Exclusively Setters

Home for Irish Setter Lovers Around the World

Hi everyone,
Guess this is mainly for the Aussies just been sorting out my insurance renewal and did a couple of quotes. I am with Medicare.
Now my boy an Irish Setter $682, a Red and White Setter $461, as is a Golden Retriever, GSP and a German Shepherd.
how can an Irish be $200 + extra? Just about every dog I have checked is at the lower price apart from an Irish Wolfhound.
Bow Wow is a hundred dollars cheaper still $100 over a lot of other breeds.
The question is why that is a hell of a jump for an Irish.
Cheers Rosie

See what they cover Rosie. Best to compare on exclusions. You could have a cheaper to insure dog but that means you would have to live with a Golden Retriever, GPS or German Shepherd!!

This is all on my insurance same as I am on, in fact Bow Wow was top cover all the Medicare quotes was on Siverpaw cover just popped other breeds in out of interest same birthday year etc. two hundred plus extra why couldn't get any answers from the company.

Don't have a look at RSPCA insurance, you will need medical attention straight after.

Thanks will stay clear.

Like it Rhonda :))

I cancelled my insurance after I lost Jasmine, they quibbled so much over little things that I decided to open an ISA instead, and put into it the amount I would have spent on insurance £100 per month....lets face it when you go to the vet you will probably only use the insurance once in a blue moon, because your excess is usually above your normal bill, for me (being a Scot and being careful) I feel that you are paying twice, and the only one that wins is the insurance company...so the ISA wins hands down...I can get at a large amount in a hurry, in an emergency, and am saving money, a win win situation...well that's what I think anyway...lol

It depends ,to a degree, how well off you are(I am not!) If you can afford to pay the bills then forget the insurance. It is really a gamble but the risk of not having insurance and having a dog that becomes ill and needs prolonged treatment or an operation is too great.Ellie's medication, which is ongoing for the rest of her life, costs around £160 a month. Her insurance is £36 a month and even with the excess I get back £128 so for £68 I receive £128. The other two have had very few claims but when Arthur was a puppy his vet bills after x-rays etc were getting on for £900.I couldn't have afforded that without his insurance.I would hope to never have to claim but know that ,if I did,I would have the insurance company to help me.

I would never have a dog without insurance, like Howard I have Abbie on £180 month meds. has been since she was 2 1/2. She also has to have tests every 4 months at £125 a time, this is just for her epilepsy, she has had a tumour removed of her spine, and she also has cushions, and liver damage. I have a for life policy and pay £63 month for both dogs my excess for Abbie is £115 and £90 for Sofie per year. My insurance company process the claims very quickly and I have my cheque within 10 days of them receiving my claim.

I have Memphis insured not rich by any means I myself am not insured. The question is why is an Irish
$220+ more to insure than the other breeds. Just had a long chat with Medibank and got nowhere so will go with them I guess this year look around for next year as I want him fully insured.

The problem is, that these days most of the insurance companies have a ceiling of say £7000, and when that runs out they stop paying...only a few companies insure for life...and these are horrendously expensive to keep up...Yes they pay, but they will wheedle their way out of paying if they can...and if you can save, some way or another, you can put the premium amount of money into a savings account and hopefully you will have the money to pay for medication etc....I am not wealthy myself, a pensioner, so every penny must be accounted for..but for me this is the way I do it now, (after many years of insurance) I was so disgusted about the way they treated me over my lovely Jasmine that I think this is the way to go now...plus some vets, once they hear that you are insured, will do many many tests to find an answer that could probably be diagnosed easily, (I have to say that my vets I have now aren't like that, but I have been with some that will do this over the years)

Hi Rosie, im new to ES and have just read about your large insurance quote. Im with petplan and pay $492 aprox yearly for my irish. I have claimed and they have been most helpful, hope this helps although its a late reply. Talk soon Dianne

I am with Pet Plan, they are just fantastic but they donn`t cover Austrlia only Europe. I rang them when this post went out to ask. It is a shame and I told them so. It looks like you live in Austria so I donn`t understand why I was told that ???  <:0)
