You should really try mushing with your dogs, it's so much fun.
With regards to the walking on the lead your dogs should be fine if they're trained right.
The dog should only associate pulling when wearing their running harness.
We walk the dogs in harness aswell, so it can take them a bit of time to settle into their walks and know they can't pull.
