I have two English Setters at the moment and one Irish Red Setter
How long have you owned Irish Setters?
About 10 years.
About Me:
Was the owner of a beautiful male Irish Setter named Fritz many years ago but sadly he is no longer with me. At the moment I'm the very proud owner of two beautiful English Setters and have recently added a new little 'Red' man to the family.
My Boys :
Legolas (10) born 04/04/2002 in Co.Longford, mother named Heather ~ not registered and never been shown, from working lines.
Theoden (Michelle's boy) (7) born 07/07/2004 in Lodgewood, Ferns, Co. Wexford.
Sire: Capparoe Prancer
Dam: Blackstairs Megan (both working lines)
I used to show Theoden at local shows around Wexford & Wicklow during the Summer months, it was always good fun !
Rohan (Glennara Sheherezade) (1) born 17/03/2011 in Hampshire U.K.
Sire: SH Ch Suteresett Milky Way With Scarletti JW
Dam: Sh Ch Glennara Lehana JW Sh CM
They are lovely dogs. He is very pale isn't he. Are they working strain? One of my Irish is half working strain, very intelligent indeed. We have round door handles and a lock on the fridge!!
If I were to have an English, (and that is what I first went to get, not an Irish) I would want an Orange Belton, I just think that they are wonderful...too late now...just too old to start in another breed....Dee and the gang
Thanks for the comments on my pictures... Saffy has been on the back of the settee since she was a puppy, now at 5 she has it molded to her shape...keeps me worm in the winter....ha ha
Do you have a place in mind where you are going to get your 'Red' from???? your lemon boy looks lovely, I would hate to try and keep him clean...I took mine out for the first time for a long time, (weather been just too bad, and dangerous under foot), and was surprised that it was still thick snow/ice, mainly ice, so a walk that normally takes about half an hour to walk took 'me' one and a half...but the 'kids' just loved it, Fin, Saffy's son, was in and out of the burn, and he was absolutely soaking wet...and very dirty, as it was so very muddy...where the snow wasn't...
Good luck with your new baby, can't wait to see what he (???) looks like. All the best Dee and the gang
There were 13 in the litter, hence LOTR to get enough names! In addition to Gandal, Elrond and Strider, there were Galadrial, Tom Bombadil, Evenstar, Beruthial, Aragon, Arwen, Goldberry, and .... three others I can't remember. In the early days I had a couple of English Setters too but the Irish are my darlings.
Hi Michelle, thanks for the friends request and the comments on my photos :-) Looks like your two boys are having a great life too! Love their names ;-)
That sounds great - I'm all up for it. Think you're the first other setter owner I've met who is also a LOTR fan! Unless everyone keeps quiet about it ;-)
Hi there thanks for the comments on the pictures of Jas and the babies. As for Jas bless her she had started to get old now...But the puppies, can you imagine how I felt when there was 15 of the little darlings, a houseful to say the least, unfortunately we lost one of the wee boys at two days old...but yes they are doing very well there are at least four + Fin here on ES and another on Facebook, (he is now a JW winner), so a really lucky litter.
Well unfortunately it wasn't Jasmine that had the puppies, it was Saffy, there is a picture of her on the blogs, Competition into how many puppies she was going to have, they were by CSection so it came as a shock all round...it was dreadful to find the wee mite gone...but the rest were big strapping babies, and a very even litter, Dad is on the site too, there were and ES litter....Mr Jingles....for me the best thing since sliced bread, perfect puppies and growing into wonderful Setters, but I am a tiny weeny bit predjudis...
The collars came from the Internet thanks to Nicole, and it really did make life easier, when you are bottle feeding every 4 hours for so many weeks, you need to be able to tell one from the other, and in the end, they are trained to collars from the word go, they never have that dreadful time trying to get them used to a collar, all the throwing themselves around and scratching at themselves....ha ha.
Saffy left a lot of it to me, she seemed to know that I would do most of the ''stuff'' involved with babies, she really did love the cleaning up after them though, after food. She loves her son and plays constantly with him...
Thanks for your comments on the photos. Olive's teeth were far too sharp back then but luckily she's got adult teeth now and she tends to mainly keep them to herself!!
I know that I had a Xbreed that had the most dreadful teeth, I was horrified when I noticed them...but the vet told me that dogs didn't feel teeth the way that we do, and perhaps he just didn't feel anything..I know that I was pleased to think that it didn't give Liuka any discomfort, I do hope that all goes well on the 16th....will be thinking of you both then...all the best Dee and the gang
Jas is doing really well, behaving like a puppy, posted some pictures, I need to get better with the camera though...;o))
Michelle and Legolas...I know how hard it can be to wait to find out if surgery or medicines work....yesterday here in USA watched with much interest a news clip of my former vet who is in the testing of stem cells ( dogs own) for use in dogs for ortho conditions...Bermese Mountain Dog who at 7 months came up limping and whining from pain. who did not benefit from medicines and normal treatments ...evidently they harvest fat from the dog and send it away to harvest the dog's stem cells and then inject them into the dog....this little guy had two treatments and is doing wonderful....jumping up onto the bed again and running and playing.....just amazing what the future may hold for our dogs if this is successful and even for us humans.
Legolas reminded me so much of our Brittany rescue....eyes and the markings on his face just looked so much like Pebbles.....except substitute red for that black markings....and I never could resist his eyes. He had me from the day my Dad adopted him and when he came to live with us fulltime later he took over our home and Shilo , our IS just let him...he became Shilo's protector from the dreaded black lab puppy who lived behind us and scared poor Shilo to the point he would no longer go out into the yard...Pebbles changed that for us as he stood guard between the fence and Shilo so Shilo could enjoy the yard again. Anyone who thinks dogs can't communicate with each other would have had to watch them work this out to truly believe they do communicate needs to each other. Will be following to see how Legolas does so keep us posted. Good Luck.
Thank you for your thoughts, I am just hoping for a good outcome. I hope that she will be safe when this is all over..I will keep everyone informed as to what, if anything, I find out about this situation...
And you are very welcome for the comment on your wee man and his big soulful eyes.. he certainly can act well...Dee and the gang
Pebbles was a very special dog...after my Mom passed away my Dad was just sitting and I could see his health going downhill so one day I stopped at a humane society here....and found Pebbles ( adopted him for my Dad that day but they had to nueter him before he could come home). Called my Dad and Dad said he did not want a dog...even though Pebbles was almost the spitting image of the Pebbles I grew up with.....took some persuading to get my Dad to come up from the country to even look at Pebbles....but so funny as an older gentleman was talking to Pebbles in his cage when we came in and my Dad ran up and said," Pebbles , What are you doing here? I am so glad I found you"....only lie I ever remember my Dad ever saying! They were inseparable....walked miles everyday and that dog was the light of my Dad's life...we watched Pebbles if Dad was in town or when he went to Florida in the summer so when my Dad passed away Pebbles came to live with us....and a week to the day he put me in a wheelchair for six months! and because of that I became addicted to watching the St Louis Cardinal Baseball games here with Pebbles cuddled up with me like he did when my Dad watched the game......habit that continues and is a very good thing as I found our Miss Molly looking for a forever home on the baseball game one night. :) Pebbles and Shilo were only six months apart in age....and we lost them less than a month apart. I missed my Shilo but it was Pebbles that just about broke my heart as I was very attached to him probably as he was a connection to my Dad. So indirectly I have my Dad and Pebbles to thank for us having our Molly. When I saw Legolas eyes it was like I was seeing Pebbles looking at me . Special memories of a special boy for me. Just know that we are rooting for a very good result and many wonderful times for you and Legolas!
Michelle...just have to ask what they were after in the wheel part of that jeep? looks like it must have been something special. Really cute pictures of both your dogs but Legolas has stolen my heart here. Love his eyes and expressions.
Mitch has made a full recovery and is back to his usual self. Hopefully you will be saying the same about Legolas in the near future.
Yes, Theoden and Mitch are similar - they are even more alike in your muddy photo of him. :) Mitch just loves the mud. Even when we have a dry spell of weather (a rare event in Ireland and Wales I know) he usually manages to find some and we rarely return home from a walk where he's not plastered with the stuff! :)
Thankfully no, he does have the annoying habit of eating all sorts of 'orrible stuff if I don't watch him, but has never (thankfully) rolled in anything foul. I know the feeling though as my previous Irish girl would have fitted in with your boys quite nicely. She absolutely loved rolling in anything, the smellier the better!!! The worst thing she ever rolled in was the remains of an upturned dead hedgehog, which except for the skin and spines had turned into a green liquid and looked like a bowl of pea soup. The stench was unbelievable, even after three baths you could still smell it on her! Indeed the aroma still lingers with me to this day. :) As for hunting birds etc - it's not only looks that Theoden & Mitch have in common.... when we were out on the moors it was always the case of nose down - bottom up and and off he would go on the trail of something or other. Hares were his favourite prey, though thankfully they were too fast for him and he never managed to catch one or anything else for that matter. He would even stand to point (think that's the correct term) for what seemed like ages on times - I used to get quite fed up of waiting for him to move in and flush whatever it was he was pointing at. Alas those heady days are no more, age has finally caught up with my boy and he does not wander far from my side nowadays. Though if he did chance upon a Hare I haven't the slightest doubt that he would still try his damndest to catch it :)
Thanks Michelle, Hawk has only had 2 GM and 3 small seizure. Last one was on 1/27/11 and it was a small one. He is not on any meds as the seizures are not close enough and my vet and Dr. Jean Dodds want to keep him off anthing unless they become more frequent. Keeping fingers and paws crossed that the seizures stay away. Had planned on showing Hawk, put not with epilepsy, he is very birdy so we are going in that direction instead.
Also hope things keep getting better for your lovely boys.
I am very sorry for Con... and I know what you are feeling as I have lost MC last year beginning of May. I joined ES later in the summer but could not manage to put pictures of MC during his life span since I was lucky to share his life for almost 14 years... I am really not good at grieving although MC was not my first dog, nor my only dog as we have Darwin right now, but definitively my very special soul mate. Soon I will stop confusing people and put a bit of order in my page. Many thanks for your nice and friendly comments about him. What about Legolas? everything ok with his shoulder now? Have a very nice weekend Michelle and plenty of cuddles to your lads :-)
Thanks for the birthday wishes Michelle....afraid I am being terribly indulgent this year....two days of being spoiled here, Hope you are having a great weekend.
I quite understand that it is all over, Jas is the same... from head to foot...I have been giving her a trim for her birthday....will try and take some pictures of her and post them for her birthday on the 7th...speak soon all the best Dee and the gang
Well just bring him round and I will give him a trim, he may look like the moths have been at him...perhaps we could call it the Moth Class....what do you think...at least we would have some competition in it....Jas looks like a woolly sheep. but hey who cares. to me she is the most beautiful thing on four legs....all the best good night Dee and the gang
Michelle ...take a peek at our Molly's picture.....she has some serious personality issues of the hair going on on top of her head! Know I could trim it or use a smoothing lotion but it sort of is like part of her personality...more humid it gets the more it stands up .....could put it into a ponytail if she would not go crazy trying to get the bows out. Love them for who they are and cause they love us!
Thanks for the request Michelle. I just adore Legolas' mad hair and Theoden is gorgeous, too. I think Setters just look stunning when they are almost white. My partner's uncle and auntie have an elderly ES lady which they rescued and he keeps saying that he would like one, too. I don't think I could cope with the hoovering though. Oh well who knows what the future holds.
