How long have you owned Irish Setters?
25 years
About Me:
first IS Sharla died at 15 years. second IS Cherie died Feb 2010 to cancer. Very sad. I was not going to get another IS but saw an add in the paper for pups and could not resist. We bought our Molly down from Queensland by plane. It is 1 year yesterday that she arrived and looked so cute in her crate at the airport. The staff were great and Molly travelled to our home some 45 kms from the airport without any problems. Called in at the vet on the way home to show the new pup off and together with the vet nurse named her Molly. She has become a huge part of our lives.

Hope Neil feels better soon.....can only imagine how upset you all have to be about their unwillingness to be reponsibile for damage they do while building next door....I would be taking my camera and documenting what my own property looked like right now before they have anymore accidents they will not fix. Do they have a noise level they have to stay under and a certain time they can start a job in AM?

Fighting fleas is not fun and having the cat to be careful of also makes it harder I would agree.  I can remember years ago they used to talk about flea dips here that groomers would do....but that would only fix the immediate problem of those alive on the dog and not those left in the dog's environment.  Hard to know how to deal with it.....I have not used a flea collar like they talk about on here since I had my first IS so wonder if that is something I should look into also.  Do the fleas die off in winter?  spraying the yard an option or not?  just so much to think about.  I can remember an oldtimer here telling me when we first got our Irish Setter and I was looking for flea/tick options " What is a dog without a flea to keep him worried? about as useful as a child who never asks why ?"  that was back in 73 and for some reason I always remember him telling me that ....sort of his way of saying fleas are always  part of a dog's life.....so don't get so hung up over them!   Now if a female had told me that I might have really thought about it even longer as I know I hate fleas!

Not too bad until it rains and gets all muddy....then the three of them romp and cover each other with major muddy messes!  is why fence is back up now as rains are due.
  • Sherry Miller

Mostly our ticks here carry Lyme or Rocky Mountain Fever but they can cause illness of the blood , and anemia if not taken care of....those are the common ones you would find here.
  • Sherry Miller

My Molly would have a fit if an opposum got near her food and she saw it....hope Molly is feeling better.  Did she keep you up ?  Hope that opposum soon leaves you all alone.  So now Molly is getting a wee bit nosier as the weather cools....we will have to see if my Molly slows down on her nosiness as our weather gets warmer.
  • Sherry Miller

You really have got them both misbehaving on you....hope Neil is well enough to go to his sister's with you....and if Molly has been acting right all day and has not been off her food I bet she will be alright for the wee bit you are gone.  I hate it when they are sick as they can not tell us so it is like a puzzle we piece together! hugs from Miss Molly to Baby Molly!
  • Sherry Miller

It is muggy and humid here tonight...windows open due to it being warm...storms overnight possible and then a warm summerlike weekend....afraid we are going right into summer without much spring weather here.  Molly outside tracking the owl she hears hooting.....she can get it down to direction but not see it as it is in yard behind us/  very frustrating for her as she would love to stalk it.  Was Neil home from work again today?

  • Sherry Miller

Eunice I just downloaded some pictures and when I look they show up same place yours do on your page....after you scroll down thru some comments and then the brief profile we filled out when we joined.  Is that what you see on my page?

Does Neil have upset stomach or respiratory?  so many virus's lately...and different forms of the flu even.  Hope he feels better soon,

  • Sherry Miller

Hope Neil is soon recovered and that you do not catch the bug from him.

Eunice I see a slide show of your Molly on your page and under it it says add photos...see if that works.  Think you can also add them from the main page at the top.  New pictures of sweet Molly?

  • Sherry Miller

    Eunice,

Midnight here and work in AM so heading to bed .  HOpe all goes well and you get to visit your sister inlaw....and that Molly does fine while you are gone.  Will check tomorrow night to see if you have new pictures posted.  Take care and enjoy the rest of your day!

  • Sherry Miller

Eunice right above this message box is your comment about the cyclone back in January and above it are your photo's of Molly....and they do a slide show on their own or I can click on view all and just small pictures of all your pictures will pop up///then I can either cick on one of them to view it or make a large( fullscreen slide show of all your pictures) .  Think that is what you were asking ?
  • Jo Ottinger

Thanks for the friend request, hope weather and everyone is ok
  • Jo Ottinger

Hi,  I only have Tiz and Hawk.  Scout passed in 08 and Lady passed just last year.
  • Sherry Miller

Hi Eunice...Miss Molly is sleeping but earlier today when I got home from work we spent  few hours on the patio watching her do her hunting rounds....this is one busy little lady when she is hunting....she never stops!   Funny but I understand about the pictures as I tend to take the same ones over and over...perhaps because the camera is handier inside?

How is Neil feeling?  and sounds like Baby Molly has bounced back from being sick?  how is her eye now?

I work in AM and then off two days....yay!  Ended up working my day off Friday so am ready to be lazy after tomorrow AM...

    Sherry

  • Sherry Miller

Hi...glad Neil is at least feeling well enough to go back to work and hope he is soon 100 % better.  We have a wee bit of time (month to 2 months) before we are in real summer here....so weather will see saw here for a while yet.  Molly loves the spring weather where it is not so humid and hot and especially loves it when it is windy here.  Silly dog wanted to go out other night when hail was coming down....is not afraid of storms at all and infact loves to watch them....nice change after my last Shilo who was petrified of storms.  Hope your Molly won't be fighting fleas anytime soon again....always seems like they come out of no where...none today and tomorrow here is a circus of them!
  • Sherry Miller

Eunice I swear they have an internal clock....messes our Molly up with the time change here as it stays light later....but she quickly adjusts to it...dinner she says is 5 pm for her....and she will let you know the time!  For us it is the car coming home that Molly listens for....with Neil taking the bus home and then walking it is definitely a time issue for her....her getting excited he is coming home soon is fun to know how much she misses him....and I bet if you were gone on a regular basis she would be pacing and waiting for you also.

Well we went from the 90 degrees over the weekend ( which is like a summer heat for us) to a high of 66 today and whole week is cooler , I was getting ready to get sandals out here !!

  • Carmel Stringfellow

    Hi Eunice,

just flicking around Es and noticed you have been having a few problems with Molly's eyes. Hope it is all resolved now.

And is Neil your husband? Is he on the mend too?

Annabelle is now on 71 points. Has picked up a couple of big BOB and is starting to beat Mac regularly. Looking really good after her season.

Nice to have the cooler weather!

    Cheers,

    Carmel

  • Sherry Miller

Funny how we always want different weather then we have !  Right now no heat or air conditioning needed but by end of week we will have to use heat at least at night....and last weekend we had air conditioning going!  Hope to at least get a month or two with no heat or airconditioning in use here....have fans to at  least keep air moving...though Molly thinks the one belongs strictly to her!  She is a bit spoiled as she does not like to be hot.

I sometimes wonder how I stood it for over a year without an Irish in our home....or perhaps that is part of the reason Alan and I both are just crazy over Molly is we had time to really miss having a dog in our home.  Had  to just let Molly out so she could do her nightly patroll of the backyard before she settles in for the night....almost like you could draw a map of what and where in the yard she searches first....it is also the time she will bring in any of her furbabies she left outside earlier...she has to locate them in the dark so it has to be from scent.  She just greets me at the back door carrying her baby or sometimes two of them she wants to bring back inside.  My boys never carried babies in and outside like Molly does.  They would carry a tennis ball in and out but never their soft furbabies.   Does Molly carry her soft babies around?

  • Sherry Miller

I do have FB just to keep up with nieces and nephews....what should I look up to see Baby Molly?  I would be proud of her also....and you should be just cause she is your baby!  Beautiful day here today...spend a good portion of it outside watching two cardinals do their courtship ritual....tried to get pictures but they just did not stay still.  Molly busy while I was watching the cardinals doing her bird shadow hunting....what a way to wile away a day. I do need to do a wee bit...to be honest a lot of cleaning tomorrow as I have been terribly lazy lately.  Did get in our walk tonight...Molly got into a stare down with a cat on next block...funny looking cat....main body is a very soft diluted grey stripe but all four legs and the tail have two solid black rings around them so that part looks like a raccoon!  Cat finally streched and stalked off ....we were across the street from the cat so no danger to either one of them.  Molly just happy to get her walk and to see the world from the end of her leash just seems to thrill her no end....adventures around every corner for her....stalking robins on lead....I get to go stalking with her which is really sort of fun as she really gets into her stalking and sneaking up on them stance.
  • Sherry Miller

Cardinals are bright red birds here and robins have orange/red breasts...both sort of favorite birds here at feeders and in yards.

You really made me laugh with that tv comment...ongoing debate here as I say Molly would watch nature tv....and she has stalked turkeys on a hunting show on there once and Alan saying she would not watch tv while we are gone.  Wonder how our Molly's got so spoiled!  Does Molly have a favorite show ?

  • Sherry Miller

Think I will try that flipping thru the channels for Molly...drive Alan crazy as he is usually the channel flipper here.  Good that she does find some comfort from it while you are gone....our Molly seems to sleep in chair by the front door waiting for us to come home....too lazy to get out of chair til we are actually back in the house with her.....then she comes streching out of chair wagging her tail with one of her babies in her mouth.
  • Sherry Miller

found the Hanrob site////now to find wee baby Molly???
  • Sherry Miller

Found the Hanrob site and brochures but not the rightone with Molly,  Glad she behaved and enjoyed her tv time...I took Molly with me today while doin some running....sent Angie into stores as I do not leave her in car alone. Just finished our walk....her adventure tonight was trying to get some guys to let her play with their basketball....she was really wanting to try playing with it ...think she thought it was like her water polo ball here at home.  She was not quite sure of that shooting basket deal though.
  • Sherry Miller

We mostly feed Molly inside here....just her watermelon outside in summer ...though I will put her water bowl outside .  She is fussing right now that she wants out but trying to keep her in for a wee bit longer as there was a toad hopping around the patio.  One setter eating a toad is enough for me...I tried to find it but could not so hoping it is making it's way out of the yard.  Just another nature moment I would like to avoid here.  Seems like there are a lot of those lately.  Does Molly try to sneak up or stalk the magpies?
  • Sherry Miller

Molly here stalks them  ....like they can not see her coming!  funny to watch as she moves like clockwork but very very slowly so you almost can not see her moving forward.  That would be a toad in our yard...we do have frogs also that live by and in our lakes, ponds and rivers.  Some of our toads secrete a foul tasting toxin if picked up in the mouth...our Shannon had picked one up and when it released the toxin instead of spitting it out silly boy swallowed....one sick dog and one big vet bill but after that we relocated toads out of our yard,

  • Sherry Miller

Hi Eunice...finally we have same weather on same day!  We had rain here today also....Molly cuddled up and only went out when she just had to ....tiptoed around puddles though.   Tonight I was being lazy but she was not having any part of that.,....she can really nag you!  First it was cuddling up and being extra sweet to me....then it was flipping my hand up and nudgeing me to get up....then it was little ruffs at me...telling me what she wanted !  then she fetched her leash...I was not getting out of her walk!  We can not say walk or leash here but have to use the word promenade!  so far she has not figured that one out yet.
  • Sherry Miller

We are lucky here with Molly as so far she has not had any accidents in house since first day she was home.  She will try to avoid going out when it is pouring but if she needs to go will sneak down under the eaves to try to stay dry and out of puddles.  We have two rugs down to help catch some of the muddy pawprints and her foot towel....we get that long suffering look from her while we dry her paws.
  • Laura Bayless

Hi, thanks so much for the kind words about Sadie. I was reading your profile and wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss. When are you expecting your pup?
  • Sherry Miller

Just some quick thunderstorms here...wee bit of hail..states south of us seemed to really get hit on this round.  It is storm season here ...we do have sirens outside that alert us to dangerous storms...plus tv and radios to keep us informed.  Worse for me seem to be the ones that come in middle of night.  Molly had a little adventure this morning....Angie left early and forgot to lock the front door.....it is windy here today so door blew open and Molly went for a little walk.....I woke up to house feeling cold and no Molly....threw on coat and some sheoes and took the car to go find her.  Did not have to go far as she was on block behind us....captured and on leash and with two gentlemen who we had met when we walked last year.....they could not remember her name but knew she was the Cardinal DOG......that made me laugh!  She went right up to them wanting to play with their golden retriever at the one house and they were going to walk her back this way until they found where she belongs.  We noticed the other day that Molly will not come near our car or get into it when it has been started and again today I had to turn the car off for her to get into it.  Told Alan she is just so friendly that it worries me plus I do not ever want her out running off leash.  I have the remedy for that door and will try to talk Alan into a storm door so at least two chances before she escapes here.
  • Carmel Stringfellow

    Hi Eunice,

Annabelle is fine. Had a false pregnancy and moped around for a few weeks and didn't show as well as she normally does. Back on form now and is on 78 points!

    Carmel

  • Sherry Miller

Hi Eunice...we are fine here....cool here this pm but no rain.  Worked this pm and then we met some old friends for dinner.  Work in AM tomorrow so busy weekend again.  Molly is happy we are back....Alan only gone the three hours but she acted like he was gone a week.....all over him for hugs and petting. I got greeted but not like he does if we both are gone.  Angie not back yet but will talk to her  about making sure that door is locked from now on....do not like Molly out in front unless we are with her....plus she is just too friendly to everyone......everyone is her friend and she expects them to make over her...that diva syndrone she has going on.  Hate that uhoh where is my baby feeling.  You know it well it seems ....most of mine got out a wee bit and usually I am right behind them .....just Molly is different as my boys just needed to hear my car start up and they were on their way to get a ride ....Molly will not go near a car that is running so she will not come to me unless car is off.
  • Sherry Miller

I think Molly was out about 15 minutes before I was after her....and I do think she would have headed home but it is just I do not like her out like that ever!  She headed across our street and down thru the common ground which leads to the street behind us....and she did know both gentlemen from last year....but it was their dogs she was really wanting to play with....I think she thought they would just open the gate to let her come in to play like she does with the two girls next door.  Car issue can be a good one...least I know someone would have a hard time picking up Molly if she was out running as she will not go by any car that has engine going.  Her quirk which can be a very good one....now a motor cycle might be different as she perks up when our young neighbor next door starts his up or comes home on it so we think that at some point in her earlier life there was someone special who rode a motorcycle....perhaps her owner's son who we think played with her as her reaction to them has always been an all perky one like here the fun starts!  We will never know and it is just one more of the mysteries of Molly.
  • Sherry Miller

Like how you redid your profile....and happy gotcha day to Molly and you.  Cute how you came up with Molly for her name and doesn't it just suit her to  a tee?  It is a name I have always loved....wanted to name one of our girls Molly Elizabeth but lost out to Alan both times.....so when our first IS that was female came into our family I got the honor of naming her!  I did think of Maggie Mae (Rod Stewart song) and Miss Kitty but knew from the beginning I was finally going to have my Molly!
  • Sherry Miller

Eunice you know exactly my worry.....I am sorry you had to go thru that with Sharla....so scarey for all of you.  I try very hard to be sure none of my dogs run,,,,between cars, getting into something they shouldn't, worry that someone will pick them up , getting lost and just the fact that MY DOGS are not supposed to run wild!  Molly is allowed off lead out in front IF Alan or I are right with her and paying attention to her.  Snow pictures were mostly taken in front yard that night.  Molly has done really well with front yard privelege if we are with her...she knows one paw into the street gets her put in back yard and she loses front yard  so if we are there with her she has been really fantastic about staying within boundaries we have set for her.  I can just see her looking at that open front door this morning....but also bet it did not take long before she decided to walk out it....and not much longer after that before she was off to explore.  We had one that climbed fences but never got very far as once he climbed over it he would sit and cry for us to come get him.  None have ever dug out or jumped ....one jumped twice but seemed like he could not figure out how he ended up in neighbors yard....and like Shannon he just cried til we came to get him.   Had a few adventures when someone opened or left open a gate ( the golf ball incident at the golf coarseI and Pebbles taking Shilo for a walk one day and coming home iwthout him when they were both old. I walked for miles til I found him

Eunice I did ask both my daughters if they would ever want to use Molly for a future possible grand daughter's name before I named her Molly.  lol....do you add things to her name...ours is Miss Molly McGee and then Alan added McDolly to that mess....I call her Miss Molly or Molly Dolly a lot or Molly, me darlin which always makes Alan laugh.
  • Sherry Miller

I like that Molly Moos....I was just going to tell you good night as it is almost 1 am and I want to hop into church before work here tomorrow.  Have a great day and give Molly Moos a hug from her USA Molly!  Hey I had to be sure they were not wanting to use the name Molly.....as I know they would not use it if I called my IS Molly!  My Molly sound asleep by the locked front door....but will follow me to bed in just a second.  Take care,
  • Carmel Stringfellow

Yep, 100 oints. She should be there well and truly before I mate her next season.
  • Sherry Miller

Hi Eunice....hope you did not feel any shaking and that your family is all alright.  That small bump on Molly could be a lot of things...is it really small like a pimple with a whitish discharge?  can be as simple as a bite she got outside to a blocked pore.or a small sebaceous (spelling?) cyst....just watch it and I bet it goes away ...don't worry too much unless you see it growing ...then it's off to the vet for her!

We found our first tick of season here on Molly....so went over her really well but only the one so far.  Just thankful she does not mind my checking her over like my one old gentleman did.  Molly really active tonight after I got home from work....we had dinner on patio and watched her hunt in the yard and then played fetch with her before she had her walk.  Alan said she was out for about three hours this AM but came in for a long afternoon snooze ....what a life to have!

  • Sherry Miller

It does make you stop and think with so many nature dramas going on around the world.

I had one of those on Molly last year on her back leg...seemed like it was there forever....naturally once you find it you keep checking on it and it just seems to catch your fingers anytime you pet that area.  I just found something the same size ( pin, pencil lead etc) to use for future comparisons to be sure it did not grow.  Hard when we lose a loved pet to any disease ...and fears of a repeat with our next one is hard to avoid.  Sometimes I think our girls just want to tell us to calm down and let them be DOGS! iinstead of our little darlings!  though of course if it comes to spoiling , new treats or toys or something they like then they want to be our little darlings!

  • Sherry Miller

Now that sounds just about like our Miss Molly here....nosey and has to see and know everything and one around her.  Tonight walking with her and she literally begs everyone to pet her....wants to even walk into gates not normally open to get pets from the people inside.  Three teenage boys hanging out she loved having fuss over and pet her....she was trying her hardest to get them to play chase even though she was on lead.  Molly was lying in the grass on all fours( that alert way they lie) and stamping her paws to try to get them to play....they just laughed as they thought she was being such a clown.)  Just fun to watch them watch the world around them and try to figure out what is going on inside their heads!
  • Sherry Miller

Hope those workmen get paid for the two hour drive at the insurance company's dime!  Here a lot of companies charge for drive time as part of job....and ouch at the cost of gas for those guys! (we are at $3.79 a gallon right now ).   We heard those same skinny comments about Molly over and over.....and she has gained some weight these last six months....looks right where I would like to keep her weight wise right now...will let you know after we see vet where she is at .

In process of making a cheesecake right now...waiting for crust to cool so can fill it and do the first baking.....Alan's birthday tomorrow so he requested my sugarfree cheesecake.  We do have Molly's doggie icecream for her so she gets included in all celebrations.

  • Sherry Miller

Anzac DAy?  So you all normally get Good Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the Monday off?  Afraid here for us I am working Saturday PM....retail for you!  Decided to take off next year though and let someone else work the holiday.  I am off on Friday....and we are lucky in that our mall is not open on Easter Sunday.....Angie will work Easter AM but then we will have a late brunch here....ordered my ham today but will make a fruit salad, potato casserole and an egg casserole and some asparagus....have not decided on dessert yet.  We will dye eggs here .....and try to make the traditional black egg....been doing that for 22 years now as Alan turned 40 years old on Easter way back then!  Easter basket for Angie will have a wee bit of her favorite candy's and Molly will hopefully do an Easter treasure hunt outside if it is nice....we did that last year with her and she had a blast....as did we laughing at her.  Have a few new toys for her...need to pick up a stuffed bunny for her ....new bone, balls and a Lamb Chop (stuffed dog toy) which squeaks like crazy so she will love that....my excuse to spoil Molly but also clean out some of her toy box.  This was always my favorite family holiday with my girls....coloring the eggs, Easter Dresses....and hats, Easter Egg hunts and just spring and I loved making EAster baskets for them....wish my grandsons were closer but can not change that.  So Molly will have to indulge my wish to hide things this year....Angie absolutely refuses to do a scavenger hunt anymore which I started doing when my girls hit their teen years here.....What are you going to be doing with all that time off?  any special plans?

  • Sherry Miller

Will email you cheesecake recipe....Alan is diabetic so have tried to redo some of his favorite desserts for him.  Do you all have Splenda Granular there?  Doggie Ice Cream I cheat and buy premade so far....have not found a recipe for one here yet.  Nice that it comes in those little cups like we used to get at birthday parties when we were kids....so just open and give to her.  She loves it,,,,I do have to be careful as I keep vanilla ice creams in same sort of container for myself ....otherwise I would never get icecream!  Almost ate one of Molly's one day.  Pack of six for me will last me over a month so I do not overdo it but sometimes it is just a nice treat.
  • Sherry Miller

Alan is an Aries ( like me)....got the cake recipe for puppies.  Emailed you the cheesecake recipe....hoping you can buy Splenda there. Let me know.
  • Sherry Miller

I wish I could get this retired guy here (Alan!!) to pick up a paint brush.  I just always have done the hard boiled Easter eggs...so easy to do and so pretty....kids just had to try to make Dad a black egg the year he turned 40 on Easter and had so much fun trying to get the egg black that it became a favorite tradition here.  Egg salad for Easter Monday every year is also my family tradition.
  • Sherry Miller

Is Neil hitting one of those 0 milestones?

I can just see Molly sitting on your lounge...was she sitting with her front feet on the floor by any chance?  and that guy asking her what she wanted from the shop....should have told him a nice piece of lamb for dinner!  Sounds like she is really starting to mature and develop her own personality....making sure they know this is her house but also getting right friendly with those men! I swear that is a female dog for you!  Males were gaga and worse over me here so it is that old opposites attract thing here.

It would be a blast to have our Molly's together....have a feeling they would love each other to the point that we don't exist...running and playing and just being goofy.  Think of the lovely pictures we could get ....by the way did you see the "boys just want to have fun" pictures in the blog section? if not take a look ...and I dare you not to laugh.....and if you are like me I can just about hear your next thought!

  • Sherry Miller

We love fish here...have been really bad last few weeks on Friday's hitting different churches fish fries ( cause I did not want to cook).  Here the Easter Bunny is a big thing with the little ones ...lots of organized Easter Egg hunts ( even ones at night for adults ....and some for dogs even!)...Easter baskets for Easter morning from the bunny.  I will cheat and if I can find my favorite coconut and dark chocolate Easter eggs I will be really happy....looked at two stores today for them but none at either....so will stop and look on way home from the dentist tomorrow .  That sounds fun going to a Dog Show ..especially if Irish Setters are going to be in it ..and some you might know!  Will Molly have to stay home?
  • Sherry Miller

Do you make your own hot cross buns?  Afraid I am only one here who loves them...my Grandma used to always make them for my Dad ....and I learned to love them as a child.  So I cheat and buy one or two here for the memory I think.
  • Sherry Miller

Hoping for some time this summer...Cam mentioned coming home in June for her 10 year class reunion but not sure she can take time off for it from school....almost done with her cosmetolgy school.  Still working around family weddings etc to find a time that works for all of us.
  • Sherry Miller

Your show sounds like a country fair here...we also have an annual state fair in late August here....and no freebies at either!!  Everything it seems is so buy buy buy anymore....are your shops open on Sunday there?
  • Sherry Miller

uhoh!! so Molly wants to help paint with her wonderful tail?  silly baby.

Not a state holiday here for either Good Friday or Easter....even a lot of public schools have class on Friday....and some malls are open on Easter Sunday ....just glad mine is not.  Business as usual here it seems for whole weekend for all too many places.  I hate that shops are open on Sunday now....when we were kids Sunday was church, dinner with family and then special family time ....and I think we have lost those chances to build those memories in our families now.  I used to refuse to shop on Sundays....and now I end up working them to often!
