Help

Hi Everyone can anyone offer help. One of our Irish is comming up 1 year old. From day one he has come to his name and whistle.

About three months ago he discoverd the joys of absconding (3 1/2 hrs being the longest). Whilst he is in a enclosed field we have no problem once he sees an open area of fields he's off, nose to the ground he never lifts his head to see where we are totally ignores all calls and whistles. Its sheer luck when we catch him.

I need to find a solution for…

Hi Liz ,,or should I say Mrs Firewitch Manhatton,,its been a long time,, are you still mending broken bones or sticking plasters onto people ??,,when I went into Cleckheaton I used to keep a lookout for you ,,gosh such a lot has happened over the years,,how many shows have you been to ?? I no longer have any setters ,but I still have some dogs,,I was poorly a few years back and found I couldnt cope with the setters,,I was showing a young dog Wynjil Gamesman he got a cooked chicken from the working surface and during the night a bone pieced his tummy and I couldent do anything to save him it was to late,a month later I lost a 9yr with cushing, that left me with a 13 1/2yr old lady, in the mean time I had got a Schipperke he was to keep Digby ,,the Wynjil,, dog company it just goes to show you cant rely on anything in life,,if you would like to ring me at some time its,,,01274 871091,,it would be great to catch up on old times,,,,,take care look forward to hearing from you,,,Pat x

Hi liz
I hate to say it but it took me until the age of three for my Irish MIa decided that she was going to be caught. I must admit the longest it took me to catch her was 2 hours so i think you now have the record. x

Hi Liz,

Fortunately I never had this problem, but I was told that when this happens, we should "re-train" them, that is going out with your pocket full of treats and starting again to let them go just a couple a metres, call them, give them a treat, and increase little by little the distance AND the time between calls.
Good luck, as setters can be very strong minded as we know!!!!
