How long have you owned Irish Setters?
25 years
About Me:
first IS Sharla died at 15 years. second IS Cherie died Feb 2010 to cancer. Very sad. I was not going to get another IS but saw an add in the paper for pups and could not resist. We bought our Molly down from Queensland by plane. It is 1 year yesterday that she arrived and looked so cute in her crate at the airport. The staff were great and Molly travelled to our home some 45 kms from the airport without any problems. Called in at the vet on the way home to show the new pup off and together with the vet nurse named her Molly. She has become a huge part of our lives.

Hope you find something special to do with some of his time off...a special walk with Molly?  idea!!!!  Family pictures of each of you with Molly!!  and if you have a self timer on your camera those can be lots of fun to take ...everyone always seems to laugh cause they are waiting for the timer to go off!
  • Sherry Miller

Was she asleep?  no hood on jumper? surprises me she growled at you?  did you talk to her immediately to tell her no to the growl and let her know it was you?  Ours tried that growl with us one time when she first came home...issue was a shirt of mine she decided she was not going to let us have ....we scolded her and so far have not heard that growl again.  Your Molly's sounds like she was startled?  were the workmen still in the house andhad she gotten in her regular snoozes that day?
  • Sherry Miller

Our Molly barks when they are outside the house....once we open the door and let someone in she greets them and then does her best to get them to play with or pet her.  Boys were pretty much the same way....one thing all of our males and now Molly does that makes us laugh is if Angie brings her boyfriend over to watch a movie ...Molly (as did our males) has to get right in the middle between them so she gets all the petting!
  • Sherry Miller

Center of attention is where they presume they belong!  so they have figured out how to stay there!  Almost comical how if I kiss Alan she has to get over there to get in the middle....but still does not give doggie kisses....just rubs her head and neck all over his face! lol//
  • Sherry Miller

We call those doggie licks here kisses....the one thing that Molly does not do.  Not even when I smeared steak or peanut butter on my face!  Off tomorrow....but work Saturday PM....Molly sluggish tonight...did not want her dinner so watching her to see if I can figure out what is going on....she did want me to hand feed her her training treats so perhaps she is not excited about her food or is just off it tonight.
  • Sherry Miller

No ticks.  She played outside while I was gone,,,,and ran out to greet me when I came home....Alan had fed her at 5 pm while I was still at work and she just ignored it....last night she got upset when I did not sit in kitchen with her while she ate so perhaps it is fact I was not home again.  I did walk her in the rain tonight to make up for being gone...silly girl wanted her walk so as it was a light rain and I just needed an umbrella decided to indulge the baby here.  She is sleeping on sofa as I type this. Will keep my eye on her!
  • Sherry Miller

Will do.  How is Baby Molly doing with the constrution next door? getting used to it or still upset with all the noise?
  • Sherry Miller

Getting ready for bed here...sleeping in family room so I can keep an eye on Molly....she will curl up in chair by me .  Just a worrywort here when it comes to Molly.  She does not seem to be in any pain, no tummy noises going on ...just mellow and ready to snuggle up it seems.  Rain in forecast for tomorrow here...which is something we usually count on for Good Friday....almost always seems to at least rain for a wee bit on that day.  I  always thought it was the heavens weeping for all of us on earth as a child.

Hope you all have a great Easter!  and that Molly talks Neil into some extra walks and treats!  Molly would hate jack hammers here so I bet you all are glad to have a few days of quiet.

  • Barbara

Dear Eunice! Wish you, your family and Molly happy easter! All the best Barbara
  • Sherry Miller

Hi Eunice...Molly has bounced back today but she is such a smartypants!  I checked her about three times last night ...made sure she was doing fine, no tummy rumbling, pain , color of her gums ...and she just rested comfortably all night.  This AM once again she ignored her food.  So a wee bit later I gave her a Frosty Paws ( small doggie ice cream) ...which she decided she would lick with much gazing up to be sure I was watching her.  Alan came back home and she still had not touched her regular food...or the graham crackers he put down for her but he did give her the daily newspaper to bring to me...so I rewarded her with some of her regular training treats ( that other dog food ) and she gobbled the little pieces up so then I started handfeeding her more of them....all with her looking up at Alan and I to be sure we knew she was eating to please us!  Little stinker!  Tried very hard not to laugh as figure she got what she wanted !  Yucky weather here today...heavy rain and tornado warnings this pm  and more rain for all weekend.  so she was inside mostly with us...did get a dry spell for a wee bit so we sat out on the patio and watched her run and do her hunting..which is exactly what makes her happiest.  Angie and I went to two dog stores today...afraid I got carried away with new toys for Molly....but did want to replace a few of her old toys.  Got my ham picked up but that is about all I got done today...work tomorrow so had to get that running done today.  Molly sleeping in chair behind me as I type, just getting her early evening snooze in as she will want a game of fetch before bedtime I bet.  Hope you had a good day...and that Neil got to enjoy playing with Baby Molly today,
  • Sherry Miller

Eunice I think last night and the night before were changes in Molly's routine in some ways...I had been online the one night as my sister just recently became pretty ill so was answering some emails...and then next night I was gone til later than normal .  She may have just not been hungry but today sure was playing it for all it was worth..those ohhh poor me looks.....and the peeking to be sure we are both watching her.  Yes we do allow them to play us to get what they want...just is part of who we are and who they are it seems!  She does know the word NO but if she likes something you do with her once she tries her best to be sure it becomes part of her daily routine.  Even last night when I checked her in middle of the night she rolled right onto her back for her favorite belly rubs so wonder if she is going to expect those massages here again tonight?
  • Sherry Miller

Thanks for the thoughts for my sister...will be a long four or five months for her so please keep her in your prayers.

Sounds like your Molly is working you also.  Tonight I am trying to figure out what I need to add for my summer wardrobe ....know I have to have at least a current summer jacket or top for work here but think basically it is boiling down to a navy shell and crops for everyday!  Sandals are the other item I guess.  So funny as I am putting winter /fall things away as you are getting them out!

How is Molly liking your cooler weather?  bet she is wanting to spend more time outdoors.  Ours loves sunny brisk windy days the best....perfect for hunting her shadows and not getting hot doing it.

  • Sherry Miller

Ahh sounds like she is an active little one! Perhaps trying too hard to keep up with her older sister?  I will defend the middle child as I am the middle of the first three girls in my family.  Hate to hear they get hurt....especially when we can remember the same injury from when we were kids.

Molly cuddled up here tonight....she is less active when it is rainy....she will go out but unless she is chasing something she tries to keep her feet as dry as she can. Should not have cleaned my closet tonight...found a bad of Molly toy's I had hidden last fall....oh well ....will leave them for another occasion to surprise her.

  • Sherry Miller

Happy Easter Eunice!  Give Baby Molly an IS hug from Miss Molly.  Hope you had a relaxing day with some nice weather.

I have eggs getting ready to be dyed here but wanted to drop you a quick note.  Well , seems last night (Friday night here) while I was chatting to you 7 tornadoes hit the St Louis area....all north of here (15 to 30 minutes from us) ...lots of damage and closed down the airport but miracle as no one severely injured.  Another storm hitting here now and seems like we will have another four days of them at least.  May need an ark here if it keeps raining!  Just wanted to let you know we are fine here just wet.

  • Sherry Miller

Fall and Easter just seem so odd to me....Easter and Spring !!!! Halloween for you all is in spring?  Halloween here is falling leaves, bonfires and leaves changing colors...and right after harvest so pumpkins and gourds are easily available.

Molly tiptoes between batches of raindrops and tries her best to avoid the worse mud to make her outside trips...has been really good about going out but does not really like to have her paws  wiped when she comes back inside....too bad she won't wear boots...but then the boots would be muddy so guess it is an ongoing battle of which is worse...wrestling her into and out of muddy boots or just wiping her paws clean?  :) though I still think someone needs to develope a "paws bidet" that washes and then quickly air dries their paws as soon as they come inside.

Noticed you blamed Neil for riling Baby Molly up!  sounds like me blaming Alan for any wildness inside the house...and for babying Molly and for anything else I wish to blame him for!   Is Baby Molly romping thru the house or jumping on things inside in her naughtiness?  Isn't it funny how these males in our life can stir up even our female dogs?  Has to be that male/female  bond!  Glad you are getting your painting done....I have casserole in oven now so tomorrow will be just warming up and cooking some asparagus here when Angie gets home from work. Ohhhh meant to tell you that yesterday I found and had to buy some hot cross buns made strictly with strawberries as the fruit in it.....think I really liked them...only got one for me but it was different...did seem odd to not have raisins or dried fruit in them...my Grandma would have a fit at my buying them as she always made them from scratch.

  • Sherry Miller

12 AM so is officially  Easter here.!  Got home from work around 9 pm so just finishing up what I wanted to get cooked ahead for tomorrow here...it is cooling before I put it into the refrigerator.  Hot Cross buns were made with strawberries instead of the raisins or dried fruit that is traditional,  they had the right shape and the cross on top and when I heard what they were I had to have one for Good Friday for myself.  I love strawberries...it was not a strong flavor but was decent.  Hard to find good ones here also.

Laughed at Baby Molly's romp....and know that coffee spilling well here...Our Molly also likes to greet us in bed....just a little too excited when I am still asleep....she would love for me to sleep in family room as I did the other night with her....kept watching to see if I was going to get up and go to bed but seemed content just to be able to see me.  Molly thinks we should drink our coffee out on the patio and watch her hunt...so when she sees a coffee cup here she heads to the door...goes out and then waits for us ...makes us feel bad if we are not going out as she sits so nicely watching for us to come out....we started that early morning coffee and late evening iced coffee on the patio when she first came home....never did it in the winter but we do it when weather is nice and now she thinks coffee means we are ALL going outside!

  • Sherry Miller

Humpty Dumpty eggs?  dyed hard boiled?  name sounds so cute.  Glad you got to see pictures of the little ones.  I will talk to our oldest grandson this afternoon..he will fill me in on all the Easter Bunny fun...and his egg hunt.  Wish they were closer.  Think we will be lazy this Easter due to weather...think I may put off Molly's treasure hunt til yard is dried up some here as it was so much fun to watch her last year. She will get her mini basket though .
  • Sherry Miller

Molly is eating fine again but trying to con us out of things she likes...like the doggie icecream I gave her when we were worried about her.  Such a smartypants ..plus hard to resist when she gives me that please mom look!
  • Sherry Miller

wonder what would happen if you did not use bananna?  or would one bananna make quite a few of the treats for Baby Molly<  this is one I might like to try as ours lovesssssss her ice cream!

So far oldest grandson is only 7 so he does not FB .....talks to me by phone a couple of times a week.  2 year olds do not talk much so it is more you talk to them and they make noises back.

  • Sherry Miller

Eunice enjoy the rest of your Easter ...and the walk with Molly. I am heading off to bed here as last casserole is in refrigerator.  Talk to you soon...hugs to little Baby Molly!

    S

  • Sherry Miller

now that would be as easy thing to make....though I do not thaw the frosty paws before I give them to her...she likes to lick them too much...so not sure if I would thaw these.

So nice that you get to talk to the grandkids....twins at 2 seem to have their own language so so far no one else is sure what they are saying.  Donavon though can chatter up a storm.  Hope you had a wonderful Easter.

  • Marjolein Bogaard

    Happy Easter Eunice!!

  • Sherry Miller

We had a very quiet Easter here....rain so all muddy outside so Molly's treasure hunt is postponed til it is dry out.  I did get to talk to Donavon and seems they had a nice day...and too much candy!  We had a late dinner as Angie worked and Molly enjoyed her Easter basket...two toys still in basket but the two I hid in the house she has played with all evening...so guessing she would rather I hide things for her to find.  Bully stick has been hidden for about the tenth time....will be interesting to see if she ever really chews on it. You can see her thinking as she walks around looking for the perfect hiding spot...this one is about an inch wide but is about eighteen inches in length so little harder for her to hide.  She keeps trying out different spots in the house.

What is going in where the dining room set was?  Molly would also think it was her new playground!

  • Sherry Miller

I am laughing about Molly behaving herself...reminds me of taking Alan with me to the vet for heartworm check last spring......she was just wild....took three of them plus me to hold her and whole time she was squirming and acting like she was being killed....and looking right at Alan the whole time.  Well , when she was due for her injections and another blood test in July Angie and I took her....and only I held her for all the injections and blood test....Dr Linda looked at me and laughed as she has known me since she was a little girl....Alan now banned from the exam rooms!  Molly just happy to see everyone at the vets and no problems at all....she does hide the bone the vet gives her after she gets her injections...right by the door that leads out of the exam room.  Seems your Molly also acts up for her Daddy!
  • Sherry Miller

My understanding of a bully stick is that it is a sterilized beef tendon...hard but softens as they chew on it and is digestible unlike raw hide.  This is the first time we have tried one for her....does not surprise me that Molly is running around hiding it as she hides her hidey bone for two to four weeks before finally chewing it and eating it (it is an edible bone).  Molly just loves to hide things...and for us to hide her toys for her to find them...think  her favorite thing to do is play hide and hunt!  Never have had one hide things like this before so we all enjoy watching her ...just wish we understood why she does it but as she enjoys doing it I figure let her have fun.
  • Sherry Miller

Has to be the male thing!  I sometimes just call Alan Molly's boytoy....as she is just crazy about him...and he is extremely flattered and secretly I think very pleased to finally have one of our Irish's be that way over him....as all the boys were that way with me.

We have had steady rain all day...and reading the paper shocked me today...I knew tornado hit Friday night north of us but not how bad it was ...worse one in 40 years....so I guess I better go back to paying more attention to forecasts here. With more rain and storms for early part of week figure we will have local creek and road floodings....will have to adjust my route to work til river goes down.  Just a miracle no one was killed and only minor injuries . Lot of homes condemned and not liveable so will be quite a while before those people are back in their homes.

  • Sherry Miller

dates differently?  we do month, day and than year ...and you all do?  so much is backwards from here to there....seasons you have your holidays in seem so funny to me but guess it is all what you grow up with so ours have to seem so odd to you.
  • Sherry Miller

Molly still hiding her bully stick and moving it every ten minutes....now is under my desk with her dragging a rug under to cover it up,  I just have been trying to find something for her to chew on that is not as hard as sterilized bone so will see if this works,
  • Sherry Miller

Thank you for explaining how you all do the date....I will get my brain around it at some point.  Bully stick now buried in her toy box under her stuffed animal collection.....two toys that were in her basket are still in there....will play hide the bunny with those tomorrow night.  Molly sleeping behind me on the sofa....tiptoed outside just a bit ago so figure she is down for the count now.   We had put some special doggie treats in her basket....one looked like a sandwich cookie, one a biscotti and the other a bagel....she ate the cookie and biscotti but has ignored that bagel.  So funny  when we give her a new treat even.....she will put it on the floor and sniff it for quite a while....then walk away from it....evidently thinks about it..comes back and will lick it and flip it over to check it all out again and only then if the new treat meets her standards will she eat it. She evidently has her own set of rules for so many things and we still are learning just what they are....sure aren't the same as the no rules my boys had!
  • Sherry Miller

    will do now
  • Sherry Miller

uhohhhh on that bully stick....do not think Alan will be getting her another one when I tell him this one...they told him leg tendon.....might even make Alan squirm a wee bit when I tell him what tendon the internet says it is.  Thank you for telling me to look it up...and I will be asking the lady at our pet store why she did not tell him this?

  • Sherry Miller

Eunice I did just go read the label...it is preservative free but does not say what sort of tendon.  Shop he got this at is where you can buy good dog food and raw food etc so makes me wonder.
  • Sherry Miller

I do leave her dry kibble down all the time...but only put a set amount in per day...usually she rations it pretty well and almost always has at least a half cup left at end of the day. Alan spoils her in the AM with a few graham crackers and a doggie biscuit to jump start her morning...that is the bone she often will bury under my blanket if I am still in bed.  Around 5 pm she will get some tinned meat...salmon , beef. lamb mixed with small amount of her kibble for her main meal.  Doggie biscuit when she finishes that meal also.  That is pretty much it unless we give her a wee bit of cooked vegetables, fruit, or some plain popcorn.

  • Sherry Miller

it does not look at all like that would be what it is....now I want to not even look at it! Stop laughing at me!
  • Sherry Miller

perhaps I should help Molly hide it in Alan's underwear drawer?  and then tell him?  lol

We are bad........perhaps it is good thing we are not close or we could really get into trouble!

  • Sherry Miller

went back to read what pet owners said about bully sticks....some call them bullwrinkles.....lol  will tell Alan tomorrow after I get off work....maybe after I talk him into playing fetch the bully stick with Molly!????  Seems a lot of pet owners love these but I am thinking I will spring for deer antlers !!!! Want a bully stick?Night Eunice and thanks for the bully tip!
  • Sherry Miller

Hi Eunice...sorry I crashed last night big time....bully stick is still being moved and hidden by Miss Molly here.  But Alan's face was a treasure when I told him what that bully stick was...his comment was "She better not get any ideas here!"  Angie said no wonder she likes it!  grrrrr....lots of teasing gong on here about it but have yet to see her really chew on the silly thing.....guess that is ultimate recycling going on.  Thiking deer antlers sound much nicer!  How are you all doing?

We had computers off last night due to lightening n area but missed worse part of storms last night. Two more days of rain and then a cooling off before we find out what is coming next.

  • Sherry Miller

Here they reccomend you go into a basement or lower level of the building...away from windows and doors ( bathrooms on main level usually a good choice),,we do have a basement here....and one room of it has no windows at all and the main room has only a tiny window so in bad storms that is where we go.  We have a family room down there with a tv , sofa etc so it is not really a hardship to go down there .

I also agree on no more bully sticks...though this one might be around forever if her whole interest in it is to hide it....or walk around carrying it like it is a cigar in her mouth!  Alan could not believe he got that for her....and we keep telling him he better watch out.

Shame you have to keep after them for noise on the construction site....should be a given in a neighborhood they keep noise to a minimum.  Will be glad for you all when they finish the construction.  How is Molly doing with all the noise?  Ours is so nosey she would have to know everything that is going on.  Trying to download a picture I took of her today....just a funny one.

  • Sherry Miller

So Molly wants to learn how to chat with my Molly...then we would be in trouble.  I will try to get picture of the bully stick ...right now is hidden somewhere...I was at a Rock and Mineral Sale today and when I got back no bully stick ,  She will dig it out again so will try to catch picture of her with it.  Poor Alan as we keep teasing him he better be careful if she loses this bully stick.  Guess we do have our own sense of humor.

Does Molly lie on your bed while you take your shower? is what our's does...and heaven's help you if you spray anything...even in the bathroom...she will start rolling and rolling and throw the pillows all over the place....like I sprayed her with something....she will see me pick up the hairspray etc but run in there as evidently she likes to roll on our bed.

HOpe everything is alright with your grand daughter......email if you want to talk.

  • Sherry Miller

    Two funny pictures added !
  • Sherry Miller

Our Molly just sees the one kitty when we walk...cat lives with dogs but not sure how she feels about other dogs or what Molly's reaction would be if she got close...and not fair to the cat to find out. Cat does not move but watches Molly the whole time we are walking past her home...Molly will also stare at the cat and freeze until I urge her forward.  We used to have a kitty we called our porch cat...belonged to our next door neighbor but hung out on our front porch( after the sparrows) and would also come into the backyard to play with Shilo....missed Scooter when they moved as we were so used to greeting him as we came and went.
  • Sherry Miller

Scooter finally passed away at 18 years old...I used to go see him.  We had just gotten so used to Scooter being there that when they moved it was like they took part of our house!   You have had good luck with your Irish Setter's and cats...think Molly here would be like your Cherie...afraid to go past the cat and would cry about it....she is a terrible crybaby.  I laugh at how much she cries about things.  Our boys never whined or cried when they wanted something but Molly lets us know what she wants all the time.

Does Baby Molly try to carry as many toys as she can in her mouth?  Ours tries to get as many as she can in there to greet us with or to get us to chase her ....then she tries to roo with all the toys in there and it comes out so funny.

  • Sherry Miller

Sharla was a good age for an Irish ...my old gentleman Shilo was 12 and 1/2 years old...Pebbles the same age.  Right now I am trying to keep Molly from taking her toys outside to play with as it is wet and muddy out there. She had lost a few toys to the girls next door as they love to destroy any stuffed toy so it was time to replace a few here.  Picture of her was  with her Easter ball and the Lamb Chop toy she stole here. She has been carrying the two in her mouth since Sunday...tried to fit her bunny in also but hasn't quite figured out how to get that one in also.  We do toss the soft ones in the house for her to fetch...especially.lately as it has just been too wet for much fetching outside. She loves to scatter her toys in family room...just wish she would put them back into her toybox!
  • Sherry Miller

All of our Irish have always played a lot with toys...toys were to keep them from getting into things they should not with the boys!  and believe me they did their share and more of that.  We always included the IS at all holidays so they got presents and even an Easter basket...perhaps because we waited so long for our girls to arrive.  Wedo tend to spoil Molly as she has been such a delight and surprise for all of us.  Keep looking at her and wonder if her original owner has any idea of what an awesome dog she is...something we can never understand but something we are so thankful for.  Took such a tiny bit of work to train her and get her used to life inside a home and she learns so quickly that it seems perhaps she never had a true chance to show they just how wonderful she is.

Miss Molly just always has a toy within reach if not two...hides a few in places where she can get them quickly so she greets us with a toy or two.  She knows that we usually will almost always stop to play a quick game of fetch or catch with her so I guess that is why she loves all her toys so much....thing that works almost as well for attention is rolling over on her back for a bellyrub.

  • graham edwards

    Hello Eunice.

I was looking at the Photos of your girl and read you got her from Queensland,

Can I ask who the breeder is as she looks a lot like a setter we hope to get a girl from later this year.

    Cheers

    Graham.

  • graham edwards

    Thanks for that,

I thought there was a similarity, I take it you have been chating with Carmel, we really did like Mac and Annabelle when we went up and seen them and decided straight away to wait for a pup if we were accepted. Carmel told me about this site so I have here to blame for all the time I spend looking at Photos. Didn't realise how much I missed the breed over the last 15 years or so.

Got the bug again when we went to Ireland and seen some really nice dogs there, even though most were pets.

I know I will know the answer, but is Molly's nature loving and outgoing with a heap of confidence.

    Hope to chat again

    Graham.

  • Dudley Duke of Lancester

Thanks! I'm really enjoying chatting up people all over the world. Am very isolated in South-USA as there are very few I.S. here. Labs, Goldens & Labradoodles rule. I was told by woman at dog park today: "I thought Irish Setters were extinct"!!!
  • Sherry Miller

We got home really late...after midnight so I did turn the wedding on ...started here at 4 am...dosed in and out watching it.  Hope you took some pictures of Baby Molly in her feathers!  Kate's dress was lovely...almost made me want to get married again!  Hope you are doing good.

  • Sherry Miller

Don' t hink I could get Alan to cork open champagne at 6 am here.....so Molly and I watched it and then I would dose for a bit and wake up and watch some more.  Hats and fascinators were fun....but it was her dress that was just perfect I thought...love the more simple.  Going now to look at Baby Molly's pictures.
  • Sherry Miller

How did not get Baby Molly to not shake that boa to death?  Ours would have been streaking thru the house shaking all those feathers!
