How many Irish Setters do you have?
Now none, have had 6, bred 6 litters. Have had 4 IRWS
How long have you owned Irish Setters?
Over 30 years
About Me:
Now too old and infirm to keep setters, I work on the genetics and health of IRWS and dogs in general. I have to borrow other peoples' Irish Setters and IRWS for cuddles - there is no room in my heart for any other breed - they are just dogs - setters are special!!!

    Hello Ann,
How did I find you? I enquired a while ago about Irish R&W - a question concerning vWD. Somehow your maild address remained on my address list... and we did meet briefly at the international conference in Belgium.
btw Gene created this list for Irish Red but it seems to be opening up for all setter breeds. A couple of people (Carmen from Switzerland) even own R&W!
I see Ginger has already asked for your opinion - so I'm sure your expertise will be in demand:-))
    Greetings from sunny Switzerland.

Sorry, me again... popular sire syndrome was very briefly mentioned under the theme 'a topic' on page 3 of the forums, maybe you can tell us more?

Hi Ann, was wondering if there was any way of tracing an American bred Irish Setter bitch that was taken to England in 1982? Her owners were an American Air Force Captain and his wife was British. They returned Stateside before the 12 months quarantine was up and left Charm at the quarantine boarding kennel. The wife wanted me to pay for her shipping back to the States which was about $1000 at that time. I didn't co-own the bitch and had already paid for her airfare over to the UK as a baby puppy. I declined, felt that she was their dog and their financial responsibility. She was AKC registered, out of an American sire, was also PRA genetically clear. I'd love to find out if Charm was ever registered with the UK KC and who she ended up living out her life with. Her American registered name was Rustwood's Charm, sire was Briarwood's Future Indeed and her dam was Robalee Jubilee of Rustwood. Charm was very dark mahogany at 4 months of age (last time I saw her before they left for the UK). I have no idea which of the two quarantine kennels she was boarded at but it would be one used mostly by the U.S. Air Force personnel. Is there any way someone could research the Irish Setter registry for me and let me know what ever happened to her? Thanks in advance, would love to hear any news about Charm that you can find.

Great to hear from you.Would love to meet up when you visit NZ again. My husband adores Red and Whites and we hope to own a couple in a few years. It will be a matter of re-introducing them to NZ as there are none being shown over here at all which is a real shame. At least I know where to come now for any much needed advice.Take care and hope to hear from you soon.It is that time of year when I really am home sick and miss the UK (CRUFTS).jO.xxx

Hi Ann, yes will be at Crufts with 3 youngsters, for the 1st time Ellie (Sh Ch Delsanto Eleanor of Jennison) will not be there. She is now 10 years old & unfortunately has just been spayed as had a problem with her ovaries.
The photo of Dusty (Ellies brother) makes me proud to have bred such a lovely boy with that working instinct. Happy hunting Dusty... Not sure what you mean by "staying" in NZ. You aren't leaving us for good are you?
Catch up with the news at Crufts. regards Chris

Dear Ann, I hope you doing fine!
It's al long time ago that i reacted on this totally new way for keeping contact, as it was on the working setter list. What i want to tell is...
But Harry's linés are now sattled in whole Europe.
And I am starting a totally outcrossline this year.Harry wil be the mean Male in this breeding program.
He is still a fine dog on the age of 10 years in a good shape. What you see on the pic is a son of Harry.P.G Harlequin Gerorge. On a clubmatch.
From Goldie x Harry .There are 3 winners in trails in the abroad, Sweden, Italie and Ierland.I keep by a next litter of these 2 a bitch. We have here in Holland also a son of Harry x Craigrua April and a mail from a combination Pallas Green Halloway x Craigrua Dicxie Named Marthy
These are the mean males and a bitch from America ( Also 5 generation out of Harry the start of a new working line .I wil bring back they old Moanruad line into this line. You know I am not the man for shows.
I think there is a markt for good working R/W Setters.
If there are some intrest in these Harry pups in England let me know.

  • Silvia Lindner-Rae

    Hi Ann,
we are not sure yet. We may go to the Eurodog Show in Dublin and visit Ireland, but it is definitely a question of money.... I'd rather spend it on a holiday, as we can only afford one every other year. It is also a question if we go to Crufts next year although Sashi is already qualified.
    Cheers
    Silvia
  • Ann Millington

Just to point out, Silvia - that value for money wise, at the Festival Weekend you will meet IRWS breeders from around the world and learn a lot about IRWS history, different aspects of the breed, important information on semen evaluation and AI, the Gene Pool (its scope and diversity) DNA testing and all that implies. You will socialise at the Grand Gala Dinner in the evening (many surprises here) and on the second day see upward of 100 IRWS competing under an Irish FCI judge plus the historic Parade of Champions. All in all a thorough immersion in the breed and its future. Then on the holiday front, you would be in the centre of England able to enjoy and experience something of the country in whatever direction you take.
Definitely worth saving up for - all the best people will be there!!!! ;o))))
  • Silvia Lindner-Rae

    Ann,
I do know all this, and I do know the center of England - it is Ireland we want to see - and on the way there we are travelling with friends and taking some of their dogs - so we cannot go earlier - it is very complicated, although we would not want to miss the Festival either - it is just the timing is not really too good, but I pointed that out before. But there is still enough time to think this over.... as we say here: es ist noch nicht gegessen! How do you like our Celt? He was JB in his first show!

  • Ann Millington

Hi Silvia - I did post a comment on Celt on the other List, but it was blocked and did not appear. I said Celt looked OK, but at that age - not wonderful, as is only to be expected. You made your post sound as though you had Rescued him, - apparently not, it seems.

The pity is that there does not seem to be any 'competition' in Europe for IRWS they are frequently the only IRWS in their class - sometimes the only IRWS at the show. I know this is because there are not many of the breed out there - which is why the Festival is a golden opportunity to see more and learn more. It is a real shame that the Eurodog Show is in Dublin the very year of the Anniversary.... perhaps we should have calculated that 25 years ago when the largest IRWS Breed Club in the World was formed!! ;o))
If you really want to see Ireland, you should go on the Munster Circuit where UK IRWS go regularly to combine showing IRWS in Ireland and enjoying a holiday.
BTW, the Festival is 2 weeks after the Eurodog show, so maybe holiday in Ireland after the show and call in on the Festival on the way home?

Where have you been in the centre of England?
