Exclusively Setters

Home for Irish Setter Lovers Around the World

In a previous discussion, on more serious health issues, the subject of entropian came up, but was dismissed by some as a minor issue as it wasnt life threatening! But, my question is, why is it still in the breed, as I would have thought if affected dogs and bitches were not bred from, the problem would have gone from the breed by now? Or does it pop up from generations further back? I have two setters who did have entropian(operated on) but never used for breeding because of the problem!

We are new to this site, my name is Jenny and I am the wife of Tommy.  My husband does not wish to continue with his blogs so I hope you don't mind if I say something.

We have 10 rescue Irish and they have been badly treated.  They have come from different places but they are getting better.

We did have one poor little bitch who had a litter but they couldn't get her to breed again.  When we saw her we couldn't believe it, her head was swollen, she had no eyes.  We took her straight away to the vets.  Tommy couldn't stop crying, he just hugged her to him, she stank, she was filthy.  The vet put her to sleep, she had entropian she was in agony it was pitiful.

This was when we were living overseas, we went back to the kennels with the police and their vets.  A lot of the dogs were put to sleep the others taken away.   Tommy was threatened by the owner but thankfully he didn't know where we lived because I think he would have set our house on fire, he was very angy.   He lost his way of living.

Entropian can be quite nasty and of course a dog needs to have an anaesthetic to have the problem fixed!  Unfortunately the first Vet who did my first dog's op made a total mess of it and therefore she needed to get the eye done a second time, so a second anaesthetic!! Thankfully she only had entropian in one eye!!

At what age did you notice the entropian Malkie, as it  appeared around 4 to 5 months in my case?

Photos of my two setters who had this horrible condition and after the Op. to correct entropian!

oh my god.. i hope the operation(s) was successfull for both, in the end :((

Yes Silvia, the second Op. for the bitch was successful and I got a different Vet to do the other dog and she did a beautiful job first time!!!!

Did you have the puppies or did you buy them, did you tell the person who had them and their father?  The photographs are sad and happy, pretty puppies.

I bred the pups myself and yes I did mention it to the stud dog owner!

Good to hear that Ruby got sorted ;o)
