Eva, generally the dogs are not being measured at shows under FCI, but if you know the breed well the size is "in your eye" so to speak. All I can think is that he went for the type he is used to and that is much bigger than in FCI standard. The BOB dog is of lovely type, just big. The Res dog has been World Winner for 3 times also lovely type but big, So are they sending us a message that size does not matter? Ok, but then put this in the standard. We have been working hard to bring the size down in the same time maintainig good bone and overall balance for more than a decade. I believe we were lucky that the judge even noticed our boy. I could see he did not even glance at him when they were standing, but he definitely gave him a good look going around the ring as he moves beautifully.
In general I thought the judging was very professional, although fast as he had the biggest entry of the day, he stil gave each dog a good going over and same amount of time. I know we can not expect a written description at such large shows, but stil would be most interesting to read his comments. Sometimes the descriptions are very strange and I am stil trying to recognise my dog in the description I got for him a week ago in Dortmund...

Nothing...i like to do some nice thing for the breed and setter's lovers ;-)
About Alenka's interessant point, i would add also another important thing...The Heads!!
I have seen to much heads not correct, the standard for the head it's the same everywere, but at moment many judges doesn't care about that. It is one of the most important things in all breeds, and it is not good to have many dogs with "not parallel heads" - "not sweet eyes espression" - "not good ears set"... It's just my opinion, but i think we need to think also about that...

The heads Valeria I agree with you.....the head is the type, what is an irish setter looking at you and not telling by his/her expression:I am yours and you are mine! Were there american heads as well?Ok the judge is judging what is offered in the ring, but also the judge must have his own integrity to express own opinion based on knowledge and own good eye for the dog.We European & FCI breeders must follow the FCI standard by no means.I am just reading Mr.Frank Kanes book on judging the gun dogs breeds and am delighted how this well known judge with few words explains the most important features of different breed from head to tail.We should never say I know all,as there are those reputable ones who know all and a bit more!
So we just have to comment ,to discuss and to carry on with the goal to know better & to be better either in breeding plans & in judging!!
