I would be interested to know if anyone out there has had any success using Homeopathy for skin problems. It was suggested to me by my regular vet and I am thinking of giving it a try on Bracken who has a re-occurring skin problem.

I've had experience with having my dogs treated by both a holistic vet and a traditional vet at the same time.  It wasn't for skin problems, tho.  My male had a really bad case of colitis and had been treated with traditional meds for a number of years.  It seemed that they were losing their effectiveness, so we tried a holistic vet.  The two vets were willing to work together.  We really had great results.

Hi Valerie

I missed your topic. I agree with Catherine that you need to find a competent homeopath who has the ability to determine the cause of the "skin" problem. The skin is the major organ of the body and when the internal organs are not working properly, eventually the problem shows in the skin. My English Setter, Hobson has been through hell since 2009. There is not enough space for me to talk about what he has been through. I could write a book. In summary, a vet caused Hobson to suffer GDV because he ignored the side effects of the drug, Prednisone and blamed his natural diet. After GDV Hobson could not digest bones or raw meat. This is a sign that the digestive system is compromised. I used to lightly cook Hobson's meat and I believed this was preferable to dried food.

I believe the quality of the food is extremely important. For instance, even though chicken in Australia is not supposed to contain hormones, the poor hens are injected with antibiotics and are caged in appalling conditions. I only feed my dogs certified organic raw food. Costs me a small fortune but it is worth it. Hobson can now eat raw organic meat and bone. Unfortunately Hobson suffered a major setback towards the end of last year because I trusted a high profile natural vet who recommended a particular probiotic. Hobson shed every skin cell on his entire body, lost his coat and a huge amount of weight. It is a miracle Hobson survived. I did not realise that a probiotic could cause so much harm.

I hope Bracken is doing well now. I have been feeding my dogs (and my horses) a natural diet for a long time. I do believe that a natural and certified organic raw meat/bone diet is the best. Susan
