black spot in the eye: NICE NEWS!!

Dear all: we just had a good outcome regarding the post below! We had the results of the biopsy and the spot  was benign: no one single abnormal cell was visible !!!  I am so glad we removed it and did the test: now we know it was nothing nasty and is not going to come back again :))) A simple growing pigment,  in the end!

Oberon doesnt quite understand why we are all so happy and smiling, i think  he just decided that he's going to be  happy and smiling  as well becase we are :)

and now I am just adding a new topic- unfortunately not quite nice- and asking once again for information and support from this wonderful forum..

Few months ago I spotted a tiny black spot in the Oberon'e eye, in the white cornea. The eye specialist said it was just pigmentation and nothing to worry about. Now, a couple of months later, the area of the spot is double (still small but, i mean, it has CHANGED!) and i am quite worry.. I am keeping a diary with photos and then I plan to take all back to the vet, but: has any of you experience with this? I am wondering it may be a melanoma? What is the action? thanks a lot for any info.. cheers

Kim , one of my bitches , had a tiny black spot on her eye when she was about 3 years old. I was recommended the eye clinic near Hereford to have it removed as it could grow. She was operated there with laser surgery and I was told that it was nothing else than pigment. She totally recovered and it never came back. If you want to know more about the clinic or the vet, do message me and I will give you all info. Kim is now 8 years old and a very healthy and fit Irish.

No experience I'm afraid silvia, but as Oberon is 'family' I am very interested to know how you get on. Definintely if it is changing in size and shape I would want a more experienced assessment.

Thanks a lot Catherine and Sue! I am traveling for work next week but i plan to book Oberon for the vet on the week after and I will keep you posted. Yes, Catherine, I would love to know the address of that clinic. Another one that has been recommended is the one near Marlbrook (Leominster) : maybe is the same? I hope it will be as smooth  for Oberon as well ;)

btw: back in september, when I discovered  the black spot, we drove to the Setter Association championship show at Stoneleigh were prof Bedford was running an eye clinic. He was the specialist who said that is just pigmentation, so, because he's hugely experienced,  we were quite conforted. However, we havent payed for the whole visit at his clinic, this was just a popup clinic at the show (I am very grateful to other IS members who  told us about the event!! A good occasion to have an opinion at a fraction of the price:)- but now that the shape has changed and I have pictures taken at few months distance I  would certainly ask a second followup.. finger crossed and thanks a lot again!

Hello Silvia, there are other clinics that you can go to, Prof Bedford hasn't any this month, but Ian Mason who is very good has a clinic on the 23rd Feb near Guildford, it looks as if the price is £10 if you do not want a certificate and £32 if you want it. It would be a good second opinion. The details are on this link,

Dear all

just an update: the Oberon's eye pics have been sent to two independent ophthalmologist, who both said in their opinion is a benign pigmentation (and not to be removed). However, for sake of mind, we have a referral to the rvc eye clinic next monday, so the specialist will see us in person. I hope they confirm is noting to be worry.. Just in case is useful for others, I posted a pic of the spot as it was in October and as it is in february (in pixel size, we can quantify an increase of 22% in these few months). Finger crossed and I will keep posted :)

a bit of an update: we went yesterday at the royal veterinary hospital (this is the place were we have been referred in the end, since closer to london) and we opted for a removal. Very quick and smooth, oberon is happy and the anesthetic was really light. is very very likely a benign pigmentation, but the sample has been sent for a test and biopsy so we will know everything for sure in a week or so.. Finger crossed :)

actually, we could have opted for doing nothing and just monitoring, since the opionion of the clinic is that the spot is very flat , not swelled, so it is a very likely benign spot.. But, since it has changed in size, we thought is better to be absolutely sure and with the removal they can keep the sample and do the complete analysis. So we have a very nice and clear eye now, and we are just waiting for the results! thanks a lot!
