After losing our lovely Ruairi only a week ago I'm watching Dillon our older boy who will be 9 at the end of July very carefully.

He's the type of boy who I think will now get old without his Mr Motivator and am wondering if we should get him a companion. He and Ruairi were both entire and it was never an issue, not for a moment. They were uncle and nephew and we had Ruairi as an 8 week old puppy when Dillon was 2 and a half.

If we decide to get him a companion we would want anither boy but should we get a puppy or an older boy of say 4 or 5?

Is a puppy going to just be a pest to Dillon and not as much of a companion or would an older boy try to dominate him as he's such  a gentle giant?

I'd really appreciate advice from anyone.

Thank you all for your sympathy and support over the past week. xx

I donn`t envy you trying to make your decision. I donn`t feel qualified to advise you as there are so many others on this site that are, all I will say is I would if possible go for a puppy that had been run on by a breeder. My reasons are that you can get a better idea if he has the caracter you need for Dillon. Good luck with what ever you decide, there is one very lucky red out there soon to be part of your family.

My simple answer is  "Yes", go for it and enjoy!

Angela, a new baby will be just for the ticket for both you and Dillon. Ruari will never be replaced but think of the fun Dillon will have raising his puppy, it will give him a new lease of life. I had several babies from my last litter go to homes with old Irish Setters and both owners said it seemed to give their oldies a fresh zest for life. Goodluck. XXX

Hello Jane, I was speaking with another breeder yesterday who said they had a 9 month old dog that had been run on and had decided to part with. He is nicley bred and will have lived in the house and reared nicely, he might be a good choice as a companion for Dillon. If you want to follow him up, invite me as a friend and I will email you the breeders details, they are not on ES.

When we lost Ellie our other dog Ruby(who was Ellie's pup) was so down I thought we would lose her too, then we got Orla who was a like a  breath of fresh air..I must say they did not get on the first few days and I thought I had made a mistack but now the are best friends and the best thing I could have done x
