How common is this hot spot? I thought it was mostly retrivers ho could get it, but this summer it´s the second time one of my dogs had it. It seem´s like it is very painful for the dog.

I have only had hot spots on one of my setters, and that was when I kept a puppy that CONSTANTLY seemed to bite her mothers neck. So I did get this hot spot on the bitch, but is was solved very quickly by keeping the spot clean and some penicillin (or other antibiotic).
My first pug had this three times in his life.
The same there...went away quickly.
I never felt as if the dogs where in great pain. To me it appeared more itchy than anything.
I took her to the vet. and she got antibioticpills and cream to put on the area. I was a little worried because it was very close to her ear, but luckily it healed very quickly! The vet. told me that that area who is infected is very painful and it aces more than it itch. I had a big problem when I was shaving the area because it really did hurt.
