Colete, I don't know how it is in the UK as I am in Canada. I just bought a puppy with very different lines from which I am familiar. I made contact with the breeders of the sire and the dam of the puppy and found them to be quite open and upfront a…

Henk, there is nothing "new" about it. The movement originated with Dr. Armstrong well over 10 years ago, mainly in response to Standard Poodle breeders whose genepool was dominatated by a highly inbred line. I was on Dr. Armstrong's list from the b…

Henk, one can improve the "chances" of producing healthy dogs with a thorough knowledge of the heath history and a concerted effort to breed away from known problems (if any) and thing that crop up (if any). I would rather put my faith in the puppy…

IRS going extinct? They were going blind, not extinct. They would have gone extinct had breeders discarded all blind and carrier animals and not engaged in any sort of test-mating approach to avoid the problem. But no, the breeders dug in and went t…

"some help from visual media (BBC-Jemima?) could be of help" Why? Jemima Harrison is not formerly trained in genetics, she is not working in an area of genetics, she is not a dog breeder, and she is not a veterinarian. She has basically just taken…

No Henk, the PRA in Irish Setters was not about inbreeding. Inbreeding does not create defective genes but will bring them to the surface more quickly than outcrossing. The problem with PRA came about because dogs carrying the recessive unknowingly…

Have just read your latest contribution to the eye problem forum, thank you !!! i have been reading the discussion and my feelings are that careful linebreeding from health checked lines which in some cases have been screened for several generations is much safer health wise than outcrossing to other lines for a low COI. Total outcrossing can also create a clash of genes as I found out with my mare , going away from the lines I know to another breed COI 0% result a severley deformed hydrops foal, a very sick mare that we nearly lost , a vet bill of £2500 and total losses of £3500. My vet is one of the top equine reproductive vets reason for this tragedy, A total clash of genes. If I had used a different stallion from lines I knew worked with my mares pedigree this could have been avoided.

Dear Wendy,
I love your pictures. It was fun to watch Rambo progress from a puppy to a star. You have some real beauties.
