoying the early evening coolness. Bed soon tomorrow is a work day. Take care everyone
  • Jo Ottinger

It has been two months that I have had an Irish boy back in my life. It has been very lonely without having an Irish in the family. My grandaughter has been playing and having fun with our new boy Hawk. He has been busy replanting several of the young plants in the yard he thinks he knows were they look better or that they look prettier spred out on the grass. I never knew that the telephone book is to be read all over the yard also. Not one page was left in the book.

The following is from my grandaughter Natasha.

one time he chewed the rosebush.he always digs in the yard.sometimes I wish I had 11 of them.I love him very much. irish setters are very hansome.

How can you be mad when he is so happy with whatever he has been busy doing
  • Kristina Brannlund Westin

Talking about diggin craters in the garden. I have a lots of them;-) Filling one and they are digging deeper next time. Coming to show me their soily nose waving their tails and are sooo proud of them selves. Well what can I do? Just wash their noses and than giving them a big kiss:-)))
  • Jennifer Welsh

Barbara, your last comment about Harry reminded me so much of my beloved Rufus, he had a thing for lavander. Didn't bother with any of the other plants - just the lavander...he used to dig up every lavander plant he came accross and would always bring them to me so proud of himself. I would always end up laughing because when I scowled he looked at me so quizzical he just couldn't understand why I wasn't praising him for all his hard work, I couldn't help but laugh - I still miss him dreadfully.
My current 3 setters love to dig to but they don't seem to fixate on anyting in particular - I'm sure they just dig for the fun of it :-)
  • Sandra Mather

~I had a mess to clean up this morning the poor loves had no doubt had to much sun yesterday. We still love them when they make a mess and cant help it. I used to have diggers and now they cant get on the garden to dig unless we let them.I always said they were trying to get to australia.

Hawk has started chasing flies and bees anyone have any suggestions to help stop this compulsion? He is doing it even in the house.

Had our first obedience class Monday we did well. Have alot to relearn for me not him. He is busy with his kong right now.
  • Jo Ottinger

Maybe he will not like the taste and will stop. Tiz chased bees until she got stung and her nose swelled. Of course it was the day before an agility trial.
  • Carol Ann Evanetz

My Kylie also loves to go after bees, she is so funny - sees one on the clover in the yard, stalks it and then nearly goes on point. I try to get to the "scene" ahead of her and do the bee in but then Ky paws it up from the grass anyhow. Way back my Tracy went after one (80's) and she did get stung, her face really swelled.
  • Sandra Mather

I had a setter once who used to chase the flies. The cats used to look at him as if to say hey thats our job.He ate them also.As for Bees the same dog got stung by a bee and avoided them.
  • Jacky

My Seamus loves to snap at & chase flies, but he never seems to catch any! Reading the other lovely stories below reminded me of my first setter, Shannon. We had free range chickens at home, and they would lay their eggs in the garden. Often you would go out & see Shannon walking around with very puffy cheeks. She was carrying around an egg! Never broke them (that we saw!) just carried them around, you could go up to her & put your hand out & say spit it out & out it would come!! She loved other animals, maybe she was just looking after the eggs??
  • Jo Ottinger

Lovely story Jacky, your Shannon must of been a very sweet girl.
  • Jo Ottinger

Hawk is now 7 months and he has started to follow new girls (dogs) he meets at the park and cleaning them any susgestions on this? Should I be stopping him from doing this or just letting the girls go after him when they get tired of it?
  • Sharyn Latchford

Hi all...this sounds like a fun group to join...where we all love and spoilt our Irish.:-))

I have two beautiful "kids" that I adore.....

    Sharyn, Henna & Finnegan
  • Jo Ottinger

Welcome Sharyn and your two lovelys. I only have one irish but I have to aussies that pretend they are irish.
  • Sharyn Latchford

I am sure the Aussies are just as cute as the Irish......

I have one older girl Henna who has turned 9 and a younger boy who has just turned 2........this is the first time I have had a boy always had girls......& he is such a Mumma's boy......He is related to Jackies Seamus....half brothers I think

    Sharyn
  • Jo Ottinger

Both of my Irish's have been boys and I think boys tend to be mommy boys. Scout was more then Hawk is. Hawk is more busy entertaining himself then Scout was also. My girls Aussies' are 14 and 11 so Hawk makes up games when they will not play or get too bossy with him.
  • Sharyn Latchford

How did you come to get Irish after having Aussies?....be a bit of a difference..

Yeah I have found the girls to be far more bossy then the boys......heheheh always about them

    Sharyn
  • Jo Ottinger

Read the Big Red stories growing up so I always wanted an Irish but did not have the time for one. My first dog as an adult was an Aussie and had four more over the years they are a wonderful breed and very sweet I was lucky and none of mine were hyper they are happy just spending their day with me. When I turned 50 I finally looked into an Irish and after researching breeders in the area I got Scout three years ago. Even though I lost him to illness last year I knew there was no other breed I want in my life at this time. They are so gentle and loving. Not that my Aussies aren't Lady has been my girl since the day she was born (from a litter I breed) I knew she was the one. Tiz was a plain Jane offered to me by a friend and we were partners in agility until three years ago when she retired.

The boys have been so much fun they do not take anything seriously except for birds. Everything has been a game. Even when you are trying to be firm they turn it around. So many times I end up laughing at something when I should be letting them know what they are doing is completly not exceptable.

    Kathie Jo

In my experience both breeds are similar in many was just not in looks.
  • Sharyn Latchford

I think Big Red has a lot to answer to...I also got hooked on Irish after seeing that movie....
I am sorry you lost your Scout, its never easy to loose a much loved friend..But Hawk sounds a sweetie...as do your girls....I do not know anyone with Aussies although have seen some doing obedience and some in the show ring

Hi, I'm Corinna from Germany and I love all my Irish Setters! Five living with me, and about 36 formerly puppies living in their families.
  • JOANNE

Hello I am Jo from New Zealand. I very much love all of my setters, 4 Irish and 2 Gordons. This looks like a fun place to share stories.
  • Jo Ottinger

Hope everyone is doing well. Started bird training and an obedience class last week. Having fun in both Hawk likes the bird training more as he gets to run and smell good things.

Hawk is having a problem with dry skin. He gets fish oil and olive oil daily but he is still has dry skin on his back. Any ideas?
  • Malcolm Bollong Henry

Thanks for whomever started this group...My partner thought these kinds of discussion groups were corny, well, until she needed help with her beloved puppy. This being her first pet, not to mention that he is an irish setter with exclusive requirements and behaviors but she'd be lost without her TRUE love. Thanks- Exclusively.
  • lyn hathaway

everyone tries to help to find a solution when someone has a problem malcolm
  • SARAH J.M. GRAHAM

we all love jasper our 6 year old jasper,he fell off Arthurs Seat in EDINBURGH and 2 operations later and 5,000 pounds he is blessed,he is an expensive but priceless dog!!!
  • Jo Ottinger

They all are priceless are they not. Do not know what I would do without mine. Just spent an hour at the dog park with Hawk. There were several dogs there for him to have fun with. Tiz can not go as she is to bossy and will not let anyone play. It is a small park but everyone there has really nice dogs and they usually all get along well.
  • Caroline

Hi I'm Caroline and I'm addicted too ;)
Now during my influenza Luna IS and Mamba GS curing me...laying with me in bed Luna by my legs, Mamba by my stomach....
  • Jo Ottinger

Hawk is entered in our first field trial this weekend, I hope we do not get lost as it is about 3 hours from home and we are leaving at 3am. I hate driving in the dark. I am sure he will have a wonderful time
  • Alison Ashley-Turner

Hi to anyone who can help....
I need to increase my puppy's weight and am struggling... he is now 13 months. I have just changed him over to royal canin but just doesn't seem to like it - even when had fed... can anyone suggest a quality biscuit that may be more entising? he is eating small amounts of tripe but not as much as i would like... meal times to him now seem to more of a torture than fun so really don't want to force him to eat...
  • Jo Ottinger

    Hi Alison,
I have given my cats royal canin and they did not like it. I just started using taste of the wild for the dogs and they love it. It is expensive compared to Canidae which I was feeding, the older dogs had trouble with gaging and that is why I changed.
  • Tina Clamp

Hi i am Tina, I have one irish setter whose name is Mia. I live on Dartmoor in Devon England. We have just been for a lovely walk in a forest here on Dartmoor and my Darling Irish Mia decided to roll in some foxes muck, so she is smelling lovely. i have given her a bath but i swear i can still smell it. Do any of you have dogs that love to smell like something else, unfortunately i do not like this perfume.

She has plenty of moorland torun about on and she has to roll.

I am hoping to get another Irish next year so i guess i will have twice the washing then.
  • Ilona & Gina

    Hi everyone,

Does anybody else receive funny emails from "Vicky Lake"? I am really fed up with it. It seems to be someone who invaded this forum with advertising (cheep online games etc.). Could the people who run this site possibly follow up on this?

This is a place for setter lovers, not for funny advertisers!

    Thanks, Ilona

  • James Doran

I love my boy Romeo too!.....Guess we're all the same then!!
  • Henry's Mom

I am told constantly that I am obsessed with my setters. Yes I do admit that I am.  But at the same time the accuser totally spoils them too..... I often wonder do owners of other breeds get so obsessed?? Or are we a special type of human/canine combination???? Either way I just could not live with out one.
  • Chantal McIlveen-Wright

Besotted, so are we with our Reds, because they are so very beautiful, angel as well as little devil, rough and tough then cuddling and soft, always happy and wanting to make your happy, etc. etc. so how can I not be totally besotted and love them!!!  the best thing which can happen to someone is to have one - we cannot say own one as they own us  :-)

  • Lois McCullough

Chantal I cannot believe you're another custodian who is besotted - 'said with tongue in cheek'
  • Carol Ann Evanetz

Enjoying these posts even tho many are from last year.  Hope everyone enjoys a wonderful week.  in Pennsylvania  Carol and the fur faces.  PS Happy Easter....
