My setter does not do it as far as she is concerned blankets are for shredding into as many small pieces as she can. I think she is having a competition with my racing greyhound bitch to see who can turn a blanket into the most pieces. But William m…
I'm so relieved to find out that Bailey's not alone with his blanket fetish. Our Cocker Spaniel looks at him like he's a nut job but he often drifts off to sleep sucking his blanket. Only does it late evening. Must see if I can get a picture of him…
lovely pics agnieszka ill have to get some of layla doing it .i thought she was the only one that did it .ive had 2 setters before and they did not do it but then i thought it was due to her been blind she did it
Well I shall see if my new puppy does this then because Dub came to us just barely 8 weeks. The new pup will be between 9-10 weeks old when I get him. I didn't find my dog seemed stressed when he did this. He seemed more like it was his normal befor…
It does no harm at all. Barkley loves to suck on his blanket, and my friend's Havanese sucks on hers too. One of the reasons maybe is that Barkley was still suckling from his mum at 8 weeks when I picked him up (which was excellent) so it could well…
I was also wondering years ago why Conner does it... he was taken from mother when he was 8 weeks and as I know he had enough natural nursing when he was a baby, that litter had their mother as normal and also flat coated nurse who had false pregnan…
Interesting to see quite a few dogs enjoy sucking their blanket. I was curious about the origin of this behaviour and looked it up in Steven R. Lindsay's 'Handbook of Applied Dog Behaviour and Training' Vol. 2. What I found is this:

Nemo Has got his own pillow and the same habits as Bailey:
It's his way to calm down and relax. He almost falls into a trance of some kind. We say Nemo's got his pillow time :)
Can't see any harm in it - unless the teared down pillow doesn't count…
I have a friend whos dog sucked and kneaded her blanket until the day she passed. She was the only dog I have ever seen who did this. Interesting that there are others who do it. I do not see any problem letting Bailey do it.
Hello Alison,
thanks for your message, so pleased you have actually got the book! I bet you spent all night reading it...? It found the book a great help for my training classes and general recommendations for puppy buyers. I find the book explains clearly how behaviour problems crop up and what we can do against them - without resorting to unnecessary harshness.
Dog training can be hard work - but also great fun!
all the best
Susan
HI,
Lucy is my pups Mum, Jessie and Poppy the dogs in the photos.
Lucy and Shana (sisters) were homed together the same week you had Bailey.
I spend quite a lot of time over the kennels helping to groom my dogs with Dee as we show ours.
I thought Bailey was gorgeous and had lots of cuddles with him.
Hi Alison,
Welcome to the forum! Hope you'll have lots of fun here. I've just read your discussion and wish you lots of luck with your young boy... He looks quite cheeky in your photo ;-) Whereabouts in Scotland are you?
Many greetings from Edinburgh and looking forward to seeing lots more of photos of your boy :-)
Nicole
Oh yes - I see what you mean - total rogue and totally loveable!! But he's simply gorgeous too.
I have taken both my boys training to get them through the Kennel Club Good Citizens scheme - Harry has his Gold - and that WAS hard work - simply stuck at it and we got there in the end!! With Alfie - I thought it would be easier - but how wrong I am - he's much more stubborn and very strong willed - but we have loads of fun.
Hi Alison
Your comment on my page has made me laugh ;-)) Oh boy how do I answer you on how to tame the 'beast within' - they are all like that!! Just set the boundries and be consistent in your approach to everything he does and thinks - his eyes will tell you so much - just wait and see. It seems the beast can be tamed look at his eyes in your profile picture. I am sure you will have loads of fun with him and more importantly him with you.
Hi Alison
Welcome to this site! Your young boy might more of a handful but I am sure he will settle in quicker than you hope....and then you will love him more and more ....forever
