25 years
About Me:
first IS Sharla died at 15 years. second IS Cherie died Feb 2010 to cancer. Very sad. I was not going to get another IS but saw an add in the paper for pups and could not resist. We bought our Molly down from Queensland by plane. It is 1 year yesterday that she arrived and looked so cute in her crate at the airport. The staff were great and Molly travelled to our home some 45 kms from the airport without any problems. Called in at the vet on the way home to show the new pup off and together with the vet nurse named her Molly. She has become a huge part of our lives.

does skype cost? how does it work?

That had to be scarey for Molly coming all that way on her own....poor baby! Have you tried to borrow a skateboard and just scoot it along so she can investigate it?  See how bad I am.....have to try to solve everyone of my Molly's fears here so just passing on a bit of my craziness to you!  I can just picture that tiny Molly in a crate and all the strange sounds she heard........then bingo ...there you all were....and I bet she wants no part of going away from you so perhaps the skateboard triggers that memory.....better not put this on regular forum or we might get jumped.  I wonder what Molly remembers....I can now say the word Heidi and she does not react at all.....infact we call her game of hiding the bone...hidey bone here.  So perhaps all the positive things we do dims those distant memories except for the really scarey ones?

  • Sherry Miller

it's a bone I get from the pet store here....edible one....she chewed on it a bit and then took it and buried it under the pillow on the sofa...now she is outside doing her nightly rounds of the yard. My boys would have finished that bone off in half an hour but she makes them last forever it seems.  Molly does not seem to be a real chewer of hard things....likes to chew on a tennis ball but have to keep an eye on that as balls tend togive out and then I throw them away or she will chew on her soft squeaky toys to make them squeak.   I don't usually give fresh bones here due to one getting some caught in his throat years ago.  Molly would love that lamb shank I am thinking.

I sort of noticed that on forum....felt bad for Tracy today as she is really doing a great job with an untrained dog....just do not feel the need to attack anyone on here .  Guess I truly believe you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.....though why I would want to catch flies I never understood.  Sounds like you also had door scratchers there.....I did also at one point....kept losing my screen door so I am really enjoying Molly not jumping up on door to come in....we worked with her when we first got her on either barking to let us know she wants in but first she does that Irish dance with her feet on the wooden step and you can't help but see her dance so she gets let in usually before she barks if we are in the breakfast room.

Do you all celebrate St Patrick's Day there?

  • Sherry Miller

Hope Molly has a good sleepover...and I am sure she will charm them so they spoil her. and hope your trip is a good one.  Talk to you when you get back.
  • Sherry Miller

Trying to figure the time difference and if you are now lonely>..like you are missing a part of yourself?  Hope Molly does well at the vets...and that you have a nice day for your trip.
  • Sherry Miller

Wednesday -9 pm here.....so you have a wee bit more time before you drop her off....are you taking a special blanket and toy for her?
  • Sherry Miller

Doesn't it make the heart feel so happy to know Molly missed you? Did she have to investigate the whole house like you moved everything while she was gone?  or did she zonk out for lack of sleep?   Sounds like a really pretty sky....it is noon here as I write this on Friday....inch of light snow but it was a well behaved one for us...on grass and trees and not on streets and sidewalks.  Warming up now for a few days and lots of rain here on Sunday night...have a dinner for our assistant manager who is moving to a different store that evening and hate when they forecast severe storms this far ahead!  Give Molly a hug for my Molly and I .
  • Sherry Miller

Molly travels very well by car....infact she would love to live in the car I think. Loves to look out the window as the world passes by....usually only lies down after she has had a long walk or run ....otherwise she is too nosey and wants to see everything.

Wine tasting weekend sounds wonderful....lucky you!  We have a couple wineries within driving distance here we like to go to in the summer.  Though this year I have gotten quite fond of a muscato wine over the winter so hoping one of them will have one when we go this summer.

How lucky you can drop her off at a kennel that close to the airport and pick her up as you return so no double trips and less time she is actually kenneled.  Wish we had that option here.  So far Molly's kennel experience has been at the one we use out in the country where she went last year ....had doggie daycare during the day so only kenneled at night ( Alan's spoiling his baby even when he is not there) and it was a good experience for Molly so do not think it will be a problem leaving her in the future.  Have not gotten far enough here to plan vacations this summer....working around schedules of others at work ...and my neice's wedding last weekend of July so need to get something figured out soon.

Molly limping a wee bit today...no crying or whimpering of pain so just trying to massage her leg and keep her rather on quiet side for a day or so here....hard as she still wants to chase those squirrels!  Seems better today ...think she pulled or strained a muscule yesterday while I was at work....hard to keep an Irish calm as you know but doing my best here.

  • Sherry Miller

Alan said Molly came in from the yard favoring her left rear leg....so figure she twisted it or perhaps landed wrong on one of her leaps accross the yard.  She took it easy last night but today I am trying very hard not to play with her ....she wants us to chase her or play fetch but trying to give it a day or so to be sure all is well.  Still a wee bit stiff  when she gets up from lying down so rather not push it today .

Sounds so funny to hear you had a parrot in your yard....sounds like Molly is becoming a wee bit of a hunter....and I hope she does not catch that guinea pig!  I don't mind them chasing things I just don't want to deal with it if they catch something here!  Hated it when Molly got that poor bird last year....though she did not tear it up and dropped it immediately for me......think she wanted it to fly again so she could chase it.

Trying to remember what Aussie wines we have had here....know we tried one at least a few years ago.  Will look when I go to the store to see if I can find the ones we tried.  This is my weekend off so am being rather lazy....trying to figure out what I want from grocerystore tomorrow is the extend of my endeavors today.....can't understand why we have to keep eating when I don't want to cook!

  • Sherry Miller

Like reds and some whites that are semi sweet. Would love a list to find them here if I can.

Wedding will be here in town....afternoon wedding and evening reception about hour from here.  This is my neice who received her engagement ring from the collar of her
Golden Retriever....and since has adopted a young Golden who will move out with her when she is married....my sister told her she can not take the older GR! :)  I come from a large family but I am the only one into IS...two now have Golden's,  one a Dalmation .rest had All American mutts . Sort of interesting to watch neices and nephews as they start adult lives and watch their choices in pets....so far it is one All American Mutt, one Malamute and now the Golden.  Waiting for one to get an IS but so far no luck.

  • Sherry Miller

Hope Molly enjoys her Saturday walk about town....and gets lots and lots of petting and compliments...something I think that just walking one of our Irish makes happen.  They never petted the Brittany , Pebbles like they do our Molly.

Molly acting fine but still going to take it easy on playing for another 24 hours just to be sure...she had me hold her hidey bone while she chewed on it for about ten minutes and now has hidden it inside a boot in our closet.  Just finished chasing her tail....she has figured out if she goes by the wall she can trap her tail on the wall and catch it so when she is done chasing it she gets by a wall and captures it I guess to show her tail she won?  Now she is sleeping on the sofa/

  • Sherry Miller

I am so happy that Neil and Molly are both alright....and how scarey that had to be for all of you....glad Molly was heeling so nicely that it prevented you having to deal with injuries or worse.  Hate that thought....aren't you glad we train our Molly's?  Hugs to her from us here in USA.

Our Molly does catch her tail at the end....when she is tired of chasing it she gets close to a wall and when her tail hits the wall she grabs it....stands there for a minute ....like she is saying   Hey look I won! and then trots off to something else.  None of my boys ever caught it so she has thought this out so she is always the winner!  Sort of makes us laugh and try to figure out how long she will chase it before she decides to win the game by catching it on the wall....though that is cheating.

I am so sorry your walk was not a good one today....and I agree that all too often drivers think they are the only ones on the streets...worse here are the ones talking on cell phones while they drive.  Are you taking Molly to training class in the morning?  you really have a great story to tell of how training helped save her today....good for beginners to hear that message.

  • Sherry Miller

Sorry to hear you have the cell phone issue going there also....pretty bad here and they also text and drive.......grrrrrrrr have had a few pretty bad accidents due to this here but figure it is worldwide also.  I do not talk while driving....sometimes I think this need to stay connected has made too many people forget the days of really getting away from the world and just relaxing.

Molly being a stinker today.  Was trying to get her to do her tricks and everytime I told her to sit she trotted accross the family room and sat on Alan's lap....and gave me the I sat look....what more do you want?  Naturally Alan and Angie were cracking up with laughter so I gave up and am carrying the treats in my pocket in hopes she will want to do her tricks again in a wee bit.  Think I need to reinforce Sit Front here while they are not arround!  Smarty pants!

Hope you all had a better end to your weekend after yesterday's almost mishap.  How did training go today?

    Hugs.

    Sherry

By off lead it is in room or fenced park?  Molly would heel off lead? do a long sit and down stay off lead? and a recall?  Smiling here as I think of my boys....they crawled after me on the long down stay.....to everyone's amusement.  Worth a try to see where you are at with her.....will definitely let you know where you need to work a little more with her.  Will this end her lessons or do you go on to the next step?  /Are  you working toward an obedience title? I never did really walk my dogs out in public off lead....down at the lake we did not use a leash but allowed them to run in wooded area and they did  fine.....here in the neighborhood that they know well I would throw the leash over my shouder and walk hands free and they did fine.....and last two houses before ours I would drop the leash and they would head for home.    I need to take our Molly to some training sessions here....just have to get work settled down so I can find a set time to be able to be off each week.  Training a new sales lead this week so my job will now have a co sales lead to split hours with.  I really like the young lady who I will be training so big plus for me going into this.

Molly was playing to her audience here....and she got the laughs and petting she was looking for from Alan.  Wee bit later he was in the kitchen making a salad and she did her tricks perfectly.....so will need to work on the Sit Front with her til she is doing it each time I ask her to....afraid I got a wee bit lax in doing her tricks....she did follow all the ones we do by hand signal perfectly.....just that sit seems to be the problem .....
Alan says Molly figures she does not see us sitting on the floor so why should she? I did not reward the not sitting and left the room while they were all laughing....she came looking for me and tried to pick my pocket for the treats but waited a bit before I again did her tricks with her and she did them.

  • Sherry Miller

Eunice I can understand how you feel....we are over protective of Molly also...is why we do not go to the dog parks with her.....enclosed but I worry about the other dogs fighting possibly....I am very careful of where she is off lead....try to stay ahead of temptations or her being a target of aggressive dogs etc.  What other types of dogs are in the training group?  and is that area fenced at all?  See what a worrywart I can be?  Do not do what you are not comfortable with and let them know when you feel she is ready you will allow her to run free and not until.  You know Molly better than anyone else!
  • Sherry Miller

Got your back on that no fence thingie.  How do the other dogs play? and what type of dogs are they?  is the trainer and most owners of dogs younger?  Those are all factors I would put into the equation .....part of reason we are wee bit over protective is we know the risks and also all too well know the feelings of loss. hugs!
  • Sherry Miller

I would really worry about what might be in that creek....we have one here by a local park that kids and dogs were swimming in....dogs and kids both broke out in a bad rash ...would clear up but when they went back into that creek it would reoccur..Local news carried the story of one dogs battle with the rash,,,,it was a long one and since then they have put a sign up warning no swimming due to chemicals leaching from the ground into the creek.  I can understand about wanting her to run off some energy...is why Alan does the long lead wild walks with her....and why we play ball in the yard with her .  I would watch how the other dogs play, do they run where you can not see them? is agression shown by any? How does Molly react to being greeted by one of them? Do you take her in the area while they are playing? and do any of the dogs come up to greet her and want to play?  How much recall do these dogs have?  Wish I was not so far away so our Molly's could play together....bet they would wear each other out.

  • Sherry Miller

Eunice that would have you on edge....watching that with Neil and Molly and that silly lady acting like it was their fault and not her own....that is YOUR FAMILY.....and if you are like me any scares or threats to their safety get to me big time!  Just so thankful that no one was hurt.  I think it is the female part of us that keeps us worry worting over things....and also trying to protect our beloved Irish's and I bet your kids , also?  Know I was that way and still am as much as I try not to be! Can't just turn that gene off to let go that easy. Hope this week is a better week for you.

What toy did Molly pick?  does it squeak or have floppy arms?  those are Molly's favorites here as she loves to shake them.....I bet it was fun to walk thru the nursery with her...are you looking for new plants or just browsing?  We are about two months away from the Farmer's Market opening here and I can not wait....will be fun to take Molly out to lunch there or on the little city square....want to get Alan to go so he sees how well she behaves for us.

  • Sherry Miller

Saturday night, midnight here.  The Farmer's Market I go to we have to drive to...but then we walk around a couple of blocks ...taking turns going into the shops, bakery, craft stores.  One shop I love to go into is the Shannon shop....full of all things from Ireland....I go in looking for Irish Setter items but so far have not found many.  I keep asking for them but to no avail.  The Farmer's Market has a nursery type area full of flowering plants and vegetables for home gardeners....and then stalls where vendors sell fresh produce....one where they sell hormone free meat, honey and even some fresh baked pies and cookies.  There is a snowcone stand on one end with another dealer of beautiful hanging flower baskets....in front are three small take out restaurants and picnic tables.  That is where we did lunch with Molly last year....an Amtrack train track is behind the market itself....so Molly gets exposed to lots of different sounds there as well as people.  She can actually walk thru the market part with us as it is open air.  On the other side of the railroad tracks is a big plaza in front of about six different restaurants and a coffee house...in front is a fountain and lots of tables so if weather is nice a lot of people eat outside....some evenings they have various types of musicans playing also so it is just a really relaxing place to visit.  Now if I cross the main street there I can walk to a soft served custard stand and indulge my sweet tooth also...just a lot to do in a small area where people are friendly and dogs are welcomed.

Sounds like Molly got a toy my Molly would adore....those are the ones she carries around all the time.....loves to greet us with one when we come home....lies on her back and holds them with her front paws and squeaks the squeaker....and her famous shake the heck out it game.  Hope your Molly enjoys her new toy.  Our Molly is sleeping in the chair right now just about ready for bedtime.

  • Sherry Miller

Eunice when you bathe Molly do you do it in the bathtub or shower?  Have a handheld shower thing here that just has been wonderful for getting all the soap out....put on a bathing suit and just take Molly into the shower...I take down the shower wand and can control where the water goes....and it sure is easier on my back than leaning over a tub.  I use a conditioner after the shampoo part and she always smells so good ....wrap her in a large beach towel and massage her to get the worse of the water off her before letting her out of the bathroom I then go take my shower while she sort of drips dry a bit . She will then prance to find Alan or Angie to get made over....and usually will start a game of chase me with the tea towel as she just feels so good after her bath.  So far no luck with using a hair dryer on her....she hates the noise.
  • Sherry Miller

Laughing here...bet your hoping she does not catch her pet guinea pig....keeps her busy and bet she gets into chasing it big time.

Trying to imagine Alan giving Molly a bath and can't.......has always been my job here...he takes them to the groomer if I ask him to bathe her.  Thinking will be making an appointment here for that before St Patrick's Day...nails need it and time to trim her feet up again....I will maintain but let them do the main trim.  I block our drain to catch the fur that comes off during a bath.  Glad you have Neil to help you as that sounds like it might be a long process to get her all rinsed.  Love when they look like a drowned rat ..and so skinny...then hour later all shiney and sweet smelling .  I can't let Molly out while she is drying or she will roll in the grass. Does your Molly roll?

  • Sherry Miller

I miss it in the winter...can not wait for it to open this year.  I had never taken my boys there but for some reason decided Molly could go. We all enjoyed it a lot and she was sooooo good while having lunch with us...lying under the table and drinking her water and eating a few training treats so patiently for Angie and I.

I am thinking you better name your guinea pig....we named our squirrel here as that is who keeps Molly the busiest.  Mr. Crooky Tail ( his tail was really crooked when he was a baby squirrel..the year we did not have a dog here we started putting nuts out for this squirrel and he is still here with his MRS now )   Can a guinea pig survive your winters there outside?  I am off to bed so have a great day.

  • Sherry Miller

Hard to imagine a guinea pig as a pet running loose here........but hope Molly does not catch it.  I am off to a goodbye dinner for our assistant manager tonight.....supposed to be rain storms here....but better than snow and ice so will not complain.

Molly now fine on her leg....so figure she was just a wee bit too wild in her chasing our squirrel friend.  Hope you are having a great day.

  • Sherry Miller

Hi Eunice....hope your week is going well...and that Molly is enjoying cooler weather.  We had some really bad storms here last night...winds 70 mph ...only damage was it took three sections of our 6 foot wooden fence down....much to Molly's delight.  She was so funny this AM when she went out...stalking over to the fence and sniffing up and down the part that had fallen into the neighbors yard....then she decided she should go visit and run around their yard.  Her two buddies, both Black Labs live there .  We told her no she has to stay in her own yard and that was the end of it .....she will stand and gaze over there but not go into their yard.  I am so impressed with her today....their dogs just come visit each time they are let out....only problem with that is they do not get along with the two dogs who live behind us.  Insurance company will get back with us I think tomorrow and Alan is going to put a temporary fence up after they come....though I told him Molly would obey just having a string across the opening!  We just remind her to stay in her yard each time we let her out and shake a finger at her....she goes out and turns around after she gets off the patio....we just let her see us watching and seems to be the end of it. Our boys would have been over there waiting on their back doorstep for someone to come pet them. Now if her friend the squirrel runs over there I am not so sure she will stay in our yard....she can not get out to the street as their yard is also fenced so I don't worry about that
  • Sherry Miller

Congratulations to your son...will that mean he will move closer to you in Sydney?  would be nice to have those grandchildren close enough to spoil!

Fence that came down goes into neighbors back yard( where her two playmates live) and so it is fenced and no danger of her getting into street.  Just so impressed she stays in our yard even when the other two dogs run back home...she sits and waits for them to come back into our yard.  Had some tornadoes here in MO last night....these were winds from bad storm...but luckily no other damage....we are debating if we wish to go back with 6 foot fence again or not....second time wind has taken it down.  Molly does not jump so we do not really need the six foot....would like to keep some sort of privacy screening by the patio but will see what Alan has in mind....he has to wait for a bit anyway if he is going to do the work til ground thaws and dries up to put fence posts in so we have time.

We are a chilly tonight but day times are reaching into the 50's so not too bad.  Our first day of spring will be March 21 but we may have a wee bit more winter weather.  Our springs we usually get some good rains here....saying is April showers bring May flowers!  might have freezes up to the first week or two of May so I never plant my flowers before Mother's Day here. Hope you get your cooler weather so you can enjoy some time outside with Molly.

I do think our girls look a lot a like....infact both Angie and Alan thought one of your pictures was our Molly!  must be the name!

  • Sherry Miller

Hope it does move them closer so you can see the grandchildren more often.  Will keep my fingers crossed for him.

Molly is bugging me to come to bed....it is late here so I guess she is right....as she usually is !  Quite the little bossy lady when we do something different here...had to laugh tonight though when I realized how spoiled she is...sofa in both family room and living room has covers on it so she can be on them along with chairs in both rooms!  My boys got the end of the one sofa in the living room legally so they could watch out the window.  They would sometimes sneak into chairs .  I can honestly say I did not cover all them for her....Alan did!  Think she has him wrapped around her paw!

  • Sherry Miller

    Hi Eunice,

Doing fine here....working a lot til we get new sales lead trained and past the big event we are having at work next week.  Then will see how hours work out.  How are you all doing?  Sorry you still are so hot...we are going to have more rain tomorrow and dip in temperature but looks like it will just be for the weekend.  Working both days but Alan meeting me for dinner after I close the store Saturday night ...so least that night I get out of cooking.

Molly has been loving our weather...Alan has been leaving the back door open for her to run in and out while I am at work....that way he does not have to keep letting her out.  For the first time she actually fell asleep out in the yard yesterday,,,,,Alan was afraid something was wrong as she had never done that before. Think she wore herself out chasing that squirrel.  Alan put up a temporary fence til we get the other fixed...Molly could jump it lickety split if she wanted to but is content to nuzzle noses with the two Labs next door so I think she would like the temporary fence to stay.  Wooden one she had to stick her head under it to see them .....only spot she dug by the fence was where she greets them under the fence every morning.

How is Molly doing?  Did you see the discussion on spaying on forum?  almost told them to look at your Molly's picture to compare the difference when I added the note for them to look at my Molly to see how her coat is. Interesting to see the discussions on it and the differences in cultures  and countries.  New to the female issue but we did also neuter all of our males except the first one.  Hope all is going well for you and that it cools off soon for you.....has Molly decided to take a dip in that pool yet?

    Hugs from Molly to Molly.

    S

  • Sherry Miller

New discussion....easy for me to add comments as was not a choice I had to make as it was already done when we found Molly.  Just find it interesting the difference in opinion in different countries.

Molly just digs a spot so she can pop her head under to say Hello to her buddies...does not try to dig out so we just gave up and let her have her little peek a boo hole ....neighbors love it as they love Molly.  She is just so nosey she likes to know what is going on in their yard....and greets all their company that way also.

That is expensive and glad your son was able to work it out so he can take care of the grandkids so you can do your winery weekend.  I bet you will have fun.  Wish it was winery time here but have a few months yet to wait for the nice weather for dining out on their patio's . Are you going to just one winery?  Here we have a few that people actually ride bikes (or can do it by car) from one to another in a long trail ride.  Afraid I might be too tipsy to get back on a bike after the second stop!  You can purchase a picnic lunch and your bottle of wine also...some craft shops also to go to.  Just a fun way to spend a day outside and enjoying nature here.  Hope all is going well for you and that your weather will be a wee bit cooler for your trip.

I agree with your trainer....and like the long leash idea.....I need to get a new one for Molly ...we do have an extender leash but only Alan uses it as I do not like it.  Just be careful that she does not tangle in under growth .  Bet Molly does well on her exam...is it all onlead?

  • Sherry Miller

Sounds like a wonderful weekend...and hopping on and off bus would mean you could have a wee bit more wine if you wanted to!  I am sure Molly will do well at the kennel but will be extremely happy to see you when you pick her up.  Hope she does well on her exam....and really hoping she puts the rest of the dogs and the trainer to shame on recall....especially the ones who are pressuring you to let her run free in area you are not comfortable with.
Be sure to let me know how she does .

Just had a brief rain storm here...more rains tonight so seems small rivers and streams are the concern here for some flooding...they will be flooding a bit more due to melt off up above us of all that snow this winter .  Might have to change way I go to work due to flooding but we do not live close to where it floods .  Seems so funny to me that it is almost Sunday there for you while it is Friday evening here!  Molly spent the day in and out...took a few of her stuffed babies out to play with but also brought them back in...like she is taking care of them.

  • Sherry Miller

Thanks and I am sure Alan and I will have a great dinner tomorrow evening when I get off work.

Will you bring wine back with you from the various wineries?  We have one we stop to on way to the lake for lunch ...and afraid we love their plain old grape juice....used to buy it by the case when my girls were younger.  Just tastes like they just made it today ...now that I am thinking about that I want some!  We can buy their wine in local stores here but have never seen their grape juice which is a shame....our girls always saluted the New Year with a wine glass of that grape juice. Some of the wineries here also have wonderful jams they make from the grapes.....just a fun thing to do.

Molly cuddled up sleeping as it is raining outside and temperature is taking about a 30 degree drop tonight....see saw weather here for the next few weeks it looks like...winter just does not want to let go of us this year.  March came in like a lamb so the saying is it will roar out like a lion....sure hope they are wrong on that one/

  • Sherry Miller

I know you are still thinking and that is why I wanted to let you know it was being discussed again.....rough decision to make I know.  You kennel Molly when she is in season?  I do not think most kennels here will take a female in season to board.  Sounds like a good way to handle it if they keep all males away!  Afraid my only true experience of a female in season was little Daisy down the street....she would escape her owners and come to my front porch and tear up our screens trying to get to our Shannon.....lost two sets of screens to her before they finally got her spayed!

Also have been following the attacked again forum....see reference to dog park fights so perhaps my decision to avoid them is a good one for Molly.  Just everytime I go by the one that is closest to us it seems to have a lot of large pit bull mixes and labs. I notice when Molly plays with the two labs next door that she will play for about 5 minutes and then is more interested in birding in their yard....they will sneak up on her to get her to play again but very quickly she is back to her hunting.  She likes them but sometimes they get too rough for her and she heads to the gate then. If they would play chase me she would love to play til she falls over exhausted but seems like they like to body wrestle and that is not something she likes at all.

I think we all have lost dogs too young to either cancer or auto immune diseases....and so we worry about every thing we can do to prevent it but sometimes forget that it is what or how the breeder bred their dogs that probably has more impact on their lives than choices we make for them....except for good food and medical care and loving them.  I think in some ways being an only might be a very good thing for our girls....they get all the attention they crave, and we get to truly enjoy that close bonding we have with our Molly's.

  • Sherry Miller

Our Molly looks so prissy next to the two lady labs next door.....just dainty in build and mannerism....though she can really be a clown....she likes to jump over them when they run at her.

Eunice, I did not know you had that problem so early with Cherie and how difficult it was to manage....that would make me think twice also before doing it again.  Our vet pretty much said that same thing Tracy said on forum.....but as you know it was not a decision we had to make.  Don't stress over it if you can manage the kenneling in her seasons perhaps that is the way to handle this with Molly.  And then we can compare coats over the years to see if there really is that much difference.

Give Molly a hug from our Molly.  boy could we confuse people on forum with our two Mollys!

  • Sherry Miller

Eunice...I think you are doing what you think best for Molly...and your family.  No one should ever try to make you do what you do not want to do....includes that off lead playing in area and among dogs you are not sure of and the spaying issue.  We each have to try to do what is best for our particular MOLLY  and our families.  Can not wait to hear how her exam came out today.  Have a great day and spoil Molly a wee bit no matter how that exam came out!

Was Molly leaning into Neil on that sit?  I sometimes think they should be called Irish Leaners....as all of ours liked to lean against your leg.  Glad she is coming along....did she do off lead recall?   I always had trouble on the down, leave your dog.....I would get half way across the floor and hear the snickers and know they were crawling after me.

We had a great dinner....and now just about time to get ready to sleep as I open and close store tomorrow.  Talk at you soon.

12 hours is too long for them to be alone I agree! Glad you will be getting to spend some time with the grandchildren but am sure you will really be missing Molly.  I know you said last year they kept you updated while you were on vacation so hope they will give you a Molly report while you are gone.  I snuck away to call to check on our Molly last summer....as we had a bet who would call to check on her first ....only to find Alan had also been checking on her.  Not sure what we could have done from that distance but sure made us feel better knowing she was having a blast playing in all the playyards and with the other dogs. Hope you enjoy both your trips,

Will have to check out that movie...and where it is about.  Never have heard of it.

Glad you are able to spend time with your son and that your daughter inlaw will be able to be with her family and catch up on some familytime with them.

Still seems so funny to me to watch Alan with Molly....he liked our boy dogs but they always were my dogs...not Miss Molly...not sure which of us is crazier about her....and he spoils her rotten.  Molly is smart enough to know how to play each of us so pretty much anything she wants to do she gets to do....always someone ready to play with her or watch her antics...like her hide the bone game....she never does it unless she has an audience which is usually me!  She will ignore that silly bone til I am home which just makes the game even funnier.  She knows who rough houses with her...and who really likes to play with what toy and picks the game accordingly it seems.  We both have just enjoyed her so much .  We do tease Alan about stealing my dog all the time...and then I get the your the one that found her so she is your dog business....but it is him she stalks by watching the windows when she is outside...she has to know where he is if he is at home and likes to follow him from room to room.  The boys always followed me from room to room but never stalked me from outside thru the windows.

Eunice your Molly sounds so much like ours...wants to be in on everything.  Alan is out doing some errands so Molly is waiting for him to come home.....there will be much ado when he walks thru that door...she is so nosey she will be checking out what is in his bags but most of all making sure he knows she is happy he is home.  She will greet him with toy in mouth and roo at him hoping he will drop everything to play their chase game. Tried to get a picture of her yesterday as she had three stuffed toys in her mouth while sitting on the sofa...and rooing at him to come get her....missed the picture as took me to long to get my camera.
  • Sherry Miller

Roo ing is like she is trying to bark in a wee bit of a yodel style...but with her mouth full of stuffed toys it comes out all muffled and funny. She is telling us all about what she thinks it seems when she does it.  Wish we had shops close enough to walk to...have to drive to the ones we go to but Molly loves seeing all the people and just going anywhere different...as you well know an Irish Setter gets attention almost anywhere they go ...Molly loves the attention but sometimes would just rather walk than stop to be admired and petted.

So now Molly has found her calling...weed the yard and then replant the weeds in an area with no plants!  Messy enough for a bath?  Trying to put Molly's off til Friday as we have more rain due Tuesday/Wednesday so she will just get all muddy again!  Got her a Shamrock bow today for St Patricks Day....but she does not want to wear it on her head!!!  so will just work out a way to attach it to her collar.

Here they have two different parades for St Patrick's Day...one is the Hiberian parade( Irish families ) and the other is full of floats etc ...bars serve corn beef and cabbage and a lot of green beer get drunk.  We just do our traditonal Irish Setter walk here....Molly will get a nice long walk wearing her green, a special bone and then we will have corn beef, cabbage and new potatoes and carrots....maybe some Irish Soda bread.  Big day for bars here!

Is Sydney like that ?  Love Molly rooting out those plants on you....so far our Molly has not bothered plants....hope she does not start.  Had the one who kept tearing out my baby bushes and upended me into the mud hole but not ready to ever go thru that again....it's funny now but at the time I was about as mad as I ever got at any of my boys.

Funny how we remember them by their favorite thing to do that annoyed us! Shannon was our escape artist...he climbed though.  Last Shilo was our gardener.  Molly has not done much digging this winter after those moles but figure when they start moving around again she will be after them again....she does stop if she see's us looking at her.

I think it would be fun to go to pre school ...wonder if they will have green eggs and ham or make shamrocks.  We used to do that here for the little ones ...and read Green Eggs and Ham for them on that day.  Schools here the kids would wear their  green and study about Ireland....remember one year I made Irish Soda bread for the class.  We started our Irish Setter walk's way back when our oldest was in a stroller...a lot of times we get early spring around then so it would be one of the first nice days for a walk so we just decorated the dog along with my daughter and called it our parade.  Even poor Pebbles got dressed up as an Irishman on St. Patricks Day if he was here with us.  We don't do the bar scene as it can get pretty wild in the evening.

Sounds wonderful to me...lying asleep in sunshine!  What a rough life she has.  I would keep her inside also while they demolish that house.  Are they going to build a new one?  When our neighbors had a new roof put on this summer Molly started out the back door and saw a man on their roof...scared her at first so she backed up and then kept sneaking up to the door to see if he was still there....finally she barked at him. She is just so nosey she does not miss a thing going on.  You could almost see her thinking...people don't belong up there...only birds and squirrels do.!!!!

We just had Mardi Gras celebration here this past weekend....each year getting to be bigger and bigger....start drinking at 9 am and keep it up all day, like you said about your Austraila days it is just too wild for us.  Seems like they keep finding reasons to have street drinking parties or bar hopping events here lately.  We live on out skirts in the county so not near where all that fun in going on!  We tend to do our celebrating here at home and have lotsssssss of entertainment just having Molly in our home,

  • Sherry Miller

Just did a quick mini dog bath here.....Molly for some reason tonight decided she had to keep going out....heard her playing with her water polo ball earlier ( for some reason she likes to play with it in the dark) and then she came in and out about five times...figured something had her interest out there.....well last time she came in her nose was covered with dirt....and paws caked with clay soil.....so into the shower she went....this time I put her in and showered her from the outside....amazed she let me do it but she seemed to like it...Thank heavens for hand held shower heads!  Then she romped thru the house with the towel I dried her off with....still has it and is sleeping on it.  Will see tomorrow where she was digging but figure she was after a mole or perhaps a bunny.....guess I spoke too soon about her not digging this winter!
  • Sherry Miller

Think she was after those moles last night....rain all day today so glad she did not dig today.  Hope you all are doing well and Molly enjoying some cooler weather there.
  • Sherry Miller

is it greenish or yellow pus like?  might be from pollen...try washing them out....may need to call  vet to get an eye cream for them....

  • Sherry Miller

Eunice...are the whites of her eyes really red?  and is she pawing at her eyes?  are you sure there is not anything in her eye?  Take a soft soft tissue and sort of roll to a soft point and place it just at the edge of her inner eye...so it sort of touches the yucky stuff...pull away gently so the yucky stuff comes off with it.  See if eye fills again with yunk.
  • Sherry Miller

Hope I will be able to decipher it after a few wine tastings!  Give Molly a cuddle for our Molly.....bet if nothing else kennel may be able to contact vet to get some eye ointment for her...wonder if it was the plant she was tearing up yesterday?  might have irritated the eye.  Is it greenish or yellowish discharge?

  • Sherry Miller

If you hold your hand softly over her eyes before you wipe them she should close them for a few seconds and sometimes it will get all the gunk down to the lower eye lid so it is easier to wipe out....take tissues and wipe her eyes right before you leave her tomorrow...hope you have a wonderful trip and find lotssss of yummy tasting wines!
  • Sherry Miller

Eunice hope Molly's eyes are just irritation from pollen or possible allergy to something in yard....and that she is fine in AM and while you are gone.....guess with all that wine you won't miss her too badly until you go to your sons!  I am off to bed here so have a great trip .  Just remember to wipe those eyes right before you drop her off tomorrow.  Hugs from my Molly to your Molly.
  • Sherry Miller

Hopefully they will use an eye ointment once or twice a day until it clears up ...and you will come home to no eye infection....bet they will have it all cleared up for you while you are gone.  My Shilo seemed to get eye infections and also ear infections so it was on going here.

Molly all cuddled up watching out the front window for Alan to come home.....seems she misses whoever is gone.  :)  Hope you have a wonderful trip .

Hi Eunice....hope you had a lot of fun trying out some new wines!  Are you with the grandkids right now?  Hope all is well with all your family and spoil those little ones just a tiny bit but most of all have fun with them.  Seems like they grow up overnight ( did our own kids grow as fast as grandkids do?) Hugs!
