Home for Irish Setter Lovers Around the World
I haven't posted a discussion lately but we are confused by Cash lately.
As a young pup we did his nails weekly without fail. Little bits often is the way we do it so it never becomes a big deal. We dremol and clip, sometimes one or the other. He would actually sleep or yawn through it and lay nicely in my husband's arms. We were overjoyed since Dublin screamed during it and became so stressed out eventually I had to let the groomer do him since it was ruining his relationship with my husband and he was afraid of him touching him. So now Cash is a year old. Suddenly he is freaked out about having his nails done. Three of us tried to coddle, coax and hold him steady and it became too much for the dog and us last night. We gave up with only the front paws done. He will now dart away if he thinks I am coming at him for brushing, ear cleaning or anything like that. Any ideas why he would become so difficult when brushing was one of his favorite things? Nails might have to again now be done by the groomer because I don't want to upset the dog to the degree he was last night. I have tried treats with it, didn't work. Tonight after a muddy romp he had a good bath and he was okay with it. Even let me do his ears without much trouble. I can't wait to hear what you think and your stories about your trials with these necessary things. Come to think of it, he is doing the dart away from me when I go to leash him up lately too.
It is like a fun game to get ever so close to me then run off to hopefully be chased which I refuse to do. I am much more patient then him and I just wait for him to give it up and then move in. Maybe it's an age thing, I just don't know.
