How many Irish Setters do you have?
One now: Glenvarna Fire And Ice At Hooley (Mulligan)
How long have you owned Irish Setters?
37 years
About Me:
My first dog was a much loved Corgi called Bryn.
My previous Irish were:
Kerrigan Amber Dream (Oliver)
Twoacres Joker The Hooley (Flynn)
Twoacres Fergus (Fergus)
Cymbeline Fallon By Hooley (Geordie)
I taught 4 -7 year olds for 17 years and often used to take my first Irish Setter into school. He loved being with the children and they loved being with him. The favourite place to be at story time was next to Oliver!! He was affectionately known as Ollie and many generations of children grew up thinking of Irish Setters as Ollie dogs!!

I got into showing when I retired. Oliver died suddenly only two months after I stopped teaching and as the house was so empty I just knew that I had to have another Irish. I was lucky enough to get a puppy from the late Mrs June Coates (Twoacres). He was Twoacres Joker The Hooley, (Flynn). We went on a steep learning curve together as we found our way around the show world. I very quickly became hooked on this new past time and an obsession began. Over the years I have learnt so much and met so many wonderful friends, all through a shared interest and love of this magnificent breed.

I am on the B Judging list for Irish Setters in the UK and have also judged English Setters, Gordon Setters and Irish Red & White Setters at Open Show level. I was secretary of the East Midlands Social Region of the ISBC in the UK for 14 years and a committee member for 18 years.

As well as showing when possible, I like writing, so often contribute items to the ISBC Newsletter. I also have a particular interest in health matters concerning the breed.
Why are you applying for membership?
B. I am a dog and my owner is at work all day

Thank you so much for the welcome. I have a resuced Red and White Irish setter. Her name is Brie. She has been a joy to watch, grow and become more confident andplay witht eh other 2 dogs we have. SHe is fun and funny. She has become a digger, but she digs for worms.
  • melissa mcclure

she is great except for the worms. I dont know if she started that on her own or if Piper got the idea. Piper is a 3 year old Brittany that was also a rescue. Those two are attached at the hip
  • melissa mcclure

Well Brie is definately interesting and quick. You have to watch where you are stepping in this house. We live in a country setting with a big back yard and you never know what Brie or Piper is bringing into the house. This week we have had 4 dead birds a dead mole a dead mouse and two dead voles and one moth. Last week was very exciting. The girls came in the doggie door playing tug o war with a half dead garden snake. I am not a girly girl but I draw the line at snakes. I jumped up into the sink and started yelling for my fiancee. He has been harassing me all week about that. well now I have to go get 6 tubes of blood drawn oh what fun. My arms are already starting to look like pincushions. I hope your day goes well

Gorlestone Biddy is on a puppy farm pedigree of a dog . that was treated for Epilepsy and HD l actually have a brief case history of this poor baby as the Vet Practise lworked in treated him. We saw him at 14 weeks of age bought ftom a dealer ,he was rickety was having non stop fits and suspicious hips. by the time he was 5months he could not use his back legs Xray confirmed HD,Also the epilepsy was getting worse(remember there were less drugs apart from P,Barb as there are nowadays) He was put to sleep by us at 6months old; the owner paid £45-50 for him this was in 1971 He wasnt the only one from this breeding with these problems l have the full pedigree and the breeders name/address thankfully no longer doing it these people also supplied Golden Retrievers to the same dealer. come back on

Thanks for the welcome, I am really pleased to have found this site and know that there are other people who love the breed, feel a bit of a fraud as I do not breed or show Setters. It was seeing 'Debonair' that got me hooked and I had to have one of these colourful characters and Jinty certainly was a character! broke my heart when I lost her, it's sad that they can't go on forever but bless her she tried and now 4 month old Rio will have to wait and see what he get's up to.
  • Jennifer Martin

Yes, that's Jinty - oop's sorry forgot 'Spirited' - she was registered to me in my maiden name. She was a stunner in her younger days, years ago we were out walking, a chap approached us, he was a Judge, I was amazed that just by looking at her he knew her breeding lines, he thought Jinty was 'superb' , I was over the moon but went on to say I though she was rather on the chunky side, at which point he said 'my dear girl they are working dog's - not bloody super model's!' and it still makes me smile. After Jinty I had been toying with the idea of a rescue Setter, sadly a lot of them are 'older' and I had had an old dog for a long time. I came to the decision that I really needed something younger - perhaps one that had been 'run on', I rang a few people in the North West and into Wales. In the end I contacted Mrs Wall - Elaine, she just told me - 'come and have a look' but I have to say I knew I would be taking him home, I took to Elaine, and - Rio, - 'Hazelbeck's Irish Song' he is a lovely chap, I am really pleased with him he has a great temperament - he goes back to 'Twoacres Edward Bear' on his Sires side.
    Best Wishes
    Jennifer

    Hi Michelle,

I have been in the ring with you a couple of times years ago with my old girls (who are sadly not with us anymore). I have seven puppies (now six weeks old) at the moment and they are very time eating. I look forward to blogging again soon. Deborah Cayton-Lee
  • Deborah Cayton-Lee

My girls names were Loshian Lady May and Stearnwood Melissa. Loshian Lady May (shannon) was bred by a friend of mine and went back to the old Brackenfield lines and Stearnwood Melissa was by Balintyne Call My Tune who harked back the great Wendover Gentleman, who she looked very like. I am going to try to return to some of the older lines if I can when I breed from my youngest bitch next year but have not found a suitable dog yet.
