Site Issues

Hi Everyone - Several people have mentioned experiencing issues with the site. I have sent two in to Ning Support be worked:

- One member can log in but people can't see her in the search results or respond to her posts.

- There are issues with discussions showing (initial posts) and replies.
I will be curious if this shows.

Both have been sent into Ning support for resolution. If you see any others, please let me know.

I'm not sure if this issue is already discussed, but I find this form of the forum rather hard to follow, I mean, the tree that speards all over the place... Sorry, if I cannot explain myself clearly enough!!!

It would be easier if it would be possible to quote the parts that you would comment and the latest input would always come last. Now one has to follow different strings of the conversation and finally there is not enough levels to make yet another comment to the specific path you'd like to add your comment to.

I hope somebody understood what I'm trying to say here..............! :-))

Hi Johanna - Thanks for your message. I have seen several different forum structures on the web. I think the way this works is you can do one of two things once a discussion is created:

1) Respond to a specific post by hitting the 'REPLY TO THIS' link right under
the post you want to respond to. That way, readers will know exactly what
content to tie your response/post to and it is easier to follow the collective
stream of consciousness of our community.
2) Respond to the discussion in general by enter you comment/post in the
big text box at the top of the page and hitting 'ADD REPLY'.

In the first one, you are replying directly to a prior post or person. In the second one, you are offering a general comment or adding thoughts that are not necessarily tied to a prior post.

Hi Gennadi - Sorry you have experienced issues here. I have seen site issues that specific users have reported and Ning is usually pretty good about resolving them. If you see any in the future, please feel free to reply to this thread and I will raise it to Ning.

Yes, I get the idea all right, but I just don't like this kind of solution. :-) I think that the "side comments" usually become rather long and that easily disturb the original conversation. Besides that if you do not constantly follow the whole conversation it is rather hard to find the latest additions as you have to go through all the pages (if it is a lively conversation with lots of pages). JMHO

Hi Johanna - I can't argue with your points, they are very valid. I think there are pros and cons to both approaches and it is really a no-win situation for Ning. If they had all the comments listed serially, some people would be upset that they can't easily respond to a particular/specific comment.

Hello Gene - I have found by clicking on the reply by..... in the Last Activity colomn, it takes you directly to it, where ever it appears in the tread. Might it be possible to list the last 2 or 3 postings to make it easier to find them, or is there a way of having a link in the Last Activity colomn to view all or say the last 24 hours, reply by.... activity in time order.

Hi Rosie - Creating the site itself took me maybe 10 minutes. With Ning, it was very easy to create. I did promote it initially and it kind of took off from there thanks to all of the great members.

I will pass this suggestion along to Ning, but I don't control what enhancements they make to the site.

Hello Gene,I actually have no problem whatsoever (so far).
But I would like to make a suggestion...
I quite often comment on photographs on this site.
At times I go back looking at the same photograph again, finding that someone has commented on the comment I have made.
Now there is no box to tick if you want information regarding this.

Just as well as getting information about further comments on a blog/discussion, I would think it would be great if I could be notified of added comments on a photograph too.

Once again I have to say "Thank you" for starting this Gene...are you not amazed at the way this site lives its own life? And at the number of photos and members...to me this is pretty amazing! Well done!

Hi Ursula - Glad that you haven't had issues so far. Your suggestion is a great one and I am shocked that they haven't come out with something like that. It seems that they have it for most everything else.. I will pass it along.

And yes, I am amazed at this site. I am glad that it continued to grow when my work load essentially doubled 18 months ago and I stopped promoting it. I don't contribute as much as I would like due to my work schedule, but I do try and check out the site a couple times a week if only to look. I love all the photos and stories people submit. It is a great way to put a smile on my face.

hi Gene,
i don't like the new system that all the comments made are shown on the front page. takes to much space. liked the previous style better. if anyone is interested in the comments made (on photos or personal pages), they can just go in to the personal sites and check.
and since it was implemented, the RSS chanel does not work...
i assume it was a ning development, centrally. but maybe you appreciate a bit of feedback anyway :-)
