Home for Irish Setter Lovers Around the World

Welcome, Adele!
How exciting to live in Australia! My husband and I live on the East Coast of Canada (Nova Scotia) and share our home with a 13 year old Irish Setter mix, as well as 4 female Irish Setters from 9 months to 7 years old. We show our girls a bit but their preferred days are spent playing in the field, swimming, playing with scent work and more. :)
This site seems pretty quiet, likely due to the various social media sites, but don't let that stop you! :) I am so sorry for the loss of your Alfie. 9 years seems so young. :( Please ensure your new puppy comes from health tested parents (NOT to imply that Alfie didn't!) For instance, my breeding pairs are all tested for:
CLAD (Canine Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency); DM (Degenerative Myelopathy); GLD (Globoid cell leukodystrophy) Irish Setter type, also known as Krabbe disease; Hip Dysplasia; PRA-rcd1 and PRA-rcd4 (Progressive Retinal Atrophy); and Thyroid. We have also recently added testing for VonWillebrands Disease primarily because it's included in my DNA test package. Also you should ask and feel you have been answered honestly, if any dogs in your puppy-to-be's lines have suffered from bloat or epilepsy.
There are some very good Irish Setter breeders in Australia. I would find out about any dogs shows you could attend and speak with breeders there. Also look for your closest breed club. My oldest girl and her daughter (the pup I kept and is now 2 years old) have Gwyndara lines in their pedigrees. Their website is Gwyndara » Breed Standard Australia
I am not sure if they are breeding any more, but they should be able to guide you to a reputable breeder if they are no longer showing/breeding. Hopefully, there are others on here to guide you as well. :)
