Snowy start of European setterspring no surprise

Spring means top sports for working Irish setters.

Around start of the season usually the European championship for working red setters is held. This year organized by the Irish Setter Club Deutschland (Germany ) on March 24th in Sarry, France.

Friday a preceding Semaine Setter Irlandaise (Irish Setter Week) organized by the Red Club France started. Highlighting under more a derby for youngsters, where rules are not as strict as for grown ups.

Judges are out to select youngsters with the best style as described in the Official description of the working style of the Irish Red Setter Club in Ireland. This means under more tireless high nosed galloping.

There are CACIT-trials (the international working championship) from Switzerland, France and Germany in coming days. On the last day, national teams for the EC are presented with flags and hymns. Usually this is the place for photographers to “catch” them all.

Experts think there is a good chance for French team members of winning the EC 2008. There are quite a few spectacular younger red setters, like Apache. Last year the EC held in Italy, was won by Italian Gerri.

Partridge is the only feathers that count in spring trials. So a point on pheasants does not count. This makes it extra difficult for cultures where partridge is on the decline, like the Netherlands and Germany.

For all participators weather conditions as predicted are far from ideal for a EC. It seems even a snowy start of spring will not be a surprise.

I hope you will keep us updated Henk... and I'd love to see some pictures of the dogs in action - rather than the usual 'team with flags' which is all we usually get to see in our swiss setter magazine...
