Irish Setters have been a passion of mine since childhood memories of my first encounter of one in Maryland. With the film BIG RED the die was cast. I have enjoyed setters since 1981 first in Australia and then back in the USA. I brought two back to the states with me KELLY and KATY SCARLETT.
Today I have one Aussie girl,Kumara ("Sweet Potato" Australian Aboriginal) and a Scarlett Rose - a rescue from Save Our Setters in Tennessee.
Welcome Marc, this is a great site. Thanks for the friend request. I read that you used to live in Aus? Where abouts did you live? Must browse your pics now! cheers, Cheryl
Thanks, Cheryl. I lived in Melbourne - more specifically in Strathmore and then in Mt Waverely. I got my first Irish Setter in OZ from a family up in the Dandenong Ranges the first week after I arrived in January 1981. Took a train from Strathmore to Flinders Street onto Belgrave and then a car ride into the ranges. What a beautiful spot. Brought home a little girl, Kelly in a clothes pin basket. Rode the train all the way home unaware that dogs were not to travel. Thankfully she slept most of the way. Got a second setter, Katy Scarlett from a breeder in the Mt Waverley area three years later - had lineage to Taraglen. Brought both back to the States when I returned in 1987.
My oldest setter now is Kumara - she came from Taraglen and will be 12 on August 13.
Scarlett Rose is my younger girl now - she came to us from Save Our Setters in Tennessee.
Rainy days indeed...it is the middle of ''Sunny'' Scotland it rains most of the winter.....when it isn't snowing of cause...but at the moment it is freezing or below. Looks like being a bad winter....but the dogs love it...perminantly wet but running through the Burns is great fun for them...keeps their coat shiny and soft...lol...;o)
Hi Marc, Thankyou for your friend request. I'm sure you're going to love it here. A wonderful, very friendly site. I'm from Melbourne & enjoyed your story about bringing your baby puppy home from Belgrave on the train. My Tess is from Eireanmada but our first Irish girl was from Taraglen. I do remember hearing the name 'Katy Scarlett'.
Thankyou also for your kind comments on my photo's. Have just looked at yours. Love them. They are beautiful.
Thank you for friends invite, i've looked at photos of your other setter collection, you must of been collection for a long time, mine consists of 3 statues and a couple of prints, one i've had is like a pencil drawing it's my favorite i've had it over 30years (",)
Thanks Marc for your nice comment on Finlays photo he is a lovely boy i know we all spoil our dogs but as he's on borrowed time i dont think eating ice cream will do him much harm (",)
Hi Marc, last december we thought he had sprained his foot but as he didn't seem to be walking any better the vet x-rayed in case it was fractured, nothing prepared me to hear they thought he had a bone tumor, they told me if we left him he would have only 6weeks if they amputated he could have 6months, they did lots of x-rays, tests and bone biopsy, it was hard decision but i couldn't amputate, as he didn't seem to be getting worse they refered him to a specialist in case they had got it wrong but he agreed with my vet, them first 2months were terrible i couldn't eat or sleep all i could think of was Finlay, then i thought if we didn't have long togerher i was wasting the time we had being upset, i still get upset but at moment he seems fine we just dont have such long walks and now his fur on leg has grown back you wouldn't know anything was wrong, so we are keeping our fingers crossed he stays well for as long as possible, are setters are a special breed of dog (",)
