Any advice would be welcome.

Arthur is seven months now and is free all the time except him and the other dogs are restricted to our other living room and the kitchen at night. They have two leather settees to lie on and big fleeces to keep them cosy.

I got up this morning to find that Arthur had chewed through the carpet,it is by the doorway(open) and is an area about 3"x6" .I was non too pleased but the carpet does need replacing.( it certainly does now!)This is the first time he has done this and he really is not a destructive puppy.

We are going away in three weeks time and there is nowhere secure to put Arthur except loose in,what is, a large carpeted throughout, flat. This is causing Joan and myself some worry. We have even considered kennelling him but we want him with us and we don't like kennelling our dogs after a bad experience some years ago.

We have decided that he will have to come into the bedroom with us and we will have to shut him in with us.

Are there any other options ?

You could always take a soft crate with you and try him in that.

Hi Howard

all our dogs roam around the house at night, occasionally one will play up so the problem dog gets crated of a night for a couple of nights this seems to sort it out .If you are going away with them a crate is a good way of keeping them close and controlled. We recently camped at a show with the dogs in their crates and us in a tent right next to them they were a little spooked at first but settled very quickly

CRATE
I have had a couple pups over the years who started to work a corner of the carpeting.  I soaked that with bitter apple and bitter lime, one mouthful of that and mine never went back to it again.  Just thought if you make the carpet taste horrible the dog might never try that again.

Thanks for all the advice, unfortunately we are travelling by train so a crate is out of the question.

I will try making the carpet taste horrible. My dogs hate Lavendar oil so a few drops of that might work.

Arthur was left loose again last night and there was no further chewing so,I hope,it was a 'one off'.

Thank you all again.

yes, folding crates seems to be easy to carry (although I never used one so far..)

Oberon once tried to chew some cooking books -while left alone in the kitchen.. They were in a bookcase close to his bed, and low and easy to reach.. Following the advise of a friend who has a labrador, I put some tabasco (chilli paste) one the book covers and shelves and he never did again, ha ;)

(my friend, with the puppy labrador, used to put chilli paste /tabasco on the chairs legs and furniture and he stopped any attempt of chewing in a snap;)

a bit difficult with a carpet, i admit, but it worked :)

Oh dear been thro' that one now into other things!! Yes I agree a soft or  metal crate , he probably won't like it if he's not been used to one but it could've been a lot worse like an electrical cable.
