How many Irish Setters do you have?
After loosing my beautiful girl Jasmine...(aka Irish Show Champion Caspians Modesty JW) I now only have two Irish again....Kirkavagh Darara At Mayfred (Saffy) and her son Mayfred Mr Magnifico (Findlay) I have now added another wonderful baby to my house, so am back to three...
How long have you owned Irish Setters?
since 1971
About Me:
I am retired and my life revolves around my grandchildren and my dogs. If I am not with one I am with the other. We all like going on country walks, and to the beach, I spend a lot of time traveling to and from shows, both in Scotland/England and Ireland. Saffy and Fin travel to the shows with me, but I only show Fin at the moment, he is doing very nicely for me in his first couple of years in the ring, and is enjoying, (probably too much), his show career. Because he is a very naughty boy at times...But has learned that his 'job' is in the ring. And he loves it..
Just added my new baby girl...Suteresett Mine Mine Mine at Mayfred....she is by Mr Jingles out of Suteresett Black Magic....she is at the moment a typical baby, into everything but she is all Mine.a little treasure. and she has settled into our house as though she has been here forever..

    Hi Dee!

    Thank  you for your comments!!!

  • Nicole Wilson

Hey Dee - sorry I've been not in touch either :-) Are you still snowed in??? ;-)) Will speak soon, hopefully!
  • Michelle Walsh

Good Lord Dee it's hard to imagine that many puppies, 15 is a huge litter !!! They must have kept you all very, very busy...not to mention Jasmine !! what a mammy !! It's a pity one of the little mites didn't make it but to have 14 healthy puppies is a fantastic achievement and it's great that they are all still doing well. :)
  • Michelle Walsh

I think you're allowed to be a bit biased Dee ! after-all you're like their second mummy :) and well done Saffy !! I was looking at more of the puppy pics...it's amazing you were able to find so many different little collars for them all :)
  • Tania ..danwish-irishsetters

Thanks ,, yes a few of rafts puppies owners have joined so will be nice to stay in contact .. Good luck tomorrow

    Dee,

I saw your comment in the blog about weight issues and Irish Setters. I'm curious about your views on the downside of the BARF diet! I've started my guy on a barf type diet (the frozen ones that you buy) but have concerns about his weight. I think he has lost some since starting! I'd love to hear what you have to say as we're inclined to hear all the plus points! I'd love to hear the other side of the coin!!! So at some stage when you have time to spare if you wouldn't mind!!!!

    Hi Dee,

I haven't noticed your comment. It is nice to hear that we will meet there and that I will see Saffy and Fin :) Unfortunately Newton doesn't have qualifications and blood test :/ and the flight is quite long because there is no direct flight from Warsaw to Birmingham. But I hope that maybe next year or in 2013 I will take him with me :)

    All the best,

    Ania

  • Nicole Wilson

Hi Dee ! How are things ? many thanks for your kind words & well wishes for my poor lad. I'm really hoping wednesday the 16th of feb will be the last time he has to have that 'bleary eyed' look :) He's pretty much back to 'normal'now. When he's under again, the vet will check his mouth just to make sure she got all the bits out. I'm also hoping the meds will keep him infection free as the hole in his mouth is pretty massive.

    ~Thanks again Dee, take care.

    Hi Dee

I pleaded with my parents to buy an Irish Setter when I was 10yo. I have always loved them but ended up with English Setters when I was older. I like all the colours but the Orange ones have come to me. Setters bring great joy into our lives, don't they!!

    Best wishes from Susan

  • Finding_Beau

Definitely, I have been blessed and continue to be blessed with being chosen by my Setters with spots. Also, Sam still comes to visit almost every day. She flies away in the evenings to be with her heron mate. He visits on occasions with her. It is a beautiful sight seeing them fly together with their wings almost touching. There must be a reason Sam has formed a friendship with me which has continued now for almost 2 1/2 years. I hope it means that I am not meant to leave this piece of land.

    Hi Dee !

Many thanks again for your well wishes for the big-man ! It'll be great not to see himl imping & uncomfortable for a change. I'm glad your op was such a success Dee, hopefully Lego's will be too and yes he should have been on the stage with those big brown sorrowful woe is me eyes :)

On a more serious note you're in my thoughts Dee over this little puppy. I sincerely do hope that you hear good news about her situation as soon as possible & that someone is keeping her safe, it must have been a terrible situation for her owners to find themselves in, we're all hoping for a positive outcome xx

    ~Lego & Michelle

I'm so sorry to hear this Dee, I'm nowhere near Norwich myself but, if you want me to try to make enquiries with English Setter friends out that way, (totally discreetly), I would be more than happy to.  If you would like me to then just pm me the details and I will get straight on it..although from what you write it sounds like we may be out of our league, but I would love to try to help in any way I can.  Take care, Sheree x
  • Sherry Miller

Dee I am hoping that they made plans with the vet there to care for your little pup...it may be all they could do to find a safe place for her til they can make arrangements to get her out.  I do not think I could leave Miss Molly either but they may not have had much choice. Such unsettled times it seems worldwide lately and affecting so many peoples lives and futures. Hoping soon you have positive news on this little one and know what arrangements the couple made for her will help relieve the stress this is causing you ( can not blame you for being worried).
  • Sherry Miller

Dee still thinking of you and praying soon you will have some answers or better yet this Tally will be on her way home.  I guess at this point after you have tried all you can to contact someone it is a matter of prayers and faith.  Hoping our world settles down soon for all the people and animals who have been living in such uncertainity.

  • Anne Pellette

I think every thing will work out ok.. its good at least the vet will communicate with you... at least he knows some one cares about the puppy.. we'll send prayers and setter ZEN that she comes home and is ok

    Love ya

    Anne

  • Barbara

Dear Dee! Unfortunately I was not online on Saturday and Sunday, but I was just thinking of you and Tally! The first this morning was to see if there are news in this sad story. You have spoken to the vet where she was left behind? Is Tally well?
If I only could help!!! Sorry, my English is not good enough to tell you all my feelings and thoughts, but I admire you and your work - you did the right thing (and I would do the same)!!! Please continue for Tally.

I pray that your Tally is soon safe and all will be good for her!!
    Love Barbara

  • Rita Pike

    Hi De

YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE I HOPE TALLY STAYS SAFE.  REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE OWNERS SAY YOU HAVE TO STAY WITH IT, MAYBE THEY ARE IN TRAUMA ABOUT THE WHOLE SITUATION - WE WOULD ALL OFFER OUR HELP IN ANY WAY. LOVE RITA

  • Barbara

Dear Dee! I am so glad that you found Tally! Once again, you did really a great job that you found her. Is she boarded now? On a flight to UK to her "owners"? Hope Tally is soon safe. Thinking of you. Love Barbara
  • Peter Hennig

    Hi Dee

If it were me in that saga I'd have been very grateful that someone was doing all they could to save my dog!!!

my little part of aus has not been affected by any of the disasters that have happened.

    cheers Peter

  • Delia Bryce

Dee, of course you care and that's the way it should be! Us owners especially the new to the breed ones like me appreciate the help and advice we get and understand why when we call saying we want a pup the breeder has to check us out too! We all want what's best for the pup.... So lets hope for a happy ending!

Thanks btw for your comments on my video I am besotted with my little tinker who in my eyes is growing up into a handsome young dog and most certainly keeps us on our toes! But has the sweetest and most loving character that I have ever came across in a dog..... So that gets him out of jams!

  • McBIRDY - Jean DUHANT

    Hi Dee,

Don't give up with Tally ! Try to have news of  her owners ! It will be a happy end to know that all members of this family are again together !!!!! As said before , you have so a great heart ! !  See you next week !

  • Peter Hennig

Hi Dee,thank you for the friend request, I'd be honoured. Cheers Peter
  • Peter Hennig

Hi Dee the affys are like rugs very warm on the bed of a night I'd like to claim I do all the grooming but my wife Susan would choke me,she wanted the affys so the hard work is done by her. Rahni is 9 months and is very easy at the moment when his coat changes at about one y/o they become a lot of work brushing at least every other night and weekly baths there were many nights before a show Susan was panicking trying to get the knots out of Azif's coat. His coat has finally settled it has taken about two years If you want a low maintainance dog DON'T buy an afghan
  • Shaun and Julie Nicholls

You asked what happened to gib and his coat, he bloated, fist sign 8 am, vets by 8.25, op 11.30, he had a full 360 twist, he was lucky.
  • Susan Mogony

Thanks Dee for you comment! I just wrote your last blog and I am sorry to hear that the buyers of your pup reacted that way. I hope your pup is doing oke allthough it's war!
  • Carmel Murphy

Great to see you too Dee!! I do hope all works out for your wee baby in Libya;o)

  • Peter Hennig

    Hi Dee
no it's not my plane my sister bought me a flying lesson and the airport is close by so we flew over our house
  • Barbara

Dear Dee, hope you and Jas, Saffy and Fin are well. May be any news from poor Tally? Take care Barbara
  • Peter Hennig

    Hi Dee

the flying was fun although I'm not interested in get a license to fly . We live on ten acres most of the trees in the photo are on our land we would have the most treed piece of land in the area, my sister lives directly behind us on about eight acres . The land on the other side of the road is a dairy farm about 1000 acres. It's a nice quiet area our summer was not all that hot this year there was only a few days that hit 40c deg we rarely see days in the peak of winter that get as cold as you get and we never see snow I have to drive about eight hours to get to snow and only for a brief period.

  • Peter Hennig

    Hi Dee

the heat does not seem to effect the dogs coats as far as we can tell. They do however lay around not spending to much energy, they try to find the coolest spot to lay. There would only be a few days of winter that drop to zero and that's usually in the very early hours of the morning before sun up. The biggest problem in summer is grass seeds and burrs in the dogs coats we have to check their feet a few times a week to make sure there are no seeds trying to dig in which is one of the reasons the affys don't play in the paddock. There is a heat policy out here for showing if the forecast is 37c the day of the show it either starts early or gets cancelled, has not happened to us yet .I don't know how they show in Queensland as the temp may only be 30c but the humidity can be 90% (unbearable!!!)     cheers Peter

  • Peter Hennig

I'm sorry to hear that news  Dee it is never easy to let them go ,  our second IS "Magic" had bone cancer we bought him about 15months more than the vet said we would have .In the end we said to him,  tell us when you've had enough, and eventually his eyes told us , he just looked so very tired, and simple things became too hard. That did not make the hurt any easier but it was  the right thing to do to put him at peace. my thoughts are with you Dee  life is so very tough sometimes
  • john murphy

YES brandy liked his comforts....food....(my food especially).....and trying to get him out of MY bed, always a challange :-)
  • Peter Hennig

Hope all keeps going well for you and Jas
  • Michelle Walsh

Hi Dee ! on behalf of Lego...many thanks for the birthday wishes :)

The tousled look...I like that, only it's not just his head Dee, it's the whole body :)

  • Michelle Walsh

HI Dee ! Looking forward to Jas's birthday pictures, I'm sure she'll be beautiful :) I don't trim Lego at all,(wouldn't know how) I've never shown him so he just goes 'au naturelle' :) besides could you imagine that hair in the show ring :) we'd have to create a new category or class just for him! bye for now xx
  • Michelle Walsh

Ah thanks for that Dee ! made me laugh...the moth class...I like it :) but he already looks like he's been attacked by a swarm of moths :) but if he was to change then I guess he wouldn't be Lego :) we'll just have to love our 'special wooly beasties' the way they are, mad hair and all !

    Nite nite x
