One now: Glenvarna Fire And Ice At Hooley (Mulligan)
How long have you owned Irish Setters?
37 years
About Me:
My first dog was a much loved Corgi called Bryn.
My previous Irish were:
Kerrigan Amber Dream (Oliver)
Twoacres Joker The Hooley (Flynn)
Twoacres Fergus (Fergus)
Cymbeline Fallon By Hooley (Geordie)
I taught 4 -7 year olds for 17 years and often used to take my first Irish Setter into school. He loved being with the children and they loved being with him. The favourite place to be at story time was next to Oliver!! He was affectionately known as Ollie and many generations of children grew up thinking of Irish Setters as Ollie dogs!!
I got into showing when I retired. Oliver died suddenly only two months after I stopped teaching and as the house was so empty I just knew that I had to have another Irish. I was lucky enough to get a puppy from the late Mrs June Coates (Twoacres). He was Twoacres Joker The Hooley, (Flynn). We went on a steep learning curve together as we found our way around the show world. I very quickly became hooked on this new past time and an obsession began. Over the years I have learnt so much and met so many wonderful friends, all through a shared interest and love of this magnificent breed.
I am on the B Judging list for Irish Setters in the UK and have also judged English Setters, Gordon Setters and Irish Red & White Setters at Open Show level. I was secretary of the East Midlands Social Region of the ISBC in the UK for 14 years and a committee member for 18 years.
As well as showing when possible, I like writing, so often contribute items to the ISBC Newsletter. I also have a particular interest in health matters concerning the breed.
hi michelle many thanks for writing to me .yes its so very sad about layla and its very upsetting seeing her as she is now.this week has been terrible.we went to clumber park where weve been several times and she knows it well yet even off lead she just stayed behind us.when weve come home shes been really struggling even in our home and garden.weve tried to carry on normal and treat her normal but now i know we cant.to be honest i didnt know what to expect or how a blind dog can cope but its going to be a lot harder than i thought.its heart breaking it really is but well manage(its a learning curve)and we love her dearly and sometimes she does play on emotions(shes forever asking for treats)and she knows ill give in.
i think if shed have been a much older dog id have probably coped but its just so unfair that such a young dog has this horrible disease she cant do the things that normal setters do at her age because shes not got that confidence of a sighted dog.
and lucy the boxer.she was my sons she came to stay while they had their second child 3 years ago and never went home.shes really good with layla and very protective of her. lyn layla and lucy
hi michelle yes the other senses are a lot stronger now shes listening out all the time and shes smells her way around shes also getting very keen if she hears a strange voice she barks like mad and her bark is a lot gruffer than it was, before it has just been a yappy bark.
Dear Michelle!
Thank you for kind and comforting words, surely means a lot to me. And this lovely, lovely poem, just love it...
Kind Regards//KristinaXXX

Hello Michelle,
thank you for visiting my page! If you wish to see our photos, please visit our website www.irskysetr.ic.cz, where there are hundreds of them. The page is in Czech, but I am sure you will find them easily.
Best regards from Katerina and Everdene Irish Setters
Nice meeting you and I like the oldies on your side! It is still amazing how the Irish Setters changed over the years in type I think. The characters are still the same!
Hi Michelle
Thank you for your kind welcome to this site. Honestly since signing up I have rarely been off of it!!! There are so many people to chat to and so many photos to look at and admire, it is just never ending.
I shall put a few more photos on my page when I can find my memory stick. About a year ago we updated and bought a new computer, I put all my documents, pictures etc etc onto a memory stick, put it somewhere safe, and yes, you've guessed it, I cannot find it not for love nor money!!
Best wishes
Hilary
Hi there, Michelle,
Glad to meet another setter owner... I must say that I am in tears after reading your tribute to Fergus, as the deaths of my Killeen and Nellie are still so fresh in my memory. They were mother and daughter and I lost them both on June 22nd to a pneumonia that just could not be halted, desptie everything they had at Tufts U. Vet School. I have just one girl now, my 10-yr-old Fionnula.
Pat
Saffy says thanks Aunty Michelle and she is at this moment trying to give her mum the run around, shall I have them now....no.....but thanks for the birthday wishes...
Just to get them into the world is going to be great for me, and I must say for her as well....I think that she will be relieved just to be able to get up and down without a problem. Well I think that she SHOULD have them by Monday..please god.....
All the best Dee and the girls
Hi Michelle,
thank you for your message. I saw the pictures of your dogs, they are just
beautiful, they got a lot of hair. Zara doesn´t have too much hair which I´m little sad about. She is just 2 years old, do you think she can still get more hair or is it just the genes?
We´ve been on couple of dog shows - we got excellent degree but no title.
I work with her a lot in hunting shows, there we got one title:)
She´s got a great character and she became a very special member of my family.
Salü Michelle
Thank you for your words of welcome. I'm practice the photos loading. You has beautiful photos on your page. Sorry, my english is not so good.
Best wishes.
Stephanie
Hi Michelle,
Thank you for your kind words. It was great to visit your site and see your beautiful photos. When I finished teachers college I taught autistic children so I can relate to Ollie in the classroom. How lucky you were to be able to create that situation & even luckier to retire and do what you do. As I was reading I thought what a wonderful day you must have on the Irish Setter Rescue Walk. Great to have you as a friend.
Kind Regards Di
Hi Michelle, How are you? Sorry I have not sent my dogs' datas yet...I have not forgotten but it will have to wait a little longer. Have you seen the discussion started by Susan L.? I thought she might be interested to hear from your own experience ....she is very upset about what is happening to her dog. Best wishes, Catherine
Hi Michelle,
It is on the main page in the Forums. Susan.L. has an IS in the USA called Dublin. He has had lots of upset stomach problems and now he has had a fit. She is very upset....he is only 2 years old and react badly to medications. I am sure she would welcome your comments. No Kim did not have a litter. We will try again in the Autumn. Regards.
hi thanks for the welcome. I am looking for a Irish Setter and was told about this web page by a breeder Dee Rance. Hoping to get lots off info about the breed on here, Tracey Mcintosh
Hi Michelle,
thanks for your excellent contribution in the ISBC newsletter. I do so hope breeders and breed clubs will become more open about discussing health matters openly! Wishful thinking????
I bred two epileptic dogs in my B-litter born in 2000, one started at 18 months the other just under 8 years. The 8 year old had to be pts. It is a terrible illness and one that should be taken very seriously when breeding. Obviously the line was not continuned (at least not on my side...)
You can find pedigree details on my site if interested.
best regards
Susan

Thanks for your comments - we spent a few hours with Bailey yesterday and his extended family at Leicester with Mo Savage - a new experience for us as our 'boys' have always been Follidowns (Gill and Mike Townsend). We are taking delivery of our dog crate on Monday, a new experience as they werent around last time we had a puppy! Am off now to look at your web page!
Hi Michelle, having fun showing dear Inca who will be 8 this Nov where has time gone. I have just registered her as a PAT dog and looking forward to sharing her with others - they will love her ! Gracie (Twoacres Lady Anna) is a joy to own a real Mummy's girl and an absolute sweetheart - every time I talk to her she wags her tail and makes me feel special she is just gorgeous. Sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time with your boy, epilepsy really is the most horrible condition to deal with. Beat wishes to you Lorraine
Can you give me more details about Fair dawn no one has heard of her could there be an error on pedigree?Do you have all of 1970 upwards. Am going to fish around in the suitcases now full of Setter pedigrees amd epileptic pedigrees havent looked at them, for years and had forgotten all about them
