REMEMBER TOODYAY WITH LUPIN? WELL, TOODYAY BURNS!!

Very sadly a terrible bushfire has burned through the historic area of Toodyay, destroying an estimated 20, possibly 40 homes, and injuring 4 people. Yesterday's temperatures soared to over 46 degrees there, and with very strong winds, the fires escalated.
Our forecast for the past two days, has been "Catastrophic" fire conditions for our areas, something which puts such fear into us all.
Thankfully the temperatures have eased to the 20's, lessening the risks, and allowing the firefighters to bring under control fires that have been unmanageable.
In Australia, many of the firefighters are volunteers, something, my husband John has been, for nearly twenty years. It is always that terrible fear when they are called out, and they are to indeed be commended for their courage and dedication to our communities.
You will remember that Toodyay is where Dr Phil resides, and has his veterinary practice. This is where Lupin was successfully inseminated with the frozen semen from Sweden.Thankfully the town itself is relatively safe, and Dr Phil lives over the other side of town, away

from the fires.

People do have survival and evacuation plans, and when put to the test, hope that it all works. Of course each fire situation changes - the severity, the weather and wind conditions, directions of the fire which could affect getting off of a property, and in our situation with a boarding kennel and our own dogs, just how many dogs and sometimes puppies there would be to move. The logistics are enormous!
We have been put to the test once, and close, on two other occasions.
So far, John and I have chosen to stay and defend, but I can tell you it is VERY scary, and that for me has just been waiting. John has fought in some pretty big fires and the stories make your hair stand on end.Fire, for me, is one of the most frightening of the elements.
